India's Tata Motors will launch its extra-cheap 10 feet (3 metres) long Nano car in Mumbai on Monday, selling for 100,000 rupees or $1,979 (£1,366) OR 1449euro
It will enable poorer citizens in developing countries to move to four wheels for the first time.
The four-door five-seater car has a 33bhp, 624cc engine at the rear. It has no airbags, air conditioning, radio, or power steering.

I remember once hearing someone explain that the difference between a Lada and a Ferrari was nothing compared to the difference between a car and no car.;)

And more than likely arrive at my destination quicker/safer/faster/looking better/richer;)

At last, an affordable beginners car:D oh no, wait i forgot about the vat and vrt, it'll probably be cheaper to walk..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,405 ✭✭✭Dartz

If they sold it here.... nobody would fit in it.

Sure, two average Irish passengers would weigh half as much again as the car itself. And a 900 kg mass being shifted by 33bhp... good luck not getting run over by a Land Rover.

And sure, when your crash it, there's not much to crumple up before it cracks like an egg. And you know what happens to the stuff inside an egg when it gets cracked. I'd feel safer on a motorbike, truth be told.

But then again, I'm 6 three, and not exactly slim.

Surely 5 seater is pushing it? The back cant be wide enough for 3.

Anan1 has a point. It's not that long ago that most families in this country did not own a car - although most of us aren't old enough to remember.

It sure is a 5 seater if this is a 4 seater:

hats the same price as a 50cc scooter, which is probably built to a price aswell.....

doesnt bode well for a car that costs the same.

It should never go on sale here. It'd be fine if all there was on the roads was these but you wouldnt have a hope in a crash with a real car.

It never will, don't worry about it. It doesn't comply with EU safety regulations or minimum standard equipment levels.

But if I were that man on the moped, my aspiration would be to buy my family a Nano car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,339 ✭✭✭congo_90

Super strong glue keeps the car together instead of traditional welding techniques,
    linky

so... we've reached the stage where ya can glue a car together and slap a price tag on it.. nice! *buys tub of superglue and spoiler*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Considering the avarage wage in india is $1 per day it will take many years for them to buy it. Thats not even considering food, water, rent, medicine ect ect. I rekon it will sell poorly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,473 ✭✭✭robtri

this car is ugly and crap in so many ways to us.....
but like it or not it is a fantastic achievement by Tata to produce a car aimed and the very poor masses for so little money.......
    I think its great....

sure all super car manufacturers have been using glue for a while now....
albeit a bit strong I would imagine but glue all the same... "carbon fibre panels" made with epoxy , which is a glue....

    Ho, ho, ho indeed...

You have to consider the fact that it will cost approx the equivelant of €1500 and replace a moped as the transport-of-choice for many Indians. It's also less-polluting (in terms of CO2 output at least) than the average Indian-built motor cycle.

Well most Renaults aren't built-to-a-(low) price and they're a pile of *****. It's probably safer and more reliable than a MkII Laguna. At least the occupants won't get barbequed;)...

According to the Sunday Times there will in time be an (upgraded) Euro version. NCAP will be 3 or maybe 4 stars...

It will cost a small fraction of what the over-rated fashion-trinket that is the Toyota iQ will cost. I think it's a considerable achievement all-in-all...

if its anything like the tata jeep imported some years ago include in the price one large horse and its up keep to tow it the tree huggers will be happy with you too you can hang a bag under its tail and use the manure for your window boxes and house plants real saveing in this time of recession

    Plastic Jags, nice... :D

I don't think Tata built Nano to sell it here. Whats the point commenting on its aesthetics and safety features based on what you are used to around here?

Looks like they know their target market, and no other car manufacturer has bothered to or capable of tuning into that market. And oh, Tata also owns Jaguar and Landrover, so its not like they are still trying to figure out how to light fire or anything...! :D

They're already in charge: they bought Jag/Land Rover from Ford, who can't afford to run Jag anymore.

    Tata can.

Tata are looking for some share of the 7 or so million motorbikes sold in India. 7 million a year..!!!

The issue with this car is that the dealerships will have no issue in selling it to anybody regardless of where they live.

I have a guy out near me with a Smart Car which is hardly suitable for the back country roads and also a PUG 1007 which are city cars. This will be on the back roads of this country holding everybody up causing people to overtake and cause accidents.

Oh yeah and old people as well.

Your arrogance is astounding. It was never designed to go on sale to the western market. It was designed and built for people who are extremely poor and who up until it went on sale took their whole families out on a motorbike.

More ignorance than arrogance... Apart from the potential financial rewards there's a huge social dimension to getting families off scooters/motorbikes and into a car. Maybe not a car that we would be contented with in the West but it's better than the alternative and a stepping stone for the moment. If Tata can get the implementation right, good on them...

And yes thay own Jag and LR so they're obviously doing something right...

apparently this thing is coming to europe, the company is working on a higher spec model to meet european safety standards with abs, airbags, and an electronic stability program, but because its heavier it will be getting a three cylinder petrol with 98g/km co2 and 67mpg,they expect it to cost 4800euro and it wont be here till 2011

    info from yesterdays ingear magazine,
and the indian one looks like a death trap, according to the stats in ingear it can do 65mph,0-60 is 35seconds:eek:

edit:european car info added by pburns

Ignorance? Arrogance? I know that will never see Irish soil, or any European soil for that matter. As far as Irish standards are, that is a piece of ****, no denying it. It doesn't have any features, completely underspecced and under powered for Irish roads, and by the time it gets over here, with vrt and tax and what ever else, it wouldn't become economically viable to buy over anything else in it's market, ie. a scooter. I see very little scooters on Irish roads anyway, so I can't imagine this would sell at all. Also the fact that it can't reach any speeds, and will still be stuck in traffic like anything else and you will more than likely be killed in any crash over 15mph. This is an forum, and I was giving my opinion as if it were ever to come into the Irish market, which it won't.

As far as the benifits it brings to the poor of India, well, they seem to come in abudance. Something that has a roof, that has five seats and that is safer than carrying your family on the back of a scooter and that is some what affordable compared to any other car over there. Well then, clearly there is a market for it over there, and who knows, it might just get families off motorbikes. Saying that, and as said above, they earn so little that they still will find it hard to be able to afford it.

Ignorance? Arrogance? Give me a break.

I agree with LM too. It more than likely will be a pile of puppy sh*te. And i wouldnt fancy getting into a smack with something else.

Lay of it lads, does everything in here have to end up in an argument? He expressed his opinion, and i dont think he's too far off the mark.

65 mph was the top speed mentioned in the Sunday Times review of it yesterday.

It takes 35.1 seconds to reach 60 mph :)

Lads you missing a point here i think. Situation in india and here is totally different. You wouldnt drive it on these roads, but for india roads its actually perfect.

I think its grand little yoke for money you pay. But i wouldnt be interested of owning it in ireland...
