Just goes to show that in nearly all those crashes the airbag isn't going to help much at all.

You dont see that on TV very often or ever.

I watched half of that with my head in my hands gasping at some of the impacts.. Christ.

I will choose the place I stop my car if I'm ever stopped by the Gardai.
I am going to stay the hell away from trucks, poles and walls.

I'm not sure what practical lesson I can learn for my driving mind you. Especially seeing as I'm about to become a biker in addition to a motorist. It just seems like a case of inshallah!

What sort of vehiche are you likiest to survive in? Doesn't look good if a truck is involved.

    sh it happens

Yeah well bad things continue to happen if you dont take lessons from them.

Obviously we arent going to drive everywhere at 10mph so we are left with the other options: road design, car design, driver training and education, road legislation, etc.

In this way we still get to keep our motoring culture, people get where they want in good time, and greater safety.
    "Sh1t happens" doesnt do that.

Jaysus - they should show that here instead of those mini-movies with a cat stevens backing track that we get.

Those two crushes on 2:17 and 2:19 happened in LV in 2003 and 2004. I've seen both in reality. Cars compleately destroyed but luckily no one was serious injured. The driver on red Ford Escort was claiming that he was doing 50km/h when this happened.

Interesting the amount of bikers involved in crashes there! :(

Interesting fact is that per kilometre travelled, bikers are 13 times more likely to be involved in a serious crash in Ireland!

The crashes are from all over the world - I've seen several of the videos before here on the motors forum. Some of the impacts are truly horrific. That said, most of the accidents are driver error rather than speed as far as I can tell.

Yes but they were all driving faster than walking speed, therefore speed was a factor and in fact caused all of them. Says Gay Byrne.

Oh man, if I was the biker at 3.30 I would have inserted a crow bar up that driver's ass!! What a fúcking tool.

All those crashes are horrific. But as unkel said alot of them were caused by driver error (read stupid driving). E.g. in the one from a biker camera where he went onto the wrong side of the road going around a corner and then hit someone.

I watch the road... not my speedometer.

Which is the more important thing to pay attention to? Seriously.

Who gives a **** what speed you're going, if you never see the kid chasing the football?

Well obviously the road ahead. But glancing at what speed your doing is just as important. 10kph could be the difference between you hitting the child or not. Same goes for a car pulling out etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭AugustusMaximus

The majority of those crashes were caused by incredibly stupid driving, not just speeding.

Did the Lorry at the end get rear ended to say it veered to the left all of a sudden ?

And for people who may want to know, the backing track is Rob Dougan - Clubbed to Death

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,073 ✭✭✭homer90

    shocking stuff:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,407 ✭✭✭Dartz

    So then...

35 mph and you see the kid.

    30mph and you dont?

Which leads to the better outcome? I am deadly serious. Speed is not the be all and end all of driving, despite what some people will have you think. Regardless of what speed your going, if you're not aware of the environment around your car, you're dangerous.

I'm not talking about idiots who do 100 kph in a 50 zone.... that's bloody stupid, I'm talking about the people who will stare at their spedometers running exactly at 50, just so they can be sure of avoidiong a fine from the speed camera at the end of the road..

I'm a firm believer that the road safety onus should be based on being truly aware on what's around you, not just on a number a needle on the dashboard is pointing to.

Just because you're under the speed limit, doesnt mean you're safe. Just because you've drifted over the limit, doesn't mean you're dangerous. That is what I mean.

Shocking stuff. Iv seen different presentations on crashes before, but this certinally hits home a lot more. From what I could gather, it was a mix of driver error and driver error with the driver going very fast.

Some shocking crashes. The one in the tunnel with the cops was horrific but people walked away from some of the bike crashes!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭DavidH82

Jesus, that was scary. Just shows how aware you have to be. Even if you're driving in a safe manner someone else's stupidity can get you involved in their accident.

agreed, a lot of the ones with bricks covering a section of the screen are from the US and are car chases involving the police, mostly shown on road wars etc.

A lot of the worst motorway accidents shown are speed related where a lane gets blocked and everyone from behind plows into the people at the front.

Hold on a second. If they were driving at the legal limit, and still hit the other cars, it's not speed related. It's physics and human factors.

A lot of the motorway accidents shown involve vehicles crossing the central divide. This is entirely preventable. Proper armco or concrete barriers should keep even the heaviest vehicles on their own side of the motorway.

forgot to add, 3:06.. my god he got straight up.. wft?!

i had to rewind it for that also, he shot straight up like he was hit with Styrofoam...!

that one with the hgv rigger at the end was mental, shot right thru the central barrier made mince of anything on the other motorway lane.

obviously not enough to stop a big f*** off truck..whose driver was probably asleep after driving 10,000 miles that week over 120 hours non stop driving by the looks of it

That A4 motorway in Italy is mental, inside line is packed with trucks the whole time so you have cars merging in and out at the last second meaning if you are in the second lane you have to constantly watch out for cars and trucks suddenly arriving in your lane without warning.

Im just back from a week driving there and while they may have better lane discipline than we do, the quality of the rest of their driving is very poor, driving at 130kmp a metre from the guy in front to show that he is holding you up is just stupid yet taken for granted in most of Europe.

Jesus, people really don't like bikers...

No-one said that. I think most people don't think about bikers on the road, and that's one of the problems. They're almost invisible to the average 'look-straight-ahead' driver.

Horrific crashes in that video. Italy really is an extremely dangerous country to drive in. Seatbelts only became mandatory in 2000.

Bulgaria is just as bad, but the road quality contributes to that country's problem. Even the motorway to the airport is potholed.

The Liveleak website usually has a few actual car crash footage clips on a regular basis, clips you would never see in the media.

Forget air bags... the way to make drivers slow down is to replace air bags with a sharp metal spike out of the steering wheel.
That'll slow down drivers REAL quick.

Great find, those trucks rolling like toys. spine chilling stuff. Bear in mind you need to have the strongest stomach to work in Fire/Paramedic. Imagine those fireman try to get the bodies or survivers i seen once i couldnt take it. :-(

Jesus, people really don't like bikers...

    No, people don't see bikers.

They look in their mirrors when changing lane and in full view they still don't see you. They pull out into the street in front of you after looking directly at the oncoming bike. They swerve when you are directly beside them with a day glo yellow bike and florescent jacket.

People get used to only looking and seeing cars on the road and it means as a biker you have to expect that you are invisible to other road users.

Mon Dieu that was pretty disturbing. That clip of the white van rolling from 6:07 to 6:26...my heart was in my mouth watching that van rock back and forth while the guy was underneath it.

I've lost someone very close to me in a crash and that video hammered it all home again. Watched a few crash test videos that Fifth Gear did on another recent thread and I've actually begun to feel pretty vulnerable in my car since watching them. The evolution of crash technology in the last 10-12 years is astounding and I'm in no financial position to take advantage of it.

Those advances in crash tech are infinitely more important than how many bloody polar bears my exhaust might endanger.
