I need a new radio and it looks like wi-fi radios are pretty cool. Is it possible to use a wi-fi radio with mobile broadband or do you need a wireless router? Non-techy answers please!

The non techy answer is, no.

Mobile broadband, although is wireless, is nothing to do with Wifi, so you would need a Wifi router. It is possible that you could share the connection and use your computers Wifi card to set up an ad-hoc connection, but I'm not sure this would work. Probably depends on the Wifi radio, and even then there have been several reports of how dodgy connection sharing is with mobile broadband.

I agree - Wi-fi radio is really cool! You need very stable Internet connection to use it, however. My mobile phone has Wi-Fi built in, and I have a Wi-Fi radio application running on it. When I am at home, it is rock-solid-reliable on my eircom Netopia Wi-Fi router & DSL line. However, when I am abroad staying in hotels, it often does not work reliably. Presumably, some hotels tend to have all the rooms sharing one DSL line, so there is too much contention. I expect the performance on Mobile Midband would also be unreliable - plus the fact that you would need a Wi-Fi router as has been pointed out.

By the way, if you are looking for good value in a radio, I can recommend the model below. It's a little bit clunky to use - particularly changing channel, but it's incredible value. I got one of the white ones for £39.99. The pink models are still available at this price, if you don't have a problem with the colour! This is way cheaper than other models that I have seen. Put the money saved towards getting yourself a decent Broadband connection.

I can recommend the radio - but not the supplier. They really aren't set up to selling into "Eire" properly. If you can possibly get this delivered to UK or NI, I would strongly recommend it. Alternatively, if you can get someone with a UK credit card to pay for it, that might make the purchase easier.

Check out the sticky thread in this forum.

It has recommendations for Wireless Routers that take a 3g usb dongle (allows you to share your 3g over wifi).

This should allow you to use a Wifi Radio and any other Wifi devices i.e. laptop, ipod touch etc

I'd recommend either the Solwise 3g router or the dovado, haven't used either but I've told my sister to get the former, it has good reviews.
