.... and think "is that guy *really* president of the USA?" The country I grew up loving/respecting .... and then eventually fearing/ridiculing?

I'm mean fair play the guy but he always looks like a high-school teacher to me for some reason. Either way I hope he does a good job.

Just in my mind anyway it about the equivilant of Brian Cowan being elected Taoiseach.

Can't say I think much of the man. At least he isn't Bush, and can't possibly be as big a moron as Cowen.

    Osama-Obama

    Coincidence?

    Brian Cowen wasn't elected Taoiseach.

    Not by the electorate anyway

As opposed to a guy who looks like a redneck rodeo cowboy who's been staring directly into the sun? Who cares what Obama looks like as long as he can clean up half the mess Bush caused he'll be a step in the right direction

Why did I think this was going to be a gay male fantasy thread?

Anyway, Obama is brilliant, he's going to save the world. God bless the USA. :)

Impossible...everyone knows ALL Irish folk have red hair, freckles & wear little green outfits! Just wait until tomorrow...they will all gather in Dublin & towns all over the country.

I wonder if there's an American forum where somebody has asked "Dya ever look at Brian Cowen?"

    shouldn't fucking think so.

I imagine they felt the same way for JFK and Reagan. Like "wtf?".

Yes, how ironic. Obama comes to power and it signifies a momentous step in the fight for black civil rights in America. A few months later and black Americans are being laid off faster than you can say Martin Luther King Junior. Change?

    They're behind you!

Seriously though, I've yet to hear the fella offer anything at all of any real value. Seems to still be riding on a wave of "honestly, the policies have changed because the prez has".

He can string a sentence together so thats a start! He has a big mess to clean up after that idiot Bush. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders and I have faith in him more so than our own government!

Obama in is a a politician, not a messiah shocker!

The guy rode a wave on unbridled naiviety to the presidency. Hes a little out of his depth, and his rhetorical gifts arent as useful when there isnt a mob to be swayed. The guy could be a one term wonder.

That said, he is at least not as idealogical as his predecessor. That is both a good and a bad thing.

I've been reading that the only thing he says to his staff is "arrange another party". By account, a watchdog has begun to complain about his behaviour, especially after he dismissed Gordon Brown:

Actually I think it was first Jesus, and now the president.

Your problem is that you are seeing time the wrong way around. That's not how it works. Douglas Adams said.

to be honest, i see him more as a celebrity than a president.. i guess when when i hear him talking about a serious issue other than the economy, i'll think differently.

I think he looks very presidential

This is true, nobody has seen messiah shockers for, like, ages! The work just didn't pay anymore - after the introduction of the knowledge economy.

For the day that's in it, let's have a plastic paddy.
Any semantics will be met by the brute force of Obama's SS.

    So by the same rationale:

Cowen becomes taoiseach and more white people are being laid off faster than you can say Eamon De Valera.

I like hime very much and look very preofessional and knows a lot about his job and what he plan to do. Of course some assholes will hate him because he's black and also they can't do what he's doing. Brian and Mary should take examples of him.

    LOL
America is WAY more important to the Irish than Ireland is to Americans... in fact some Americans don't even know where Ireland is, so most Americans will never, ever even know who the Irish leader is.

On the wider scale yes but not individually. In fairness nobody really gave a f**k about the US here until the whole Obama train arrived.
While most Irish Americans I know are very passionate about Ireland and Paddy's day, dressing up and face painting. The works!
