every club in this country has a different way of organising their shows and entry fees, and its always going to be that way.

    Lookin forward to it.
Prob, heading up with the 'Carlow Classic Motor Club', in my P6.

Let's hope the weather is good. Was freezing last year!

    Bump!

It looks like the weather will be nice and fine this year, so I might go up. Whats the story
regarding start time and facilities? No point in turning up too early to an empty field. :)

I may take a spin down myself for a nose. Any more details on times etc

Never brought a car to one of these shows but was thinking of doing so. Car is not strictly classic based on VRT definition of classic, so is there any limit on how old car must be?
Also, if I do go, will I be able to get away early or will I need apply for day long pass from wife and kids?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭trevorbrady

I was able to sneak out early last year, I hate getting stuck in the melee trying to get out of a swampy field at the end of a show so I usually piss off early. As for car age, I think they'll let most "remarkable" or "unusual" cars in regardless of age but if it's pre '70 it gets in free...

    ill be their :D

we should have a nice collection of mantas their

That means we should arrive by 11ish.

Where exactly in Durrow is the location for this? Is there ample parking for those of us not bringing exhibits along? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭trevorbrady

one horse town. You'll find it...

and yes, there's no shortage of fields ;)

Durrow show used to take place in the Castle grounds which was a gorgeous location for a show. It became so popular that they had to find an alternative green field site about 1 mile on the Cork side.

One thing to remember about Durrow. You park where you are told and unless you have a specific area agreed with the organisers, you could end up anywhere on the field. I'm going as part of the Irish Mini Owners Club and we've arranged to meet up at Durrow village before heading down to the field in one convoy to ensure we're all parked together.

Already posted this in the "today i saw a classic..." thread, but I'll stick the link in here anyways as its relevant. Lots of photos from Durrow today.

Dropped in for around an hour in passing as one of the lads had to be back in tralee for five, rana round as many cars as i could. As it turned out we were stuck in the carpark for nearly two hours trying to get out,got into the car at 2pm,didnt get onto the road till 4...It was a little bit crazy there.

Some great tin on display though..:)

All the car park was exiting at the same point at the far end of the carpark, around 5 rows of cars leaving at the one place,we could see it lock up as we moved out from where we were parked. Our row wasnt moving at all because the marshalls were leaving all the other ones go first.
Ah well..sun was shining anyway, wish id had had more time there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭BigCon

First year there, enjoyed the classics immensely, however I'd never go back there again, over 2 hours trying to get out of the car park, kids loosing it in the back.
As far as I could see the marshalls were clueless, just kept letting out the cars at the front, didn;t care about the cars at the back.

    traffic management was a nightmare.

There were some blokes getting out of their cars and going mental at the stewards. I thought it was going to come to blows, they were that wound up. And that was only 2.30-3.30 (only a one-hour wait to get out for me  ) I'd hate to have been there around 5-6 ish...

I got into the Mini at 6 and it took me 30 minutes to get out. I was lucky. One of our crew went to his car at the same time which was parked further back and he rang me at 8.30pm to say that he had just got out of the carpark!!!!!!!!!! Luckily I was in Mitchelstown at that stage.

Clearly the fine weather brought out far more cars than the organisers expected. Durrow has always been a victim of its own success. The show outgrew the original Durrow Castle setting 3 years ago and now the field and the whole exit plan needs to be re-looked at.

Apparently Durrow will be bypassed early next year which would at least mean there wouldn't wouldn't be passing traffic to contend with.

In saying all that, there was some variety of stuff on display and motorway access from both Cork and Dublin definitely makes it attractive.

Had a very enjoyable day, came home sunburnt, have to say i had no trouble getting out, left a 2.45 and took about 10 mins to get out. Photo's here http://s240.photobucket.com/albums/ff7/mycarpicss/Durrow%20April%202009/?start=all

what a nice day we had , nice weather , great turn out of cars, tractors & trucks.

good crowds , but fecking hell

WHAT A BLOODY NIGHTMARE GETTING OUT OF THE PLACE

that was the only let down of the day .

must say again though , great turn out of machinery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

I think it was pure luck on where you were in the carpark that made the difference on how fast you got out.
Im sure they will have a better plan for next year.

Never ever again. I drove down from Galway and was there early yesterday. We spent 3 and a half hours waiting to get out of the car park with my Manta and my fathers Daimler which has an overheating problem - which wasn't helped by the non moving traffic (and before someone says it, we did turn the engines off while not moving). I also overheard one of the marshalls telling someone to turn their car off to stop the overheating.
It shows complete and utter disrespect from the organisers for those who bring their pride and joy to these shows. If it wasn't for the cars and the people bringing them there wouldn't be a show.

I was talking to a few guys who owned American classics and they stated that some of their cars had €30000 worth of engines and they said never again would they display their cars. The number of parked up American cars as I was driving out was unbelieveable - Mustangs, Corvettes, Cadillacs.

Now not all was bad, the turn out of cars was excellent and it was great to see so many cars, but please show some respect to those that make the show by bringing their cars.

There wasn't a rush, we left in plenty of time (4.15) and couldn't get out, that's the point.

Thats the things you see. You're far better off to wait til later at these shows. We started heading for the gate at 5 and the traffic was still bad but not nearly as bad as it had been earlier in the afternoon (~3pm). A lot of the big classic shows (eg Mosney, Fingal) have the same problem as Durrow, only one way in and out and you end up with massive traffic jams. But you have two choices really. Leave about half 1 (ridiculous IMO) or else wait til later in the evening when a lot of stuff has already gone

Great day out and we just waited until after 6 to get out . Took 10 minutes. No show is any different that I've ever been to.

I've been going to Beaulieu for the last 20 years and it's a way bigger event. The differences are on the way in they have 2 lanes for entry and 1 lane for exit. In the afternoon, they switch to 2 out lanes and 1 in lane.

The other big difference at Beaulieu is that you are not trying to cross one of the busiest roads in the country. Until Durrow is bypassed, you won't see an improvement.

Had originally intended on bringing a classic but that didn't happen so family came along. They said never again partly as cars are not there thing but mainly because of the que to get out. It may be alright for exhibitors to wait until 6 o'clock but if you are only there to view then you are not going to want to spend the day there. When you want to leave you should be able. The organisers are responsible for a large part of the shambles but those leaving didn't help. In one instance there must have been at least 8 or 9 lines of traffic merging at one point. Then you would have some idiot create a new line. I could write a book on the madness that went on but I won't. It will do no good. There will be the same madness next year. Will have to decide if I will go again.

we could see there was a problem so we chilled and enjoyed the fine weather. There wasnt a lot of point getting upset about it, and eventually they opened a second gate for Cork bound traffic so we hopped in the car and were out in 2 minutes (at about 7pm) and home in 90 minutes...great day and next year I will be there and there wont be problems as the M8 well surely be open buy then

Any idea what club (if any) is organising it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭MorrisCooper

The fact that it was the last day of the Easter school holidays probably meant there was more traffic on the N8 than usual on a Sunday evening. As Jamie said, it probably didn't give the vintage scene any good press.

According to IVS, the show is organised by Durrow Vintage Club.

Part of the onsite congestion could probably be avoided by having a completely separate field for the non-classic cars. We ended up with an Astra and an Omega that got lost and parked beside the Minis.

good thinking, I arrived at 2.30 in the beetle (by no means the last person in a classic to arrive BTW ;) ) and I was ushered towards the general visitors carpark, up behind the tractors/stationary engines etc. I'm not miffed about having to park out of the "showground" but you're right, plenty of expansion room for the classics and a separate HUGE field for the visitors with loads of room to get out onto the road would be ideal for next year...

I just heard a little while ago why things went pear shaped at Durrow.
In the heat of the moment, a young boy got knocked down by a very impatient motorist trying to get out of the field.
At this point the Gardai took over from the organisers. This did not solve things. A garda was then knocked down by another impatient person--needless to say that this really annoyed them.
What happened then is that the Gardai then decided to inspect all these very impatient ,horn blowing peoples cars---I have been told that 10 people now face prosecution for non payment of VRT,TAX,NCT,reckless driving etc etc.
This all led to the hold up for all the innocent people behind.
Now I'm not saying that there isn't an organisational problem--there clearly is,,but for the majority of people it was a very enjoyable (if somewhat long)day.
