Coffee and Workouts?

    Hello All,

    I am 51 days in to my diet and everything seems to be going well I have lost 39 pounds so far through diet and workout at the gym.

    I have heard that Coffee before a workout is good for fat loss, can anyone possibly confirm this?

    The caffeine might give up a bit of a kick but is it really worth it? Probably not.

    What was your starting weight? You're loosing on average over 5lbs a week which is A LOT, and depending on your starting weight it could be more muscle than fat.

    Interesting.

    Have you found yourself loosing less weight as the weeks go on? Or is 5lbs a week the norm? Do you know your bodyfat % before and now?

    Is it about 4-6 pounds a week I find.

    I go to the gym everyday for about an hour and 30 mins.

    Doing a mix of cardio and weights.

    I have coffee every morning with breakfast before the gym and it usually perks me up, but it's not a powerful enough stimulant to contribute to fat/weight loss.

    Out of curiosity, what's your diet plan?

    Losing 5 lbs. a week consistently is very solid work, good job.

    I am eating Lots of Fish, Chicken and lots of protein. I have carbs but only in the form of veg, try to stay of "white carbs"

    Today for Example:

    Breakfast: Small can of Beans and glass of MultiVitamin Juice
    Lunch: Left over salmon from last night , with brocolli mixed with scallions, tablespoon of low fat yogurt, 2 gherkins, and beetroot. Glass of water.
    Afternoon: Some Pistachio Nuts.
    Dinner: In process of making it Chilli Chicken made a while ago with cabbage . Water

    This evening maybe some more nuts or fruit. Probably coffee to test out whether it will work with my workout.

    Gym at 7pm

    Start 20 mins very brisk walking on treadmill.
    5 sets of 20 reps on squats, currently only doing 10 kg either side of bar.
    Leg Press currently up to 200kgs.
    Benching, only can manage 12.5kgs either side at the moment.
    Do 3-4 laps of track outside gym jogging coupled with sprinting.
    Finally I like to play basketball for 30 mins if the courts are free.

    That diet plan does not look like you are taking in many calories. Are you male or Female?

    And do you eat anything post workout? The body needs both carbs and protein post work out to recover and build muscle. If it doesn't get it, it will start to cannibalise itself, so you will lose muscle as well as fat (afaik anyway). Thats not good in the long run.

    Well generally my workouts are in the afternoon so my dinner follows my workout , where as on Wednesday nights, I go in the evening.

    coffee helps you lose weight (in moderation). The caffeine increases your heart rate just as if you were jogging, so yeah it probably helps kick start your heart rate (& sweating) before you head to the gym.

    If im ever doing a presentation in the office I make sure not to have a coffee in the morning because it contributes to the sweating if your a bit nervous.

    39 pounds lost is impressive. well done

    If anything increased my heart rate as if I were jogging without me even having to stand up then I'd stay the hell away from it. It's a bit stupid saying it helps you loose weight.

    OP, what you're doing is obviously working, so stick with it, although personally it looks like you're not eating enough, and I'd say you're losing muscle along with the fat, but I'm no expert tbh.

    a good strong cup of coffee/espresso helps performance in all types of activity and has been proven over and over again (i am not going searching for my research papers so take my word for it).

    Now does a cappuccino work? No Does instant work - no.

    Overall do not use it before every session and save it for the tough ones

    I find a good strong cup of coffee before a workout helps, but only if I'm a bit of a mental funk. I wouldn't drink it before every workout, just when I feel that I need it. Otherwise I reckon you just get used to it and come to rely on it mentally.

    I think you are cutting down on your calories too much and your expectations are too high, and that your current method is unhealthy. You should not lose more than 2 pounds per week, and that is standard...all doctors agree on that. You should be eating more a couple days a week to keep your body out of starvation mode.

    This is a lifestyle change...not a diet.

    Starvation mode is what happens when your body perceives it is not going to get the proper amount of food...this only takes 3 days of too low of caloric intake. Then your metabolism slows down and so does your weight loss.
