EirText 2.0 App for free SMS's (when in wireless cover)
    Facebook App.
Apple Remote (for controlling itunes via wireless, great with a pair of wireless headphones hooked upto PC,down in kitchen flicking through songs upstairs!)
WunderRadio (for worldwide radio stations inc. Ireland.)
NewsStand (For reading RSS feeds, great little app)

What I want is a standalone offline GPS mapping software for Ireland and EU, come on TomTom!!

If you're using an iPhone, it will also work on EDGE / 3G, not just WiFi :)

I love Stanza. Its an ebook reader, its a lifesaver for bus journeys, waiting rooms, plane journeys etc. Also a big fan of Sudoku Lite (I think that's what its called...)

    iPint!

Sudoku lite is good, I use Free RSS Reader a lot. Files lite is great for using it as a hard drive to store files.

I wish someone would make a version of this that can be accessed without Wifi (i.e via plugging it in)

SBSettings all the way, access to all the important controls in any application. It's also very customisable.

I downloaded the Camera Genius app yesterday. Does a few things to the camera to improve it's complete crapness...

    - You can make the whole viewscreen clickable so it's much easier to actually take a picture.
    - It has a shake function on it that waits until the camera is steady before the shutter goes. Not much use for action shots but great for when you just want a pic of something stationary.
    - Has a timer function too though I envisage difficulties propping it up to get in front of it!

There's probably cheaper (or free) ones out there too - but worth getting something similar to improve the camera.

Skype is now my favourite (apart from Jelly SMS of course). Calling over O2 3G network works - No wifi needed! (using iPhone 3.0)

Just downloaded Backgrounder and it's the dogs proverbials.

I'm posting this, while listening to 2fm via Wunderadio. As it's name suggests, it sends applications into the background.

My faves on mine would be :
    Backgrounder - Mmmmmm background tasks
Terminal - For the geek in me

    hClipboard - Copy & Paste :)
    Touchgrind - Skating fun
FTPOnTheGo - Pretty much explains itself
Kickscreen - Upcoming & Recently released Movies & DVD info and trailers

Hold down the home button until you see the message dialog. Fairly easy to use and works well.

BiteSMS is my fave. I send alot of international texts so this saves me a fortune, all texts worldwide are 6c.

TD, what other Irish stations does Wunderadio have? Better than VisuaRadio? (used to be AllRadio...)

    Pretty much all of them.

It has most of the Dublin stations, apart from 98FM (not really a loss, in fairness :)), plus a lot of regional stations.

VisualRadio is tripe in comparison - Wunderadio actually lasts more than 3 minutes without crashing, and, get this, it keeps playing a station when there is less than five bars of signal. Crazy.

For the first time today, I listened to Today FM for over an hour between home and work.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Cool. To be fair to AllRadio it usually serves me well. Though some improved stability would be great. Methinks Wunderadio will be loaded!

Can anyone tell me a Radio app that gets BBC Radio 4? I can't find one, nor can I stream the audio from the BBC website.

    You'd have my eternal gratitude!

I'll avoid mentioning apps that have been already mentioned:

FlightControl - simple yet addictive game
Trailers - watch movie trailers, very handy and cool
Shazam - awesome app. play a bit of a song you dont know the name of and it will tell you what it is. I think you can hum the tune if you are stuck too.

    All from the Appstore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

Actually, I think it would be a good idea if people pointed out where they got the application they are recommending, i.e. App Store, Cydia, that other one.

It's still a bit unstable - nowhere near as bad as when released - but it's a great title for the platform. As you say, it can be a bit of a pain sometimes with the roads, zoning etc. but it's a great representation of Simcity3000. It's not the full version but it's close enough for bite sized gaming.

Love Wolfenstein 3d at the moment, but a huge factor in that would be nostalgia for me - used to pretend to be sick in primary school to get days off to play it.

Just tried this and I have to say it is one of the most incredible pieces of software I have ever come across.

I am mad into music, and it bugs the livin' bejaney out of me when I hear a song and I don't catch the name/artist.

    This is just amazing. :D

It's actually better than amazing :D

I was at a gig a few months back, band hadn't started yet and there was music playing over the speakers. Was fairly noisy there with the crowd but the app still got me the name of the song!

How does WunderRadio work (it seems to get the BBC stations, by the way, as well as all the RTE DAB stations as well as the usual ones like Raidió na Gaeltachta)?

Is it wifi only or does it download a stream if you're out? If the latter, is it heavy on the oul' megabytes?

By the way - favourite app: Truphone, which allows you to call Japan or Australiar or wherever you like for free if you're on wifi, or for the price of a local call if you're outside (in Ireland) and it accesses 3G. Hellish laggy, though - I'm hoping Skype will work better when v3 of the iPhone OS comes out in June, as promised.

I just Jailbreaked my Touch and I am amazed at the usefull Apps:
Backgrounder-Allows Apps to run in the Background, handy for listening to the radio and surfing the web at the same time.

SBSettings-Swipe the top of the screen and it allows you to turn on/off WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G etc. without going to Settings.

Winterboard-Allows you to put your own picture and videos in the background.

iMobileCinema-A Flash Plug-In for Safari but it didn't really work for me.

And there are a few Copy and Paste Apps too.

Tom, I got Last.fm working as per your advice but I'm having major hassle with it - I literally can't play anything, whenever I click a station it says 'not enough content to play station'. I looked it up and it seems to be a common enough problem. Might have to set up yet another account, this time American, to get Pandora :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 909 ✭✭✭mobius42

Unlike Last.fm, Pandora filter by IP geolocation. You won't be able to use the app without using a VPN connection. Try this one:http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/

Wunderadio works on any network connection. I'm on a 1st gen iPhone and listen to it on the train, so it works fine on EDGE. I'm also on the Meteor 250Mb data package and have never once gone anywhere near my monthly allowance. And that's with both surfing and streaming. Just be sure to pick a low bandwidth stream (i.e. not the 128kbps stream :))

That's a pity. I've encountered that the odd time, all right, but not to the extent you are experiencing. Are you playing over WiFi or 3G?

I've only played it over WiFi so far. It's a real shame, because I've been using it on my desktop and it's a great program.

It's remarkable you're not having the same problems, just looking through a thread on the website and it seems to have become a universal thing. One of the support staff said it's down to contractual issues (apparently there are different laws for mobile content).

Actually, you know what? I haven't used Last.FM for a few weeks, I'll try it today.
