I read this forum quite alot and have just started back int he gym properly. I'm doing HIIT on the treadmill and some weights for my arms and upper bodyand sometimes abs although I really hate situps.

I'm about 5ft6in and 10 stone (I'm a girl) and I tend to carry my weight on my upper body. I'm assuming if I want arms like Michelle Obama i'll need to lose quite a bit of fat aswell as building muscle. Is some HIIT and some weights the best plan for that. I'm trying to watch my diet too.

Yup Watch your diet , Do some Upper body exercise , but don't neglect your lowerbody aswell , any increase in muscle will help in loosing fat , Best thing to do would be squats and lunges , Build nice quads and Glutes ;)

Take a look at today's Indo. There's a piece by Damien Maher on how to get arms like Michelle O. He says it's quite funny how women who are busy curling 2kg dumbbells in the gym have no problem curling a 10kg gym bag at the end.....

If you don't like sit ups you could try some form of leg raises. in the gym you can do hanging leg raises raises from a pull up bar, or you can use the leg raise seat thing:

I don't much care for sit ups either.

if your using the leg raise remember to try and rotate and curl your hips upward at the top , your stomach muscles connect to your hips not your legs

What's so special about her arms?

These are some serious lady arms:

    She's not a teenager.

She's not a professional athlete or model or anyone whose work depends on her looks.

    She's a mother.

She looks really fit, really toned, but not scary.

I meant what I said as tongue in cheek, you're right of course.

She's quite tall (5' 11") so her arms are long - it'll be a little more difficult to get the same look if you're shorter.

Here's an article from the New York Times about Mrs. O's arms (you need to register to read the article but it's free)

quote: “The shoulders are important because they create the whole illusion of the upper body and mask flaws below,” Mr. Schoenfeld said. “The side part of the deltoid muscle is what gives you a shapely look.”

“Trainers suggest one specific exercise for that: lateral raises. ”

lateral raises... I hate them so much! but still do them :(

Would I do lateral raises in addition to the shoulder press machine or instead of?

As well as. Shoulder press primarily works your anterior deltoid whereas lateral raises work your lateral deltoid then rows work your posterior deltoid. In order to get great shoulders (which set off great arms) you need to target the back, front and sides.
