It's come to my attention that I have certain burning questions about NUIM that I'm sure boardsies can answer...

    1. What is in the Russell Library that is so amazing that you have to have a letter of recommendation if you're an undergrad and you'll be accompanied at all times? (Shoulda gone when the Keroac (sp?) scroll was there... meh)

    2. Why is the food nicer in Pugin Hall than it was in the canteen? Can we have that carrot and coriander soup in the new canteen please?

    3. Where's the coolest/most historic/most mysterious spot on the South Campus in yer opinions?

1, Russel library- pre 1850 manuscripts, obviously quite valuable/delicate, depending on what your lookin for, you can get in as an undergrad, i've been there twice and i'm a 1st year (neither times for kerouac)

2, Canteen- way better than pugin, in food, service and atmosphere, i know another board member who was asked to leave because 'he wasnt waiting on coffee'

3, Mysterous place- dont have one yet, but i'm only startin to venture beyond the library.....

Hey i graduated from maynooth 5 years ago (OMG still can't believe it's been that long)
Canteen is fantastic for food and service!! They still servicing the hot chicken sandwiches with garlic mayo??

Pugin is very old fashioned I think.

Mysterious probably the chapel or what was the name of the building with the room that's closed off. was it the geog dept? I did geog and I can't remember. It was either music building or geog over on the south campus

    Love that campus!!!

Where do all my USB keys go?

Why does the Ribena in Fizz smell like cabbage?

Who's the very tall beautiful man with the long red curly hair?

    1. Old maps, many old first editions, and some excellent research sources such as mission travel diaries. Complete 6 inch 1846 OS map collection. The bookcases are behind velvet ropes and handling is restricted in case of contamination from hands / undergrad cooties (see previous post)

    2. Staff get better food. But not everything, my supervisor ate exclusively in the canteen until its premature death by fire - something nice and communal about it. And many senior staff are a*ses. Not running into the other faculty during lunch is missed....

    3. The old 'blood room' (alcove, top floor rhetoric).

Come for the sights; including the magical photocopier, the filing cabinet of 1000 corpses, and the wastebasket of doom.

See if you can solve the mystery of the blood/varnish stain

    2. See menu - may be cabbage juice

    3. ?

I think 3 is Jesus. There's loads of pics of him on South Campus. Also, Pugin kicks old canteens ass. Food prepared in a hygenic environment gets me every time

Ghost room Not sure how accurate this article is, but it's got the basics of the story anyway.

A lecturer in the history department (cant remember her name, she gave a paper a few years back on suicide) has a piece on the incident in her PhD thesis.

All in order apart from anything beyond the student suicide

Oh, probably Georgina .... damnit, can't remember her surname either! >.<

Lol, I meant I wasn't sure how accurate the basic facts were, though they certainly sound similar to what I was told before ... I presumed people would discount dead dogs etc. :D

    EDIT: Georgina Laragy

Even when the canteen was there, I always went to Pugin for dinner.

    It was far superior.

If I'm ever back in Maynooth around midday, i still go in to Pugin for dinner.

Man the canteen had some of the worst food on earth.

A new mystery- the Londis lady has cheered up slightly... I went in twice today and usually she gives me my change and just kinda mumbles... today she says (twice, at 12oc and 4oc) "That's great, thanks a million" WITH A SMILE... the only other times I've seen her smile are wen the other lady tells her she can clock off.. amazing..

Also, and without starting a "JH-Londis-is-ridiculously-overpriced-and-understocked" rant, they dont sell tissues. Seriously, they sell seven different types of cold remedy but no tissues? Hmmm...

Hello and welcome! This is probably one of the busiest forums on boards: hundreds of regular posters, thread after thread of stuff, and ... hell. Like, 5 people post here. Usually complaining.

    But welcome!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭PrivateEye

^ Actually the biggest Maynooth Mystery is 'who are the other 3/4 people here who post in that NUIM section of Boards?'

Man the canteen had some of the worst food on earth.
    True.

I think most of us just miss it as a social space.
NUIM is one of the least socially friendly colleges in the world when it comes to lay out. In the JH for instance, two doors facing each other with a commercial building at each end. Place is designed so you basically spend a fortune!

You can't just sit in the restaurant the way you could the canteen sadly. A four hour break can be near impossible to kill in NUIM compared to ther Unis.

    From the above link:
The tale, which seems to begin with a suicide in the room around 1842, the subject being a student who was compelled to take his own life for some reason or another (accounts are not too careful about such details). The next tenant in the room was next found dead one morning, having slit his throat with a razor - the same method of death used by the tenant before him. The third tenant reported being irresistibly urged to follow suit, and saw strange black scurrying shapes in the room when nobody - or thing - could be there. one night when he was about to use the razor himself, the student leaped out the window into Rhetoric Yard. He broke several bones but the fall saved his life.

I dunno why, but I lolled a little.

    • Why is it that no matter what the weather is like everywhere else, Maynooth is always cold/wet/muddy?
    • Why did the timetable have a lecture in the Aula Maxima immediately followed by a lecture in Rye Hall? I can't walk that fast :(
    • Why is the foot bridge almost vertical?

The bridge is fine alright. Beats waiting at traffic lights anyway. Now, back to thesis...

I drive to Maynooth from Dundrum. If it's sunny here, as soon as I enter Kildare the weather just deteriorates immediately. There's usually a wall of fog/rain/sleet just waiting for me.

Because I have no grips left on my trainers, going up that bloody bridge in Winter is like doing the travelator part in Gladiators.

    Four steps up/slide back down.
Pretend to look casual as pretty girls walk by giggling.
Eventually haul myself along by the railing like some drunkard after 15 pints.

Still better than going the other way though.

I worke in the glorious fizz for the best part of a year but as i was recently let go i have no guilt for telling you that yes we did in fact put cabbage juice in all the ribena to keep down costs.
Not as bad as what we did to the vodka though. ;)
