Roddy Doyle's The Snapper is a great film, the second in the trilogy. The first being The Commitments and the latter The Van. Hope they show The Van soon. These films bring back such happy memories, the real Ireland of the early 90's. Those were the days, can't wait to see it again. For anyone who hasn't seen it I can't recommend it highly enough. Great laugh!! :D

Eye, the country had enough money to stop being part of the 3rd world
and had'nt yet turned into the horrible Guilford/Milton Keynes clone it became a few of years ago
(new kitchen every two years just so the neighbours who's name i dont know can see the workmen therfore know i have money to spend:o:rolleyes:)

Hard to imagine now, but Ireland used to be a fun place to live:o:mad:

Good show; well worth a watch!

I spent ages downloading it, watched it the day before I seen it was gonna be on my Big TV! :(

No matter because it's nothing short of a masterpiece, Meany is simply fantastic. For me he steals the show and thats a tall order!

These films bring back such happy memories, the real Ireland of the early 90's. Those were the days,
The good old days. Calling into me neighbours for a bit of milk or sugar until i get a lift to the shop. Everybody was proper friends back then. Everyone helped each other out.

Excellent film. Easily better than the other two films. Colm meaney is pure comic gold in this.

    Georgie bleeding boooorgess.

Oh man, you're in for a treat. I liked The Van but it was a bit depressing (As it was supposed to be) and The Commitments was great but especially when Colm Meaney was on. The Snapper is me fave of the three by a long shot. Now you'll know what everyone is on about with the auld Georgie Buuuuuuuuurges.

Anyone remember when this was on BBC originally and half the city were phoning in to Gerry Ryan saying how deadly it was and all the southsiders were saying how it was a disgrace showing Ireland in such a negative, grotty light. Hahahaha

A quote from an American on IMDB:

It helps knowing some Irish people. I have friends in Letterkenny, Ireland and since I've known them I now get the full meaning of Dessie's line "I guess a ride's out of the question, eh??" I thought Dessie wanted a ride to the pub!! Could not figure out why he needed to brush his teeth for THAT.

    :D

    :D

Doubt that since Tallaght, Clondalkin, Neilstown, Inchicore etc are all on the southside.

And take off your rose tinted glasses everyone, people borrowed milk etc cause they couldn't afford to buy their own until dole day :D

I remember being in the states a few years ago visiting cousins. And we went to the video store to rent a movie for the night, and they had the van, so we got that. I was a bit homesick at the time. So myself and my sister, and my straight laced cousin and her straight laced boyfriend sat down to watch it. I think they were a bit shocked regarding the language but they still really enjoyed it.

On a side note, do you think this is the execs in TV3 showing they have a sense of humour by showing a movie based in recessionary dublin in the 80's, 3 days after the worst budget we have ever had?

Brilliant film, the best of the three...Colm Meaney is such a good (and very underrated) actor, the comedy and dialogue is first class, i didn't like The Van as much though....

Some of my favorite movie quotes come from 'The Snapper' - in college if any of the girls got with an older guy we all shouted over "A1 Sharon A1" and it never got old!!!:o

Does anyone remember a quote from it, when they are going to the hospital? Something about sandwiches?

My mother told me this quote years ago, and I have not been able to find it online. I think they are going to the hospital with 'Shadden'(lol) and the mother says "Do you want me to make you sandwiches?", and dessie goes "We're going to the hospital not the bleedin' phoenix park!!!".

Does that ring a bell for anyone? Have not seen the snapper, though I loved the other two. I dont honestly think this has been on the telly in about fifteen years, and you cant get it on DVD(Why god why? You can get all 55 sequels to highschool musical, but no roddy doyle movies??)

First shown on television around March 1993. BBC2.
It was on RTE in 1996.

The Commitments and The Van are both available on region 2 DVD
A region 1 DVD of The Snapper has been out for some time. Multi region players are dirt cheap.

The Family was never shown again is because it was awful! You can't compare it with the other two.

I think 'The Family' is from Doyle's book 'The woman who walked into doors'. I remember it well 'charlo!'.
I too loved 'The Snapper', had a video recording of it so watched it loads of times over the years. The scene with Sharon and Georgie was a horrible scene...yuck!!!!!!!!! Remember when he handed her her knickers and said he'd been intending to show them to the lads:D. What an idiot! Might watch again tonight:).
