It definitely helps. It improves recovery and makes it easier for your body to build muscle, but it's not magic. Everything else has to be right too.

Yes, whey protein will help build muscle, with the additional muscle you should easily be able to put on the weight you want.
Take it first thing in the morning and after you workout, also before if you don't use anything instead like Nitric Oxide.
Basically your light at the moment, eat lots and lift heavy

No problem - it really is as simple as...

    1) Plan out your diet / workout

    2) Lift heavy

    3) Eat everything in sight (well, mainly good food!) and ask for seconds

    4) Get huge :)

Best of luck! Also, consider keeping a training log on here as it is nice to see your progression from week to week.

    .

Just to pick up on this, while what jimmy is saying in some ways is right a lot of people seem to take this as an exscuse to eat absouletely EVERYTHING like curries, burgers and kebabs.

When I was younger I was given this information and I piled on the pounds, sure I got big, but not the right kind of big. So be sure to eat lots but just make sure its lots of good clean food.

Imo, you can get the protein you need/want from your general diet...fish, chicken, eggs, milk, nuts etc. etc.

I think there is way too much emphasis put on supplements, particularly for those who just train as part of a healthy lifestyle and not as athletes.

True, but whey powder is just another dairy product at the end of the day. It is part of my "general diet" now, I like the taste of whey shakes and have them at any time, not just with training/recovery in mind.

If more people traditionally ate whey in their diets it would not be viewed as a supplement, just like you do not hear people calling milk, cottage cheese or chicken "supplements", even though many people do supplement their diet with additional amounts of milk/cheese/chicken which they would not ordinarily have eaten.

True, I tend to think of whey as Dairy in powder form. I use it in baking and smoothie making, and I use cottage cheese in making ice-cream. Though I recently discovered that if you have a child's ice-cream making kit around, you can use it to make lovely icecream with whey and water.

I have to agree with you since seeing my protein count for the day for the first time on fitday.com. I've apparently taken in 217 grams of protein today, and that's with only one 23 gram shake, and I'd normally have three a day! So it would seem that I'd be getting enough protein without any shakes.

In saying that they're obviously useful post-workout.

As mentioned by others Whey Protein is used to supplement your diet not replace it i.e have a shake after your training and in the morning, or whenever it would be conveniant for you if you can't get real food in. Your diet should however be 90% clean food such as steak, eggs, milk, nuts lean meats such as chicken, Turkey and fish. Also don't forget plenty of Fruits and veg as well as healthy carbs such as oats, wholemeal pasta, rice and bread. On a bulk don't forget to drink plenty of full fat millk (don't mind the inferior skim milk crap).

milk is great! but i dont agree billy that slimline milk is crap, theres still the same amount of protein in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,439 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

I don't like slimlime milk becasue it is so much watered down. I prefare fresh full fat milk not only because its full of calories, more natural and great for a bulk (which the OP needs to do) but it has more calcium then skimmed milk

Why? It's got the exact same amount of protein, which is what matters. When you drink full-fat milk all you're getting is a sh*t-load more of saturated fat.

Forget about supplements for the moment until we see what you are eating and the type of workout you are following.

    List out the following:
    • your typical daily diet
    • your weekly workout plan

I presume you mean it "tastes" watered down, but it is not watered down.

Actually there is usually slightly more protein in it. When you take the fat out the other substances increase accordingly. But also they usually add in extra protein to skim milk so it does not taste as "watery". I remember drinking skimmed milk in the 80's and it seemed seemed more watery back then.

And some people want to have that sat fat, and the calories that come with it. It would be similar to people drinking lucozade and people warning against it having lots of sugar in it.

I second this, I view whey / casein as part of my normal diet now much like a couple of chicken breasts or a steak. In fact I'm more likely to skip the burger and chips if i know i can have a whey shake with milk and ice, which I find pretty tasty

I keep going on about how ice is so nice in shakes, dunno if everybody has tried it. I have seen many saying they do not like shakes very much and I can only guess it is room temp which I would find horrible. I have a mini blender called a magic bullet, somebody pm'd me and had got one in superquinn a week or so ago, only €30. It crushes ice with ease, mixes the whey perfectly and froths it up really well too.

Just had my PWO meal now, a plate of jaffa cakes and a frosty cold strawberry whey shake :pac:

If you have no blender you could stick ice in a sandwich bag and hammer it on a breadboard to smash it up.

    Wow that's quite a difference!
Is that increase mainly in lean muscle or is there a good % of fat in there too?
I'm trying to get to reach similar goals to yourself.

I'm like you were before, 1.85m and about 72kg but I didn't think I was underweight like has been mentioned by someone earlier in the thread!

    Wow
I have a mate who's the same height and weighs less than 10 stone. Rocks the whole skinny jeans, stick-silhouette look.

    Chicks love him.

Just get a gainer and worry about cutting a bit afterwards. Hyperbolic Muscle Fuel Mass from USN us ****ing ridiculous and really heavy to drink, feels like a real meal. I put on nearly 1lbs a day when I was on it for around 2-3 weeks following the maximum recommended dosage. The calorie count is so high that when you stop taking it you'll be ****in starving all the time because your body wants that high calorie count and will seek it out in the food that you eat instead! :)

I'm a hard gainer to, I feel the pain, but it's been a good dedicated year

there are many days i can go from breakfast to dinner on 2 shakes and 2-3 paleo bars or flapjacks.

Its still comes down to total calorie intake and then taking a look at the quality of the food in the rest of the diet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,704 ✭✭✭squod

Been taking shakes with dinner (easier for me to hold them down). Also discovered the health shop sell VitC + Zinc in one easy pill. Anyway, the shakes have helped IMO.

No fat, man, i wundt go for 93 kg for getting fat body, noway.
-I was starting from buying whey protein, dont buy cheap ones.
-I got timetable for geeting mass, from my friend (hes trainer, bodybuilder), if you want let me me know i cant write it to you.
    -3-4 days per week

Was using protein shakes for about 6 month. But then i didnt need it. I just ate planty of quality food and results were good.
If you take food, take it 4-5 times per/day with small portions.
I dont use protein now, its very good for start.
And main rule if you want get bigger, have plenty of food, eat everything what you see))). But be careful with fat, because if you are not training well, then it will go to fat.
Any questions give me shout. good luck with the results, you will definetly get if you want it
