Kare Tour De Foothills - Sunday 19th April

I was just wondering if anybody else is thinking of doing this? It looks mostly flat but I'm going to use it as part of training for the WW200. Similar to the Martin Earley tour last year, I'm thinking of cycling down and back which should round me up to about 150km for the day.

Also, it goes through a town called Doodys Bottoms :D

    Here's the main site:

    Here's the the route:

I'm interested... not sure if I'm in yet though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

Same as Tiny - interested but not sure of my plans for the weekend yet, might be on for it. Would be interested to get a chance to ride with a large group as haven't done so since last summer and would be nice to get an event or two like this in before the Wicklow 200. Also interested to see what type of time I could pound out with the benefit of being in a group.

Not sure if I'm free on Sunday. Also the Stamullen GP is on too.

That's kind of the same as myself. I don't think I'll be doing any pounding though! I've been just trying to drag myself training for the last month or two to get back in shape and despite a good few 100kms, I haven't pushed past 125km yet. This looked to be the perfect length to raise the bar a bit.

That goes up snowtown 3-4 times (horrible climb). Usually breaks up fairly quickly as a result.

I think I last rode that Stamullen GP in 2005 a separate B race.... 6 laps, up snowtown, 8 of us got away from the line, I remember going up the hill the 1st time and thinking what the f** k am i doing here !!

Needless to say I was back in the bunch after 4 of those laps ...
I think that Daniel Lynch of Kantuck won it that day ... Any one know if he still riding the bike ... he was strong that day !!

Mr Scanlon won the A race, on his own by a minute if I remember correctly !

@Bike_Joe: You riding it this year?

Jaysus, every open race I consider turns out to be a killer. And here was me worrying I'd be a bit beat after cycling up there.

Raam, it sounds like your made for this one. There's a separate S3 race as well.

I've heard that it's very difficult. RogerB had hinted that he would be doing it.

    Raam, I am in a jocker !!! after putting in a huge winter ( 2500+ miles )
including a 26hr Week in the land of Climbing ( Gran Canaria ) I now
find myself barely getting around, I may have overtrained, so need to rest and try and get back into racing, have n't raced in a couple of weeks ...

So I hope to ride soon, and will prob get to a few league races to get some speed back into legs ....

you not riding any open races ???

Nah, haven't got enough race experience to try and tackle them yet.

Going up Snowtown once is enough never mind several times in a race scenario.
I think me and Rob Fowl are going down to Naas.I think I have a pass from the missus.

How steep are we talking here. Would I need more than a 23 sprocket?

Snowtown, is that the one out of the Naul?

If so, it's quite short. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Snowtown,+meath&sll=53.375136,-6.246414&sspn=0.18966,0.571976&ie=UTF8&ll=53.596886,-6.273193&spn=0.044723,0.142994&z=13

yeah thats the one.23 will be fine.which way is it running?

Well it is the one out of the Naul, but the race goes the other way, race leaves Stalmulllen village, heading toward naul, there is a fork in the road keep left ....
at the next crossroads go left, up short drag .... and then road takes a 90 degree right up the climb ( called ) Snowtown, pretty much out of the saddle stuff, and it wil be a game of a 23 will do, but how fast can you spin it !! I reckon it's less than a 1km, but feels a lot longer

The races heads down long descent into the Naul village and takes the first left onto the road for Balbriggan.....

My second race was an open race, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I will probably do this Tour De Foothills as I doubt my leg will be up to a race this weekend.

Be very careful when dropping down into the Naul. There is a quarry entrance near the bottom and the road tends to have craters there.I would deffo take a spin up it and have a look cause its a long fast descent and you wont even see them as there is a little dip in the road

Get your ass out there and start racing Raam. Why wait until next year? You will love it and even though we havent met(yet!) it seems this race would suit you, especially if there is a separate S3 race. I've raced that circuit and the hill isn't too long, just get to the front and put the hammer down! Oh to be young again:pac::pac:

So the consensus then is that Raam should totally do this race. He should also totally give me a lift out there.

Hey, not sure I follow you - if you've done a few 100km spins solo, this route looks well within your ability: if I'm reading it right it's a quite flat 93km route (I'll do the extra 7km to make it 100km). If I'm not missing something, I'd you'd do this one no bother.

I'm going to do this one. Have an engagement lunch to go to on Saturday that could lead to a session but I'm off the beer trying to drop weight for boxing so hopefully I'll stick to a few glasses of wine and be up in time to make it down to Naas for this 10am start.

Hope to see a few boardsies there.

I'm just finding that 4.5 to 5 hours on the bike is crippling me - though that said my recovery time does seem to be a lot better than when starting these things last year.
Hopefully, once I get this one done, I'll feel in good enough shape to get onto the Saturday spins and get a bit of good distance done over the next few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,032 ✭✭✭FrankGrimes

Ah I get you now, though I'd say you'd manage this course with the advantage of being in a group, though understand if it's the recovery time that's a concern. I find a cold shower (plunge pool in gym is better) and a good dose of protein soon after the cycle (though the recovery drink I got on wiggle is 4:1 carbs:protein, which is supposed to be ideal for recovery) really helps. That said, sometimes I'm not knackered after the spin, other times I need to head straight for a 90 minute kip.

Good luck with the training whichever way you decide to go.

So who's heading along to this?

    FrankGrimes
    Blorg

    ?

I'll recognise blorg from a couple of spins last summer and Tiny from when I bought pedals off him. Will you guys be in boards jerseys? Will try to meet up with you if so. I'll be the guy on the black (boring I know!) PlanetX in a green PBK jersey...and with the scars on the shins being my most noticeable feature these days.

In fact, I just noticed that the wind seems to be picking up a bit again on Sunday but at least it looks like turning around to blowing the right direction. It will be warm-ish (15?)and cloudy/sunny.

bang on 30km from D15 via Lucan, Cellbridge, Straffan, Sallins ... is that the direction you're taking?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭irishmotorist

I am and was thinking of just heading down the N7 - it's straight and direct and should be OK with regards to traffic at that time on a Sunday morning. I'm in Lucan near the Pennyhill so will be going out the Outer Ring Road and joining the N7 just before Citywest.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

For the Tour of Kildare last year, myself and unionman just went straight down the N7. Despite the vicious headwind we got there in good time.

I think I'm out of this one, absolutely wrecked and going to do something nice and easy tomorrow, emty was suggesting Meath spin with a 10:30 start from the Popes Cross.

93k versus 80km both flattish much of a muchness, the vets tend to ride steady until the last 10-20 k then race to the finish !
