Maximum Heart Rate

    For a 16 year old male, which is the best forumla for determining maximum heart rate

    a) 220 - age
    -> 220 - 16 = 204 bpm

    b) 208 - (70% of age)

    -> 208 - (.7x16) = 196.8 bpm ≈ 197 bpm

    c) 205 - (50% of age)
    -> 205 - (.5x16) = 197 bpm

    So which is the best formula? Obviously B + C give reasonably the same value for MHR, but I always thought 220-age was the most common formula used. However there is quite a big difference between 204 and 197!

    By the way, this is not for medical advice - it's for inputting into my Heart Rate Monitor, as all other workout zones are calculated off the Max HR

    Thanks

    Unless you,ve health problems i'd reccomend you just train cardio to your highest heart rate you can cope with, you'll know so dont be worried about the number, use the monitor to push you and not to hold you back, thats where people go wrong with heart rate monitors..
