cool man, thought you guys split up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,759 ✭✭✭Neurojazz

Never split up, just went quiet while lots of crap went on in background :)

i mean, i spent about 6 years of my life dealing with a rogue managers' lawyer :) - again, really sorry for all the pap remixes that plagued the trance scene that we had no power over!

Stuart (the other half of Binary) is down in Oz and running the BFR label and we do everything over the net.

YOU are part of Binary Finary!? Fk me!

Congrats on being one of the very few reasons I got into dance (together with Cafe Del Mar by Energy 52).

I owe you many enjoyable nights dancin' since, and indeed I remember specifically only the other day telling someone that trance attained perfection in 1998 with this tune.

    Muchos Kudos. I'm honoured :)

Cafe del mar Energy 52 is a fine remix - i've always tried to get my trance skills to that level. The original 1998 had 'a moment' in it, whereas energy 52 made a track sound well produced - i've been trying to balance both areas.

Yeah, not into trance right now, but i can apprecite the classics - also the reasons i got into dance mysic way back when. U must have made a small fortune from "Euphoria" comps!

the moment for me was when the opening melody made that progression up in the begining.that sealed it for me.wasnt a massive fan of the breakdown but that opening gets me everytime:D

Wow, I really love that song.

Can I ask a question (and maybe this is a personal question!) - did you think of that tune in your head and then try to play it on the keyboard, or did you 'discover' it while messing around on the keyboard?

Half and half - i had a set method of practice i used to make chord progressions and set my self tasks - 1998 was a mixture of a typical chord progression i'd use and then messed with the intervals on some notes in the chord changes - once that shocking chord change was discovered i had to make it happen at the right time - so i did some maths (mixes well with music!) - and made the change happen in an odd place that flowed - it basically caught people out when it happened in a good way :)

I had no intention of making a hit, just wanted to make my self less manically depressed :) - i think it worked :)

Would you ever consider temporary changing your name to something like Binary Finarydz and bring out an unbelievably cheesey chipmunk vocal electro pop tune, and for the music video have lots of plastic titted, rock hard arsed pornstars, work out and dance in sweaty thongs and bras, you would make a mint, and then you'd have the cash to produce some proper animal tunes, lol

I'm sat here with more gear than i need, all legal software, and do the music thing during most waking hours :) - Hopefully i don't need to sell out ;)

I've written many styles, but usually just aim to make something sound complete - some do sound commercial but never get used for anything.

If/when i go out live just as myself i'm going to try and mix up a wide range of material that is made from a wide range of genres but flowing - still a few decent tracks short, but getting there :)

    This is cheesyish :)

Yep, details here - but rates will be rising as i'm snowed under with work right now, i can recommend other people also if i'm too far away etc...

What kinda tunes you gonna be bringing out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,759 ✭✭✭Neurojazz

I'll make anything really - personally i just write whatever happens to come out - and i'll be releasing my own material myself now. The Binary music is a separate thing that depends on Armada or any other label to invest in - If people want a Binary album then that's an awful lot of work and peoples time has to be paid for to develop that - which probably won't happen as most labels would only want 1998+remixes.

It's early days though, who knows - Armada might commission an album in the next year or two.

Personally i'm starting to pump everything i do out on my spiralking label for the fun of it. I have a backlog of tracks i'm bringing up to date and then start on new material in the near future :)

What's your view on illegal downloading etc and your music uploaded on the likes of YouTube and that ?

Well it happens, not much anyone can do to stop it... i was very lucky to be one of the last people to sell physical vinyl - really very lucky.

There are many pros and cons to the situation, i suppose it's down to those that choose to buy into the artist and goto gigs etc... - some people are mp3 only and a bit stuffed in that respect. I just try to make my music as best as i can so that the mp3 down loader might think 'ooo i'd like the full version of that' - that's about all i can do.

I must admit i'd knew i'd made it once i was all over pirate bay ;)

Was thinking that myself, it's catch 22 really. The likes of YouTube generates awareness in regards to future live live gigs etc but hamper sales of the music at the same time by just converting to Mp3 and so on ..
:D:D success measured by torrents on pirate bay , good shot :)
Best of luck anyway in your future plans :)

The original mix of 1998 is what got me listening to dance music in the first place.

Haha, 1998 was such a small pressing as well - 1500 pink covers, about 150 whites - i should auction the ones i have one day ;)

Strange fact: 1998 was called 1997 originally:) - was changed by the label because of the length of time it took to release - if i'd called it 'the plonk' would i have had all those remixes going on though? :)

None of the remixes released topped the original "1998".

If I remember, djs like Tiesto, Seb Fontaine and Judge Jules had to play it at the wrong speed, i.e pitch it down in order to beat match....You can see that example on Tiesto's Magik 2 mix.

At one stage, Binary Finary were rubbing shoulders with Goa and psy trance artists:
    http://www.discogs.com/release/361855

Also their original label (Aquarius) released Goa trance records early on:
    http://www.discogs.com/label/Aquarius+(2)
with the likes of Satori, Beach Buddha and Syb Unity Nettwerk.

Another half of BF, Nuw Idol, helped out with "1998". Nuw Idol went on to make some of the best trance in the late 90s/ early 2000s. Loved "Polly's Pharmacy","My Liberation" and "The Embrace"

Nuw Idol set up his own label, Well Wicked:
    http://www.discogs.com/label/WellWicked
Plenty of crackers on that label.

Finally, also remember BF's 1999 live set in Dublin, which was aired on John Power's 2FM show.

    Just my two cents.

Was that at the Pod :) - i remember it well :) - it was my first trip to Ireland :)

Nuw Idol did the Mixdown of the track at the Watershed (the Shamens Studio i think) - he's a fine engineer, i loved 'the ceremony'

Funny to think for me that when this track came out, I had already pretty much hung up my Pumas! Raving had got the better of me by about '96 or so...

    Best of luck Neurojazz!

(at the Pod) Delerium "Silence" (Fade mix) was opener, Arrakis "The Spice" (Binary Finary mix) was second track - I listened to it on John Power's show. JP announced that Binary Finary would become resident on his show.

Ah right, might have to check if that was the first gig - my memory is a bit sketchy to the set list - you have to remember that there were a lot of fakers out there taking credit and even pretending to be me :)

I'm itching to get out there again, my music is so out of date it's probably back in fashion ;)

Matt's in Australia touring with Binary Finary I think at the moment. As far as I know, he's mainly using ableton these days. He has an access virus too (i think). Check out the dance music production forum (where he's a mod).
