Ok I thought this might be a good place for people to discuss the various injuries they have or have had.

I tried to go running last night but had to stop after 5 mins because my shins became really really painful and I'm not sure why....I also got a bit of a stitch / cramp (is there a difference between the two) ?

Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No-one has any ideas about the cause of sore shins? :(

Theres a lot of causes for sore shins. Just saying their sore doesnt mean much on its own. Could even be something as simple as you were running on a harder surface than your used to.
And your stitch or cramp usually has too causes, not leaving enough time for your body to digest your food or else you were pushing yourself too hard and your body made you stop.

I run about 25 miles a week on tarmac. Some weeks about 35 but never less than 25, and I have never experienced sore shins or anything like it.

I also plan to increase the amount I run weekly.

I have a great pair of Asics gel series but wonder is it only a matter of time before I feel the strain? Am I at greater risk later in life to knee and ankle/shin pain?

Well its impossible to answer that question really, but i would say you would be at a greater risk of knee pain especially. Yet the same goes for anyone who regularly partakes in physical activity for more that 30mins at a go. But the potential gains from physical activity far outweigh the potential risks.
From my own point of view ive spent years running on grass only, recently when comng back from injury i started running on roads and found i had to stop sooner than when running on grass. As such i only run on grass.
Yet proper runners and maybe some supplements such as glucosamine or fish oils would reduce the risk of joint pain.......went all around the world for fun there
