Recruitment Moratorium

Now that there will be a moratorium brought in on Recruitment, I just wanted to get members of ES opinions on it.

Will the ban on recruitment put you in a situation where every service is going to be, potentially, understaffed?

Specifically for An Garda Siochana: Can you see the number of Reservists being increased in an attempt to portray that the Govt isn't letting number of Gardai fall? Can ye subsequently see an increase in the powers of Reservists? Would ye want this, or continued Recruitment of 90 full timers per class?

    Any other issues, please discuss:)

Especially for full-time members: Is their anyone who posts here able to remember back to before the increased recruitment began, back before the days of the 1000+ candidates entering Templemore?

Was their a moratorium on recruitment in the 80's? When returning to recruitment, was it at a slow pace as predicted it will be next time round now?

Everyone is different and I'm just curious and wondered if anyone who posts here actually went through similiar experience before? and if it helped or hindered their determination?

I was just looking at this the other day by Garda reg numbers. In the 10 years previous to when I joined approx 2000 Gardai were recruited, in the 10 years after there has been approx 7000. It is obvious therefore that the age profile has dropped dramatically and I expect the government know this and are now hoping that reducing intake of trainee Gardai will more than cover ordinary retirement(once the cull of the public sector worker who can retire, from the pension levy and gratutiy tax has finished).

Does anyone think this will affect candiates all ready in the recruitment process?

Sorry Mac but there's every chance, I can remember it happening before in the late nineties. A new recruitment was started before they got to the end of the groups in the previous one:(

Yes. Open for correction but last years intakes were about 300 every 4 months???

Now its back to 100 per phase as it was before. this means that the recruitment per year will be smaller which will make it harder to get in.

If your past interview stage then your grand. If your placed over 1,000 in aptitude test then best of luck. Hope this isnt bad news for anyone.

Do ya have any sources for that??
Be very interested to know for sure as I passed my interview in November. It would be very bad news if I had to start the whole process again when recruitment resumes.
    I can only hope!!

Passed the interview phase in August, still waiting on a date for a medical and PCT, but I think my ticket is near enough if they continue to fill the 400 places or so for this year, but as you mite guess Im considerably anxious about th whole situation.

My contacts in the college tell me that normal recruitment will continue, as in 90-100 per phase. No stop on recruitment just a major cut on it. So it just all depends on when you guys did app test and when that particular recruitment runs out if you follow me. If interviews are done i wouldnt go worrying.

Note to new applications......score under the thousand in app test for quick interview!!!

Im glad to hear that, I was thinking they would have to continue to take some new recruits ever year at least, because if they stoped recruiting all togother they would have to effectively shut down templemore except for maybe internal training courses.

It's not just recruitment, it's promotion also.

Have heard that too Goldie, the inspector's promotion list has been cut due to finance cuts in HR and so will have a knock on effect. Sorry to anyone that this has happened to, as I know a good few on the Sergeant's promotion list.

    Sergeants list cut too... ridiculous

    Hi Nice Guy,
Just wondering when your contact said this.. as in is it since the announcement last Friday? Thanks for this anyway! Glimmer of hope, I'm really starting to panic over it. Have interview done since Aug also and waiting on med date still. Getting very worried now..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭djtechnics1210

Not sure about that, as far as i know its just units with detectives that its effecting, so RSU will be grand.

Im in the same boat as you blue belle, its very demoralising to think we might be left in limbo for a year or two, here is hoping people who have got passed interview stage will be given the chance to get to templemore after all we worked hard to get this far!!!!!!!!!!:)

Dont be getting worried lads. Have faith. Recruitment has def slowed down, but will not stop.

As for my mate in college, someone pm'd me yesterday or sunday and i txt him. Keep the faith. Ye'll be grand. Start worrying next jan if ye havint heard anything and if its really what you want (and not just a secure job!) then you'll eventually get it and we all wish ye the best!:D

O O and as regard date for medical, as i said in another post somewhere today, i got a call one sunday evening many moons ago saying to report to HQ for medical next day (i was within first 200 of my app test so got quick call). 6am following morning off to dublin passed medical, told report to T/more next day, passed that reported for training the following monday. it happens fast sometimes:D

lads, don't be worrying at all, there'll always be intakes going down to the college, granted not as big as the last 3 or so years but they have to keep the numbers ticking along!!!

Like what "nice guy always" said it can happen very quick, so be patient!! I've had a good few colleagues now who that happened to, with getting calls on a thursday, doing medical on a friday and going Templemore the following week to do PCT test and a start date shortly after same

So it's official, there will be no recruitment for Security Services until end of 2010! :(

Its not official, if the minister decides in the morning that we can't let garda numbers decrease and let all the work to increase the force to its figure today when times were good to mean nothing, then recruitment will continue. However intakes will be low, but a complete freeze, not likely.

The country needs guards and prison officers more than ever

Ahh s***e, does that mean they are basically closing down templemore till next year? Im still waiting on a medical,so all I can hope for is that they call people for medicals etc so they have people ready to go to Templemore when the embargo is called off...hopefully.

Medicals only have a period of a year before you have to do them again, if this "freeze" is occurring, then it would make no sense to conduct medicals. So if meds and pcts are still underway, you can be sure recruitment is too

I think they just filled the may intake, has anyone been called for medicals for August? or still waiting with medicals done?

Will give HQ a ring tomorow when I'm not at work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭Hooch

At total freeze is unpractible and unrealistic. As it stands with retirement we will be under strenght by August to critical levels. The recruitment has and will stay cut down but it has to continue!

When I say recruitment, I mean new recruitment campaigns. There will be intake's, but I can't see any fresh campaigns coming.

FWIW don't think this won't happen because it may do. It happened for 3 years in the 80s. Ironically talking to any of the (DMR(A)) lads who worked through this they were sorry to see the ban lifted because they were making so much money on overtime. Great forward planning as usual.

Recruitment ban leads to training base closing down for two years

    Stephen O'Brien

GARDA numbers are set to fall from their current level of 14,000 as training at the Garda College in Templemore is being wound down on a temporary basis. Senior officers are preparing to mothball student education for nearly two years due to a recruitment ban imposed by Brian Lenihan until 2011.

Courses for serving gardai in driving skills, weapons and tactics, career development and management will continue at the Co Tipperary institution.

But teaching staff and garda union representatives have been told to plan for a 20-month recruitment freeze after the last batch of 100 student gardai begin their training in May.

Plans for two further student intakes in July and September have been cancelled, The Sunday Times has learned. The full impact of the public service recruitment ban will not be felt in Templemore until later next year and in 2011, when the large intakes of 2007 and 2008 will have completed training.

Numbers were reduced from 1,100 last year to just 400 for 2009, but only half the 2009 intake will now proceed with further recruitment considered from 2011 onward.

Dozens of kitchen and cleaning staff have already been laid off and large numbers of training officers redeployed to routine policing duties from what was once “the largest employer in north Tipperary”, according to Noel Coonan, the local Fine Gael TD.

Coonan branded the garda recruitment ban as “insane politics” while criminal gang warfare continued unabated in Limerick, Dublin and other major urban centres.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said the hiring ban would start “a downward spiral” from the day recruitment ceased and the force would decline by about 350 for every year of the freeze.

“It will affect rural Ireland first,” said a GRA spokesman, “because the average age of members of the force is older outside the cities. If a unit has one sergeant and four gardai, you could have officers prevailing on an older colleague to put off retirement or that unit could be left under strength.”

A Garda spokesman said the force had no plans to close all or part of the Garda College, but confirmed that no letters of offer had yet been dispatched for student intake in July or September and that there were more than 300 garda and civilian staff there.

Basic garda training is carried out in five phases over two years, with three blocs of 20 weeks, 12 weeks and two weeks in college. Two blocs of 22 weeks and 38 weeks are spent on probation at a station.

Coonan said locals would be affected as hundreds worked at the college in civilian post and families provided lodgings for student gardai.

    Source

Thats going to hurt the local economy and anybody who bought houses after being transfered there.

Where would you hear the likes of it! A country in ruin, and one of the answers is to stop recruiting gardai

Was chatting to some of the Phase V due to pass out next week and in the nine months or so that they have been away from the college, staff has been cut by at least half, doesn't look good at all.
