Well, today I had a pack of cigarettes taken from me by the Gards due to me being 16 and therefore according to them illegal under the 'consumption of tobacco act', something I've never heard of and a google search didn't lead to anything.

I've always understood the law was that it's 18 to buy smokes, but 16 to smoke. I've never had smokes taken from me before when I've been checked by the Gards and what makes it rather odd and unbelieving is, at any U18 disco there is a smoking area and no hassle about smoking.

My assumption is then, it was nothing more than a power abusing Gard having a bad night.

Can a Gard or someone knowledgeable about the law please answer this for me? Whether what he did is corrupt or not.

My understanding is that they changed that "16 to smoke them" law a while back so that it's now 18.

Try www.otc.ie and see if there's any info for you.

Point out where I said that in definite assumption please? As far as I'm aware it's still 16 to smoke them and 18 to buy them. If that's true, what he did is technically corrupt. If it's not true, then I take back that statement.

Considering you're a Gard it could be rather helpful to actually add to the topic and answer my question?

18 to smoke. Whats the point in having it 16 to smoke but 18 to buy them. It dont make sense.
