Lower Abs - sticking out more on right hand side

In the past weeks I have noticed that my lower abs (around belly button level) stick out more on the right hand side than on the left.

I can only see this when I am looking down at my toes with my t-shirt off. It is not noticeable sideways on in the mirror.

Also, my spinal erectors on the left seem to me more prominent than those on the right.

Do you think this is down to being right handed, as I would probably carry things in my right hand more often, causing my left hand side spinal erectors to be stressed more... and somehow the right lower abs have to compensate..?

I never noticed it before. I don't think the ab issue is a hernia, but it may be a remote possibility from heavy deadlift and squat. I have no pain and am not looking for medical advice. I want to know if abs are sometimes bigger on one side in the way that arms and legs often are.

    Thoughts?

The question has to be posed..... why exactly were you looking down at your toes with your shirt off!!:D:pac:

Orla in Sports Med Ireland addressed this with me when I went to her a few weeks back actually. Everyone has a dominant side, and it has nothing to do with which side you use to write/kick a ball etc. An easy way to see it (for a fat fecker like me anyway) is the stand in front of a mirror with your shirt off (pics or GTFO jokes aside) and look at the inward curve of your love handle (just below your ribs) area straight on from the front. €100 says one curve is higher up your side than the other.

I'm not too clued up on the details but in my case it gave her a clue as to what side of my back was compensating for my dormant glutes when I was deadlifting and she could diagnose the issue.

If my abs were anywhere near the surface of my stomach when I look down I would compare with you but alas that's a story more suited to the lipotrim thread.

Did she give you any exercises to help strengthen the weaker side??

No apparently it's neurological or neural (whatever the correct word is) so you'd be better of doing sudoku to correct it than any particular movement :pac:

It's not something that needs correcting as far as she was concerned. But she may have just been mesmerized by my awesome lovehandles.

Ah no worries, mine is particularly bad because of my scoliosis. I got a load of exercises off my physio before to improve it but I've since lost the sheet and forgotten half of them so was hoping I could rob some of yours without having to pay for a return visit to the doc for the same sheet!! :D

A word of caution while what kevpants said about dominant sides is true, if its something you have only noticed recently i would error on the side of caution and seek professional advice in case its something more

Thanks for the input. I shall check my lovehandle setup later :pac:

Does this talk about dominant sides cover the right lower abs Vs left lower back mentioned in my initial post?

If I had a dominant side wouldn't the right abs and right lower back be stronger, as opposed to right abs and left lower back?

No. Kinda forgot about it. Still there though. Right abs poking out a bit more.

If you are bothered go to a doctor. It hasn't killed me in the 2 years since I started the thread ... but I have no clue as to the background of your situation.

Sorry, but I cannot help you.
