So the teachers are going on strike on the 30th, We are having our french orals around that time, actually there starting that day. Would anything major happen if they couldnt go ahead, or would they just easilt postpone them.

We will obviously have to repeat or Leaving Cert:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Strike action March 30th and Oral Examinations

All three teacher unions have voted in ballots of members for up to two days industrial action in opposition to the government's unfair and inequitable handling of the economic crisis.

March 30th has been designated as a co-ordinated day of strike action for all unions including the ASTI, TUI and INTO. If the strike goes ahead - and a final decision on that will be taken over the next few days - oral examinations scheduled for March 30th will be held on another day that week.
Parents and pupils can be assured that the examinations will be conducted in the usual professional and objective manner by the qualified teachers employed by the State Examinations Commission.

Further information in relation to a work-to-rule, non cooperation and withdrawal from various initiatives will be sent to members when this is finalised with the other unions.

Please consult the ASTI website www.asti.ie for developments.

Now while it says nothing for absolute definite, all other (Public) unions are striking that day, so I dont think that the teachers would go against that.

Hey I did my Leaving cert in 2001...the year of the strikes. We all managed that year, so dont worry your pretty little heads folks, theres always ways and means to get around these things. My orals were postponed too. If the strike goes ahead, it just means the exams are postponed until later in the week.

Not much more more than mine. Either way not much to worry about.

Woohoo! An extra day to study for the Orals so! Badly needed!

Good to see the unions protesting against the cutbacks, some of them are crazy and now they're re-introducing Third Level fees which will affect all current Leaving Cert students from 2010 or their second year. Students should go out and protest with the teachers.

I'd bet anything that no teachers will strike down here!..But sure I'm in T.Y so who cares!!:pac:

Hmmm...think lecturers in UCD are striking that day too. Annoying, cos means we'll be two weeks behind project(Easter Monday too), and then have a tutorial that'l account towards 10% of final mark, which the program for that is all over the place cos of the tutor already missed days. So with 5 weeks let, everything will become incredibly messy...woohoo!

In saying that, extra day to get all work done.

I think theyre supposed to strike if theyre a member of a union. My french teacher said something to that effect.

Striking on the day of my Irish orals, teacher told me that it could end up being rescheduled to Saturday as there is no way they could accommodate us on any of the other days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

So now if the oral examiners ask us what we think of the strikes we'll have to bite our pretty little lips and grit our pretty little teeth and say we completely agree with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,555 ✭✭✭Ave Sodalis

Yeay.!! Strikes.! I hate Mondays. Classes are ****e and the teachers are grumpy. They should stike every monday to...um...prove the point that they can.!:D

Oh the urge to tell them that they are wasting my time and others by striking and thus causing unneeded stress to said students.

Because no one wants their oral to be up in the air. We haven't been told what will happen if they strike or what they intend to do to those who orals take place on the 30th. These fecking teachers know well that orals take place that day but yet they feel that it's in their interest that striking would be better then providing their sole purpose further students through the secondary school system. F*cking disgrace and i have zero sympathy for them.

Its not up in the air, you'll know what day its on next week. I only found out what day my French oral is on (The one thats next week) yesterday.
You dont seem to get that its a national strike, so everyone's gonna be striking, and fingers would be pointed at the teachers if they didnt get involved.

And it doesn't strike you as irresponsible for the teachers union to agree with the other major public unions to strike on a day where they fully know state examinations take place? Do you agree with this?

I really dont care, its another day to study for me, I'll go with the flow and not get bogged down with things that really dont matter.

Order of examination should be up by now, so you can judge from that when abouts you'll be. If you're in the first 15 numbers you're guarenteed the first day anyway..

As for the strike - There's no bloody reason as to why all of us shouldn't get out and protest too. It's not like we're going to be missing school to do it, cos there's nobody going to be in the schools...

Get to voice our opinions on College fees, etc etc. It's not like other people are going to stand up for us...

Except the strike is over the pension levy and the non-payment of the wage agreement. Primary and secondary teachers don't give a crap about college. Neither do any of the other unions on strike. If you wanted to voice your opinion there have been plenty of protests over fees. I don't think the strike will really disrupt students though. Our school haven't found out what day our oral is on so it's not like it'll affect anyone.

It's to get the maximum amount of attention, which is clearly working. I'm betting you wouldn't be this annoyed if it was on a normal school day?

Besides, worst thing to happen is you get an extra day for studying. It's not as if your oral would be any earlier because of the strike so no real harm done.

    20th March, 2009

All ASTI members, as endorsed in a ballot of members, are directed:

    1. To withdraw their services from second-level schools and colleges on Monday, March 30th, 2009.

Think its pretty much official now.

Loads of the teachers in my school are against this strike. Still have to do it tho they're not gonna cross a picket line now are they. Orals got pushed to the 31st. Extra day of study. Don't understand why people moan about the strike. They're well within their right to strike and we get a day off to study/catchup. Bit of a lie in. What's the problem with that?

Edit: Jus want to point out that teachers didn't neccaserily (somebody spell that word for me plz) vote to strike, the unions voted themselves. The teachers basically have to go along with it so don't moan at them.

Fair few of my teachers are the same, some are tempted to resign from the union (TUI anyway, as it seems to do absolutely nothing) but wont because of potential future consequences (I dont know what they are, before you ask me). Again, I dont mind them striking at all, kinda glad tbh, means I get 3 full days to study rather than 2.
