Cheap, unflaoured whey from bulkpowders and ONLY as a pwo shake..i found it gave me (more of )a belly if throughout the day.
I've wasted lots of money on fancy supplements over the years and imo most of them are useless.
There are no "herbal steroids" or "legal anabolic fat burners",most supplements are just unnecessary extra expense, wasting money you could spend on steak and eggs.
If you want results you need to train and eat,its not complicated and it shouldnt be terribly expensive either.

BCAA - Used it for a while useless and waste.
HMB (Beta Hydroxy Beta Methylbutyrate) - seems to increase my strength and I have low very low body fat so I give this working stammp.
Amino Whey System - I recover fast/ hardly get injured or sick so I give this a Plus.
Creatine Micronized - Really can't prove if this work or not!
MassX - Just started using it so I can't rate.
Ultimate Protein ( Whey Protein Concentrate 80% + Milk Protein 85%+ vitamin premix) - used it for a while but its finished 100% worked

interesting that you rate hmb higher than bcaa's. ive heard/read that hmb is crap, it may work for 1st time trainers or teens. i know for a fact that bcaa's work, but you need to have everything else done right for it to work.

When I was bodybuilding I'd use whey and Vitamin 'S', and as Degsy says nothing, absolutely nothing can replicate steroids or eph/clen, so keep your money for good nutrious foods.

I would agree with Degsy and Mairt. Supplements are no magic formula and cannot replace a solid diet, hard work in the gym and quality rest. I would rather eat a 10oz steak then drink any protein shake (no matter how good it tasted)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

Supplements aren't supposed to replace a solid diet, the clue is in the name.

Fact of the matter is, supplements such as whey are just a convenient alternative for many people.

Well the taste of the bcaa is just terrible, I have tasted some bad stuffs but this is the worst. You can't even mix it with milk. I will give it a two weeks trial after my competition is try finish it!!

I'd rather eat a steak as well but have I got the money to be buying loads of steaks? No. Are supplements a nice and cheap alternative when needed? Yes. I love my food as much as anyone else but sometimes you have to cut corners. I got sick of eating 4+ chicken fillets a day personally.

I used the tablets for awhile, I didn't know if I should swallow them or stick 'em up my arse!..

You can buy glucosamine as a drink now, I have it as a diluted orange juice - its really good, tastes like juice so its easy to have with brekkie and only requires one drink a day.

I get it from Holland & Barretts and costs (I think) about €16- a bottle, which gives 40 drinks.

All the nutrients your body needs you can get from food and drink - the 'a good alternative if you haven't time to get real food' doesn't wash with me - you had time to order the protein powder/go to the shop to get it, didn't you?

Plus whey protein is crammed full of preservatives and other dubious looking ingredients - most of it is likely not even used by the body considering a regular diet will get you all the protein you need and more - save your money for something spending it on! Esp in a recession!!

Time to order off internet? Two minutes. Time to go out and buy steaks etc, cook them? Em, quite a difference :D

Actually your body absorbs and uses the protein from refined whey products MUCH more efficiently than protein from meat etc.

As many people know its the conveninace factor that Protein powders and supplements are used. I would rather knock back a shake after a weights session then a lump of steak in my hands. lso the fact that the protein shake will be used up faster then the steak. Don't get me wrong nothing can replace a good diet in terms of getting your protein allocation each day but shakes/protein powder have their use aswell

its alrite in a little fruit juice, just knock it back like a shot. then follow up with water.

ive never looked forward to a protein shake, the smell, the taste, the sticky whey left in the glass/shaker. the smell of a shaker the next day.

theres something about cooking a steak thats so satisfying, the preparation, sizzle of the oil, the smell, the taste, the anticipation of that 1st bite and the juices flowing in your mouth...

cooking is good for the mind, its not a waste of time.

you can cut meat into strips and put it in a bag to take with you. as long as you have a steady supply of protein and you time the meals right it doesnt matter too much what source of protein you use post workout. if you know the average times that diff protein sources are digested/absorbed and utilized in the body than you can eat them at the best time so that by the time your finished working out, the protein is in your system ready to be used for muscle tissue repair.

ive used On whey, used to buy it from bodybuilding.com. its ok mixed with milk but a steak is nicer. syntrax nectar- fruit punch flavor is the best ive tasted, it tastes like a fruit juice/sports drink. but its too expensive.

Post work out - RAM (nutrition X) & Creatine
    Before bed - Whey protein
The rest of my protein I get from food.

Reason I take RAM is that it works very well after training with 2:1 ratio of simple carbs (sugars) to protein. It also has arganine and glutamine; only thing it is missing is creatine which I add. Reason I take whey before bed is that if i ate solid foods close to bed time, I would suffer from indigestion. It makes logical sense to me get protein in before bed so it's working while I sleep.

None of the above is particularly expensive and is used for convenience and to supplement my diet.

Weight gainers are usually just a load of sugar, probably the worst way to source your calories with the possible exception of beer!

Think maltodextrin is the main ingrediant with whey being the second, im only weight gainer months and certainly not getting fat so its no harm, i need the calories

    Height: 5' 7'' / 171 cm
    Weight: 77kg / 12.2 stone / 169.4 lbs

About once every 6 months I get the following stuff from MyProtein.co.uk
    • Whey (use frequently)
    • Glutamine (use frequently)
    • Creatine (use in occaisonal cycles)

The whey is handy. I probably get enough (or almost enough) protein from my diet nowadays (milk, eggs, tuna, nuts) but this wasn't the case a year ago. I also eat more these days. I've put on a stone since starting with whey 18 months ago.

Glutamine seems to aid recovery and prevent the feeling of absolute death for days after a tough session. Lots of milk and carbs can be substitued for the same effect.

Creatine is useful when doing weeks of heavy deadlifting or squats. Not keen on the extra 2kg of water weight though if running / cycling. My real non creatine weight as of a couple of weeks ago was 75kg.

According to my vet, it's no good you just piss a lot of it out if you're training a lot. Shame because I have a really strong gag reflex and hate taking pills so I really want the drink to be as effective. Yes I said my vet, she handles most of my medical needs as she's my mate, beats going to the doctor and I haven't had fleas for years.

In heavy training periods I use Glutamine, creatine and arginine. That's for 6-8 sessions per week. Now I'm back dow to 4/5 I just eat food.
