Achieving overall "Hardness" and fitness

m41 (with a deskjob), looking to reach absolute max fitness level maybe by the end of the summer. It's now or never I've decided.

Currently jogging 3 or 4 times a week... maybe 15 miles, but increasing. Only other exercise really is push ups with emphasis on stomach (chasing the 6 pack too).
Not crazy about situps or stomach crunches, because it doesn't take much to put my back out.

Don't want to be jogger skinny, and don't really want the big muscley look. Also not planning to join a gym.

Just want to achieve total fitness and a kind of overall "hardness"... if that makes sense. I'd be interested in any pointers to help me achieve this goal.

    Thx
    B

What body type of physique are you looking for??

For example are you kind of looking for the physique brad pitt had in snatch???

give examples and ill try and give some advice:)

    Diet, diet, diet, diet.

Getting results - lean, cut, fit, is around 85%+ diet. What do you eat during a typical day? Height, weight, bodyfat % ?

I'm sure diet is important, but 85% + ?? What about exercise/sweat... no pain no gain etc...??

My own diet would be fair I suppose.

Start most days with a bola porridge.
    I get my 5 a day fruit/veg.
Eat too many goodies (biscuits mainly, the odd cake).
Though I don't eat "sweets" or crisps.
Rarely exceed the recommend alco intake.
    Drink plenty of water.
    No fizzy drinks

I'm 5'7 68kg, so perfect on BMI, though wouldn't be averse to adding a kilo or two upper body.

It's true. Diet is where its at tbh. You can train all you want but if you're living off Lucozade and minstrels (I know you're not but its an example) it won't make a lick of difference. You need to train but you need your diet more. A lot more.

If it were all about training then all the guys I see on a regular basis in the gym would be huge no?

So if we all jsut stopped training and eating well we'd look awesome?

Pfffffttttt Hanley your like you have some sort of experience or some thing :D:p

OP firstly post you diet (a full ist of your daily intake)

2nd what do you mean when you say push up’s with emphasis on your stomach ??

3rd you wont get rock hard if you dont use some weight's , so you are either going to have to join a gym or buy some

He said you need to train...

What about the other way around, if I stopped eating and just trained would I be fit beyond words?

I think Bobby's statement was fair. For someone not looking to join a gym, sitting at a desk all day, chasing a 6-pack (or at least... hardness), diet is probably going to be the decider.

However someone that wants "absolute max fitness" (wtf?) but only wants to run? Doesn't matter what you eat, diet ain't gonna get you there.

OP said he didnt want jogging physique but does a lot of jogging. Id recommend doing suicidies on a football pitch for that part so. If you dont want to join a gym, maybe invest in a set of dumbells and a swiss ball, they are probably the cheapest. If you want to build up or get a physique I recommend joining a team sport that demands your attendance and so doesnt allow to slack. Maybe a rugby or boxing club.

The other lads are talking about what not to eat but also focus on what you need to eat. More smaller meals is the way to go and up proteins, carbs and liquids.

It's what I find works although no means for everyone so take out of it what you will :D

Hmm. Actually sorry - I just went ahead there and presumed you were after fat loss - which is not it at all looking back at your op!

Sounds more like you want to just get really fit and build up a bit - recipe for that is lots of good clean food (check the stickies) and good hard training.

Have you done any weights before? What do you actually like doing?

Hmm, tbh (my) diet is a bit fcuked up. I was trying to get the "hardness" look for ages, had a good diet, worked out regulary, however my abs were hiding behind tummy flab. I went to england for the weekend to a comp, ate nothing but chips and cookies and yet when i got back my abs had decided to show themselves... wtf happened there?

+1 on joining the boxing club. Most small towns have one,the membership is going to be alot cheaper than a gym and all the tools to change your physique are available to you.+if you get immersed in it your not likely to flake out of going.

I would advise weights too, I also love bodyweight exercise and many people could achieve the physique they want from just basic bodyweight exercises, since many people just want a little muscle packed on.

There is a lot more than just basic pushups, situps or chinups you can do. Doing advanced gymnastic moves provide a lot of resistance and you can get big, though it does involve more co-ordinate/balance strength, so doing weights is usually a faster route. There are lots of big guys on youtube claiming to only do bodyweight exercise.

I'm about 5 months into the training now (which primarily consists of jogging about 20 times a month). Upper body in pretty good shape too now.

During the last week however, each jog has been a slog... felt like I've been made of lead... no obvious symtoms of any underlying illness or anything... but it is a bit worrying.

overall the whole jogging thing is much over rated. Your always going to look 'flat' if your doing more cardio than weights so just get the weights going (body weight is fine) and you will get to where you want to be.

To be honest i have very very rarely seen a regular jogger that i admired his physique and said 'wow now he is in great shape!' - most look flat and if they were to walk down the street in regular clothes you would not even think they did any kind of training (well apart from the sometimes healthy glow some have).

overall, your boat is going in the wrong direction for your goal!

I can see how doing only bodyweight exercises builds great upper body strength, but what about your legs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

If you're that wrecked, I'd suggest switching around your exercises a bit and also making sure you're getting enough protein in. Upping my protein intake and not being fecked half the time were suspiciously coincidental.

Maybe just rest a bit too. Resting is great. :)

Iv found that diet does nothing( for real physique and fitness)without proper training and obviously vice versa- ya gotta encourage the body to grow and shape itself then feed it right for me! ;)
