Heart Rate

    Hi All

    Age 45,male looking to lose 1 stone (belly) & improve general fitness

    I recently completed novice to 5K programme, running 5K in 29 minutes (don't laugh) at average heart rate 156bpm.

    Also doing 100 push up programme

    Should I now

    1.Try and do this quicker

    2.Stay at same speed and go further and longer, I,m thinking of doing 8 week 10K programme

    Also If avge heart rate reduces over time doing this distance does this mean I am getting fitter or should I try and keep heart rate at 156bpm (85% of max heart rate)

    Any comments appreciated

    You seem to have a good heart rate and its important not to push too hard. I would say you should increase the distance unless you have time constraints. The lower your heart rate the fitter you are although a better measure of fitness is your recovery time. What way do you do your 100 pressups? I used a pyarmid system in the past. If you do this system it can increase your strength a little faster.

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

    The trick is not to stop, but to pause in the upright position between number changes until you cant manage any more. Then take a quick streching break and continue with as few stopages as possible. It takes less than 15 mins and if you do it 3 times a week you should be able to do the whole 100 non stop in about 4-6 weks. When you have that mastered you can move on to this one.

    2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2,
