Beer and Muscle

How damaging is beer at the week ends to a fitness programme? Obviously we all know that beer and getting fit do not sit well together but does having say 6-7 pints of a saturday (provided its not follwed by a kebab/ curry etc) significantly hamper a muscle building programme? I eat clean and work out reasonably hard but I regularly lose a day a week to being hungover/ lethargic and not keeping to the 5-6 quality meals a day thing. Thoughts please

The problem with boozing and training is that hangovers and being dehydrated affect the quality of your workouts.
You also will tend to either miss meals due to feeling sick or stuff yourself with carby, salty foods(alcohol depletes salt stores and causes cravings).
You really shouldnt be missing one day a week due to hangovers, drink water before during and after your boozing session.
Make sure to try and eat properly and dont binge on junk.
Personally,i'd drink 7 pints on the way to a drinking session so you're not hitting it very hard at all.

I always wondered why I go through murderous amounts of Tayto and Romantica when I'm hungover, but not a good dinner.

I'd be the same as the OP, I'd lose a day due to a hangover. I'd go through a bit more than his 6 or 7, but I'm a pretty pathetic drinker in general.

Yeah but I've also been known to have a few crafty whiskeys and some such stuff which makes the next day a write- off workout wise. And as for drinking before during and after a booze up I don't think this is gonna happen for me. I never go to the gym the day after being out, I heard your better off resting up seen as your liver has already taking a hammering the night before. I agree with you on the eating well the next day thing I try stick to that.

If i were working 6 days a week I wouldn't really feel guilty taking one off!! But as it has been said above keeping a good diet is important.

I totally hate this... if i have a big night out on the drink all i want to do the next day is eat **** and scratch myself.. i feel like my next session in the gym is a waste but i need to do it to get back to where i was before! a vicious circle of demoralization! :pac:

I.e. Thurs: Bench reps of 60
    Fri: Out on the beer
Sat/Sun: Struggling to bench reps of 50

    WTF?

Yes, this is what I am talking about. I think the only way around it is to lay off the booze for a while but to be honest the mere thought of doing this scares the living s**t out of me

I was of the same mind at christmas but i felt booze was getting the better of my workouts and my mood.
I gave up after new years day and i've been off it since.
i've never felt better, the fat is dropping off me,i can train harder, never miss workouts and all my lifts are up.
Not only that booze costs an absolute fortune these days so i've been able to save a few bob to get stuff done round the house.
Give it up for a while, you wont know yourself!

Yeah but I'll miss my saturday nights in Renards and beer seems to have an infallible ability to make women more attractive
