Hurling - what would you include in a personal fitness/diet regime?

First time in this forum and it is very interesting. Bit of an education in fact, particularly on the gym and diet front.. As a matter of interest, would anyone know how best to structure personal exercise (as opposed to team sessions) and diet for hurling?

regards the diet, are you trying to lose weight for hurling?

I hadn't thought about it like that, but I could do with shifting half a stone if I'm honest. I'm 5' 11" and 12 st 11 or so at the moment. I used to run at a stone less once upon a time so I know I could lose a few pounds at least.. I'm not thinking about adding gratuitous bulk per se anyway.. :)

I suppose in a sentence, I was thinking optimum diet and relevant gym work (wrist strength being an obvious one)..

Optimum diet is same as for everyone else I guess, although you should get in plenty of low-moderate GI carbs in the hours before your workouts, esp the team workouts.

For wrist strength and general strength have you thought about Olympic lifting? I'm thinking power cleans in particular - oly lifting is explosive and fast which would have good crossover to your hurling - stooping down and flicking the sliotar and lashing it. Other than that you won't go far wrong building up your strength with the compound lifts - squats, deadlifts, bench press rows....

Your weight doesn't sound too bad for your height. Do you have a belly? I am nearly 14 stone at 5'9" but still have a flat and defined belly so don't forget you could maintain weight and still lose fat through lifting weights.

Ah that weight is grand for your height.Since hurling is basically a fitness game I'd focus on shuttle runs, hill sprints, or just cycling and jogging. If that's in check as far as weights,I'd start on compound movements like overhead press, squat and deadlift. The deadlift seems to work the forearms amply but It's no harm making your own wrist roller{google it}and picking it up every so often.

As far as diet, lean cuts of meat, green vegetables etc.Try to cook your own food as much as feasible over eating fast-food.It's all stuff you probably know yourself just implement it. :)

A wee one, nothing too hectic but I'd like to shift it.

Yes, most weeks I'd get out for a canter, on a couple of mornings

Very interesting, came across a promo for it on google(http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2342308564343471257)

Easily made, and looks very useful

Not too bad on that front - generally have porridge in the morning (I like it which isn't everyone's taste!) or I'd have a bowl of the Flahavan's Hi8 stuff. Fair amount of vedge and normally either home cooked chicken, fish or pasta/nnodles with egg, tomatoe and cheese through it. I should probably go easy on the cheese though, that and butter can be a particular weakness of mine:)
