So I'm going ask again for your questions. Ha... promise we'll do a better job of getting to all the questions this time around.

    Just stop him rambling on!

My question - has the Daft.ie stake changed the way he and the other admins think about boards.ie and thier place in it? Is it less 'thier baby' now?

Hey! Don't knock that channel.... you get to see Blitzkrieg on it all the time!

It's for RTÉ so I plan on having naked Brian Cowen t-shirt printed up to wear on the day.

    Your tagline is
    Oppressing. Please wait.
    [XXXXXXXX--------]

Have you ever changed that progress bar to reflect a greater or lesser level of oppression? Similar to the DEFCON system.

Are you enjoying delegating to the ComMas? Or finding it difficult passing the reins to them?

Where do you see boards going from here? Do you think it may be about to hit a critical mass in Ireland where there physically isn't any more internet savvy people to join (besides the banees etc obviously)?

Do you tihnk the subdivision of boards into small sub communities as opposed to one is a good thing or bad?

Now that the CommMans etc are all on board, are we gonna see an expansion from the current community produced podcasts to encompass more media outlets such as this magazine idea he was interested in before?

I'm still very interested in helping out with such a project, and I reckon it could be quite good indeed with the pool of talent from across the site.

Being the founder of Boards, you've seen an enormous amount of threads over the years.

Does any thread stick in your memory from your time here? If so, what is it and why?

Also, are there any forums that you thought would be more successful than they have been?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

What do your parents make of all this? Obviously they would be proud etc, but do they 'get' whole internet forum thing? Did you ever need a dig out form them in the early days for bandwidth or the like?

    Are they boardsies themselves?

How much time do the founders (heh) now spend on the site, given that the site now has employees?
Do the founders still enjoy it as much as they did ten years ago?

What are DeV and cloud's personal visions for the future of the site?

Have you ever put any serious thought into moving the servers to another country to avoid certain legal issues?

Do you feel the site has become less manageable with its continued growth?

Do you feel that the expansion of social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo have had a positive or negative effect on this site?

Seeing as how bus companies do not offer a 24 hours bus service, would you say that the words to the song the wheels on the bus are completely inaccurate?

What's your favourite/least favourite aspects of boards?

What's your most memorable boards moment?

Why you set boards up & how big you envisioned things would get - how much bigger you think it'll get & how...

If you could just press a button & oppress someone, who would you choose - boardsie & IRL?! :pac:

Have/do you ever post under different names a la Lizardfudge?

    Devore,
    Eevore
    Fevore etc?

What about boards has kept you up all night - (Both good and bad.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,434 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

If someone would have told you in March 1998 that the site would end up here - with a portion of the business sold off, an ongoing legal case, hundreds of thousands of users and a small core of fulltime employees - would you have believed them? It wouldn't surprise me if a 'no' to that question is because you actually envisaged it being further down the road! :)

Is any part of you uncomfortable with the wave of professionalism that is creeping up the shore towards boards.ie (Community managers, legal support for mods, streamlined procedures, etc)? How far down this road is too far?

    Are you still playing poker?

Why did it require so much drama and noise before Adam's (Amp's) mod powers were finally clicked off and he left in peace? (understand if you have no interest in answering that question of course!)

Can you tell the fight club story on RTE? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

What is your opinion on the current defamation laws in this country?
Do you feel that we, as a nation, are being unfairly cencored by the government in regards to this law? The recent apology from RTÉ to An Taoiseach springs to mind in relation to this. Are you of the opinion that RTÉ were pressured into making that apology due to the fact that they are the national broadcaster?
Continuing on from that, is it your opinion that the users of this site are being unfairly punished due to the current laws and would you like to see those laws changed to allow people to openly criticise public figures, public representatives and businesses without fear of being sued? Whether that be on this site, in newspapers, on blogs, in letters or in any currently prohibitative form?

Or at least that the law be changed so that defamation has to be proven in court rather than the current setup where defamation has to be defended against; or even just to introduce anti-SLAPP legislation?

Actually, the fight club story's more entertaining :)

Gerry's departure - your views on it or is it too sensitive a subject to discuss?
If you could close any one forum on Boards, what would it be?
Will you be doing any more stand-up?

I'd like to hear both those answered too.
I don't know what SLAPP is though. That's filed under weekend reading, so I'll look into it tomorrow or Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

SLAPP = gits sueing for libel without merit just to shut someone up because they couldn't afford to defend against the charge in court. (More or less)

That's there to protect people from being defamed by mass media who have bigger legal budgets. But how about laws protecting publishers from comments made by non-related people. And allowing apologies to be made without conceding liability - one of the main reasons papers don't apologise until they have to.

What originally gave you the idea for SSF and did you expect it to be so successful in such a short time?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

I recall you saying in the past that if boards ever became a pay-for you would walk away. Bearing in mind the daft investment and the financial load of such a large site is there any danger of any content being subscription only (Subscribers forum aside)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,044 ✭✭✭Gaspode

Question: Boards is best known as a discussion forum, and opinions are plenty and hugely varied among its users. In the many discussions you've had on boards, has another user completely changed or reversed your opinion on anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

I reckon it might be an idea to link in with other social networking sites to give us more of an edge. A lot of the changes that came in with the big vB upgrade could be integrated with other sites a lot more. I think that would be exciting.
    From the thread in feedback.

Do you think this would be a good idea?
We can already digg, stumbleupon and google threads. Do you think it would be a good idea to link them to social networking sites?

    I do.
