I know a lot of people are on job seekers at the moment but what would you consider a big wage per week?

    Seriously?

Above 600 a week and I'd love it.

Most people here complain when their wages is below 700 a week.

A twelfth of a pittance per month would just about cover me.

A big wage for me would be one that i'd have trouble spending... don't think it exists.

I think it all depends on your life stage. At 22 and fresh out of college i got a job running a canteen as a chef manager for 1000 staff. I was paid £230 a week and thought i was rich. A year later i moved to a night shift much bigger place and was paid more but the job was tougher. I couldint understand how people had no money left by Friday.

Im paid a lot more than that now but some weeks i cringe when i get my statement :o.

Im in my job over 10 years and i know people who thinks it's a massive wage and also people who cant believe it's all i earn for all the responsibility i have and hours i work.

Look at the guy who was supposed to take over the role in Irish nationwide....when the salary dropped to €360,000 he wasint interested. Everything is relative to what you earn now.

I must be reading this wrong. You came out of college at 22, and someone hired you with no experience to manage a staff of 1000 in what must be the worlds biggest canteen, and then they only paid you 230 a week.

Then you actually found a bigger canteen somewhere - are you in the US army ? I've hired a lot of graduates, and it's usually at least a year before I'd trust them to look after their own work, never mind 1000.

Also, where the hell is this canteen that has a staff of 1000 ?

I get bout 1750 a month after tax,and every 3 months Id get an extra 1200 bonus thrown on top,and I do be still scraping it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,660 ✭✭✭veryangryman

As the other poster said, its all relative

It dont matter how much money you got - you always find stuff to do with it, be it spending, investments, property, new car etc

Its like when you give a kid 3 cool toys. Of course he'l live with these 3 comfortably. But take away 1 and he wont be impressed - will wonder how he'll survive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭Gone Drinking

It is indeed relative. I used to scrap by on less than im on now and i always used to think if i was on more, i'd be swimming in it.. but now that im on more i'm scraping by just like i used to!

Load of rollocks, thats why im going to win the lotto instead

Having only ever worked just over or minumum wage jobs for my life so far, honestly earning €400+ a week would be so good right now since i have never ever had a take home pay of €400 a week ever!

    I'd be happy with €2,000 after tax, a month:D

Considering i'm on €1666.67 before tax now, that'd be a gift

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭prendy

if were talking take home then i would say 600-700 a week.

although it depends, if i was living in the west the 500 or so i'm on now would go alot further than it does in Dublin.

hubby was earning 1,300pw after tax i was on 600 both of us have lost our jobs in the last 3 months:mad: now on a grand total of 486

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

1000/week take home could be described as good wages in the current climate i think.

I know lots of families who cannot near live on that though. They were used to maybe 1500/week in the building trade and maybe wife working too. They all then had a huge house, a couple of 4x4s, expensive holidays and even with the big wages, lots of borrowings. They are really in the **** now but they never did have any job security so borrowing for luxuries was foolish

My highest wage was 2500 a month, so about 575 a week.

On 350 a week now (in oz though, 700 dollars a week).

I was comfortable on what I was earning at home, but would have had to cut down my social life drastically for a few years if I wanted to save for a deposit. So I went travelling.

a big wage in dublin in my opinion is 45k+ but over here in the west, i think 35k+ is big.

in galway, 25k-30k is alright.. i fall in that group.

I had a ridiculous commission of eur760 after my normal wages of around 500 2 weeks ago, but was a fairly fluke week!

    anything over 28k a year

I used to get €375 a day Now I can't seem to get any work I am willing to drop down to €240 but there just isn't any money about.

Firstly you have no idea of my level of experience at that age.

    I had an amazing C.V.

The canteen was the Dunnes Canteen in Cornellscourt shopping centre. Around 1000 staff when i was there.

Then i moved to Intel the following year, do your own maths there.
Now go pick holes in someone elses story.

As for the money. When youre building your CV you care more about the position that the cash...they are taking a chance on someone young..that's why they get you cheaper.

hey if you earn a nice wadge good for you, your a chef, you worked hard unsociable hour sweaty kitchens cut's burns, working 6 days a week while being sick, most peopel have easy lives compared to that of a chef's work, which has to be said is horrible... not only do you have to work...But you have to deal with all the other od things that go on ....
While most people sit in offices scratching there hiney chefs are getting preping, gettting things done then we got go indure 5 hours of dancing with fire hot pans and stupid costimers who back kitchens up because they want a well done steak with is barbaric altho half the time they go in the **** *** ***** ;):)....

So if you eanr good money good for you ....

I earn €45,000 p.a. I dont have kids and I am living in Cavan so the money goes much further than it would if I was still living in Dublin.

We talking pre or post-tax wages per week, that's important.

It also depends on what you're doing with your life. A single man/woman living in rented digs for 700EUR a month needs a hellova lot less than somebody with a mortgage and three kids... Yet, the person with the mortgage and three kids can somehow survive on the same wage as the younger person living a free life... Funny how that works.

By the deloite tax calculator for 2009, the average 33k a year wage brings in a little under 540EUR a week after tax. Not bad at all to have 2,300 a month into your hand.

Also, if you consider that that's just under the 41% band - to earn 3,300EUR a month (a thousand more into your hand) you'd have to be earning somewhere around 55k a year - or 22,000EUR more for 1k a month into your hand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,203 ✭✭✭partyguinness

TBH I would be earning around the €65k if Iwas in Dublin but sure most of that will go on tax and higher cost of living..

Unless, despite popular believe, most of those families with mortgages took out their mortgages more than 6,7,8 years ago.
