Don't think it's showing "support" of anything really. I used to see a lot of DL plates in yellow - probably just to blend in if they spend a lot of time over the border. Probably not as common nowadays.

I see a lot around the border counties alright, particularlty Donegal. Don't inderstand either. The also look brutal against most car colours. Nothing like a crisp blue, white and black reg plate!

Saw a Kilkenny-reg A4 a while back on yellow plates. It was 01-KK-xxx, but the characters were spaced to split it up looking like a UK reg - eg OIK K123. Bizarre.

(Also, this A4 was yet another 1.9 TDI S4 :pac:)

UK reg's look much better on cars. Irish reg's look terrible, too many numbers, dashes, IRL sign etc etc I hate the though of having to put Irish plates on my car, hence I haven't yet despite it being registered.

On the topic of the yellow number plate, I have actually got used to having a yellow rear plate on my car from having UK plates and I have debated putting a yellow irish rear plate on it. I probably wont though I will just go for a white plate but without any of the IRL, county name and the dashes nonsense.

It's all about look and taste...I have a yellow reg on the back of my Irish jeep, looks a lot better than the irish muck plates which can ruin the look of a vehicle imo. Oh and I do a lot of my driving in Donegal :P

Anyone with yellow plates on an Irish car should have their car and driving license seized until such time they recognise the country their car is registered in.

I'm really surprised you hate the look of the Irish plates so much. You're driving a BMW and I've always thought that the blue, white and black of the Irish plate catches the roundel really well. The yellow rear plate doesn't really go with anything except maybe a red or black car. When I switched to the Irish plates on my (white) car it looked so much better.

I know lots of people that have been 'asked' to remove non standard Irish reg plates, never heard of anything being said about yellow plates though...I also have a slightly smaller plate on the front :D

Theres a chap going around Dublin in a left hand drive gold BMW X5 with similar plates for the past 2 years, handy for the M50 toll cameras.

Yes it is. Any car registered after 1987 (That's the year, isn't it?) must have black text on a white background.

People used to do it to blend in when driving/parking in NI during the troubles/70s.

I think it's just tossers and boy racers that do it now to look cool/different. Most often on import VAG cars.

I just find the Irish plate very cluttered. You have the IRL then two numbers, then a dash then the county then another dash, numbers and the county name on top. Its just too many numbers. I prefer the way UK plates are almost all letters and dont have dashes etc. The yellow is a different thing, I'm almost 2 years having a yellow rear plate I have gotten used to it, separate issue from the number plate design really(I hate changing things I'm used to :o, except getting a new car of course)

Or hardly because it suits the look of a vehicle more than the standard issue plates in this country?

Legalities and aesthetics aside, I think the black on yellow is easier to read. Does anyone know why the plates are white on the front of the UK cars and yellow on the rear?

Aesthetics: Depends on your view point and the colour of the car. Sometimes I prefer the yellow ones but see my last point. Oh ya it has nothing to do with support for the British.

Legalities: I think the Irish system is practical in one way i.e. having a set standard, but that shouldn't mean that that everything else should be ruled out. Our standard is a bit rigid. The whole point of number plates is identification, so size and font type are paramount here. I personally really like German style font plates, I find them easier to read and they look so much better than standard Irish plates.

Would I put yellow ones on my car....No, because every time I see them, they seem to be on the rs4 TDI's with the dual tip exhausts, which now appear to be driven by......(I'll leave your imaginations to fill in the rest).

Yellow plates are muck, couldn't wait to get them off my import. Irish/Euro plates look better on cars regardless of colour imo. The yellow plates look especially bad on blue I think.

I don't mind the county on the top of the plate. For the lack of it to be an NCT failure is just daft though.

Again as I said before it's down to taste and I can't for the life of me see how a standard reg irish plate looks better than the UK equivalent. They suit all colors of car especially black/white.

My car looked so much nicer with UK plates. Yellow plates on a black car looks sweet. Also the plates were cherished plates too so they looked pretty cool.

The format regulations only apply to post 1991 cars. In typical Irish fashion, we introduced an new registration system in 1987 but it was only 4 years later that the european union made us bring in regulations on the format.

    1. I prefer yellow plates for aesthetic reasons (colour, less clutter...)
    2. I prefer yellow plates because I want my car to look more like a UK car (less hassle driving up north, less likely to be stopped by gardaí...)
    3. I prefer Irish plates because they look better than UK ones would on my car.

    1. Yellow plates are illegal,
    2. Itallic writing is also illegal

Basically retarded Boy Racers shoot themselves in the foot by having differing plates. Because they give the cops an easy excuse to stop them, bag them, search for drugs etc.

I have read the legislation and anything that doesnt conform with the description in the legisaltion is illegal.

I will post the link when I have it.

So if you want to carry drugs irish plates are a must?!

Some pretty big generalizations going on in this thread as usual on here of late

Nobody has said that they are not illegal, if you are driving a vehicle with them then you should know they are illegal.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yeah thats exactly what I am saying:rolleyes:

I have seen many Boy Racer types done in Court for drug & drink driving when the Guard has stated that the only reason the car was stopped was because of the yellow/italic plates.

If they had normal plates would never have brought any attention on themselves.

"Childish" is a new one on me to describe reg plates!!

Why do you have the ****ty plastic ones if you feel strongly about them? The embossed metal ones look much nicer on nice cars.

As for the yellow Dutch plates, I just think they look cheap. The mixture of yellow and blue look awful, like the inside of a Ryanair 737. The black on white is much nicer to look at.

I just think that they are badly designed. In 2000 there were more than 100,000 cars registered in Dublin. Trying to recall a six eight number is difficult. I think the current English system is good as it is 2,2,3. Look at the Dutch plates above. 3 sets of 2 Easy to remember when broken down. That's why phone numbers are usually written 3,4 and rarely given out as a string of 6 or 7.

The Irish language county name was only there to placate the Irish language lobby as the county names were done in English when the system was introduced.

On top of all this, I think the lack of vanity plates in Ireland is a shame. Fair enough in the UK there is a number which corresponds to year but you can put on older plates if you like. Quite frankly it is nobody's business what year a car is except for the owner, the NCT and the insurer.

To be honest, this is a silly thread to be talking about plates. There are gob****es in the 6 counties who wouldnt even take their cars out on the road without having the smaller bolder font in the plates! Then there are the pillocks who pay big money for personalised plates!! I'll never figure that one out! Why would you want to draw attention to yourself? The standard is set by the government and everybody has to adhere to it. There should be no exceptions.

I have seen personalised plates in many countries. It seems to be the norm in the US. Have seen a lot of company cars in Germany have personalised plates. A Bitburger car with BIT:TE and a car belonging to KONE lifts with KO:NE. I think it is good if you have a really nice car to put a plate on it to disguise its true age. I don't like pink Micras with some attempt to put "HOT GAL" on the number plate though.

I think there is good income derived by the governments by selling off cherished numbers.

The Irish system is not very effective. They should scrap it and bring in a new one where they can raise a few quid by selling off the better combinations.
