Hi Folks - anybody based Dublin doing this?
Anybody driving down, on the morning?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Caroline_ie

    I like that bit:
**You will enjoy your chosen event far more if you are physically fit.**

Might be good training for the WW200 ... will think about it :)

Really want to do this one, but would need a lift.
Would be happy to provide petrol and bike rack to any interested carowners who plan on heading down.

Not to be missed-a fantastic event.

@ROK_on,there should be a few of us going so we will sort it out next week.

Well I have just bought my first road bike (...what was I ever doing with a mtb??) and hope to get myself a lot fitter over the summer, and was wondering if there are any other events like the Wicklow and the Mt Leinster race, that occur later on in the summer? Would give me a target to aim for etc.

I am asking here, rather than just simply googling, as I have found the cycling section of boards to be full of v. useful info. I like going on people's recommendations.

Feel like attempting either of the above three weeks after getting my the new bike would be ambitious/idiotic in the extreme.

John- three that I did last year and would certainly recommend would be the Martin Early Tour of Kildare (20/50/100km choices), the Sean Kelly Tour (50/100/160km) and the Ring of Kerry. The latter there is only the single 180km choice but it is pretty flat. All very well organised events.

I'd really like to do this because emty couldn't say enough good things about it last year.

Are people planning on doing this as a day trip or would it involve an overnight?

I am hoping for a day trip depending on travel arrangements.

I am learning to drive at present and maybe able to take 4 people plus bikes. But would (a) need a licensed driver with me, (b) need premission from the missus to take her car, (c) need patience and understanding that my driving is at a very embryonic stage. (However, I would be leaving early, so quiet roads).

My preferred option would be to hitch a lift and repay the kindnedd in covering the cost of petrol and jellies.

+1 one, I'd need a lift down, but would be happy to travel with ROK_ON if there's room in his automobile :)

I will more then likely be doing this.I have may have room for a few (maybe 4 peolple but bike rack only takes 3 bikes am planning to get a 4 bike rack but not sure when). Will let you know when I know.It will be a day trip with a very early start.

I have only ridden around Mt. Leinster but not over it.Map my ride doesnt give much away in terms of grad ie doesnt seem to bad gradient wise. What exactly is it like. From what I have seen on youtube seems very open and exposed.

I've approached it from one side only. Steep at the start, levels off, small downhill, then steady uphill for a while but not steep. Crater filled descent. That was from last years Carlow Humpy Hundred. It's the only time I've done it. I think we might have missed out on one of the steepest sections.

Hi could be up for this - need to check 'social diary'. If I am, will have car options and could take some bodies - even have a rack for 3 (assuming it still works after last borrow, eh Tiny?!).

I like how I get the blame for all this, not the eejit who decided to buy us new bikes! :)

Can I provisionally put myself in your car if ROK_ON's falls through?

I will be there too, will drive down in the morning. Just checked the route and and it's faily straight forwards. 134 KM from my place.

    My car is full.

... i will never put my bike on a rack ever again

The descent was particularily bad for that event. Heavy rain last summer(?) caused part of the road to literaly fall apart. Luckily the visit of the Tour of Ireland over the mountain in August saw large sections of the descent given a lovely smooth covering of new tarmac.

Been over it two or three times in the last few weeks and the surface on the descent is fine. Just saw one or two potholes worth marking. Was there this morning and it was very windy on the top and the cross winds will be something to watch out for on the exposed parts if its windy on the day.

Let me know if your driving and I'll reserve you a good parking spot.....quite a distance from where my car will be........!

Oh yes, I did hear that it was resurfaced. I should have mentioned that. It was mental in the Humpy Hundred. I didn't know a road could ripple like that!

Yo, could probably get the car for this, although "my" car is currently being used by my brother seeing as I gave up 4 wheels for the much better 2.

@ROK ON & Tiny and anyone else: If I can get a car for the day you are more than welcome to a lift. I have a rack and all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 230 ✭✭Cadex

Oh hey don't get me wrong - the rack was the least consideration when you guys had that happen, it could have been really serious and thankfully wasn't - in that you all walked away. However, I must check that it is OK (properly) before I offer too many lifts. To be honest, it looked fine, but will check at weekend.
Enjoyed the Duathlon tonight and met Madhatter there - the man was 20secs ahead of me - damn!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

Missed this, yeah I reckon I'd be interested too. Haven't been keeping up and doing enough distance for the w200

edit - I'll need to scab a lift as well.. Err.. from Naas. Although I might be able to get up to town and stay in my brothers place in Dundrum the night before

Ah it was all good mate, and then you spoil it by letting out that you did a duathlon.... shame on you sir, shame on you :)

Ah well - it's healthy to have more than one interest. Will confess that I can't say I won't do it again...Next week hope to do another SwordsCC race (to make up for it?).

This is the diary entry for it:

No sure. Long range weather saying that we are in for a very bad few days with lots of rain and wind. They are predicting that it will land later in the week - they just dont know when.

I am taking all this poor weather as a precursor to a great summer (opposite of 2008 and 2007).

Just wanted to say i did this last year, a really well organised event with one of the best food stops you will come across, homeade Brack with a 2 inch layer of butter, ummmh. It will get you into great shape for the Mick Byrne 200 the following week, which is where i first came across the Diesel engine Blorg and his ubiquitous Sandals flying past me.IMO the Mick Byrne is tougher than the Wicklow, also very well organised with a few very well appointed food stops,i think Sorrento Cycling Club put it on,deffo check it out.

Right, this is a bit mad but my folks are away until friday so I may have a very late answer on whether I can drive or not. If ROK ON gets a car though I can be his licensed driver.

Also, my rack is pretty crap, it takes 3 bikes but the last time I put 2 bikes on it they ended up getting very badly scuffed. If I do drive and one of my passengers has a better rack, let me know! Failing that, bring some bubble wrap or rags for your bike.

@Gav: I can take you if we can find a 4 bike rack.

Free house, PARTY. (I wish I was 15 all over again).
Not sure what your insurance is like, but would you be willing to drive my missuses car (Renault something or other).
If so, we could take 4. 3 bikes on the rack and one in the boot (it is a pretty big boot).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Yeah I have my own policy, can only drive other people's cars 3rd party. My mum might give me her car, I'll let you know, hopefully by thursday.

I'll be heading to this one, Can't help anyone heading from Dublin, as i'll be bolting up from Waterford. Trying to get a few club members from Sportif Waterford CC, they think i'm crazy to do this event. But they said that about the Tracie Lawlor event awhile ago and that turned out good. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Hope to see a few of your jerseys there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

    I'll be doing it.

I will be doing both the Mount Leinster (in the company of DrGroove and Mrs Rottenhat) and the Mick Byrne...will put up a separate thread for the latter in a few days.

Actually, I might renege on this and go for some MTB action with my MAD chums. I need to skill up for MTB races.

bummer. I hate fast descents in the rain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

    Yeah, could be tricky alright.

If anyone is still stuck for a lift, I have 2 spaces just opened up (assuming the bike rack fits the car, which I won't know until tomorrow morning!).

PM me if you are interested.
