Paid with a €20, got €49.35 in change.

Was a bit confused at first when I saw the girl counting twenties.

'Is she adding mine to the pile? Or wait...'

She takes two and goes rooting for fivers...

'Shít, she thinks I gave her 50. Should I tell her?'

She hands me the change and I leave. Should I have told her? Am I a bastard?

Or should you be thankful for any lucky chance like this?

    Was she hot?

I'd give it back. She's gonna get in a load of trouble when she cashes up. It might not be the first time she's made this mistake and her boss might get rid of her over it.

I hope you choke on your Rancheros, you bastard!

  • I always tell the person. It's not like finding money in the street, this person is responsible for balancing her till and will likely get in loads of trouble and have to pay out of their own pocket. Or even get fired.

+1. Karma is going to suck for you when you get cancer for the sake of 30 quid.

I really hope she isn't a young single mother of a very ill child who pays the rent for her entire extended family and has a particularly callous landlord.
That would just be too upsetting.

Rancheros are corn snacks not crisps

    OP

I think you should weigh it up as follows.
Are you reasonably financially secure? (Do you have a job? place to live? can you afford a reasonable lifestyle?)
If yes, then give it back
If you are poor and genuinely struggle a lot, consider it a break but spare a thought for the cashier

They will probably check the CCTV on the till so you will probably be identified.
Do you intend to avoid that shop like a thief forever?

she won't be fired she'll have to pay it back out of her own pocket

you simply stole €30 off her, it'll teach her to pay more attention on friday 13th

i would have told her but its nothing to worry about

if you want you can go back and give it to her it'll make her day

    We did this before.

The discussion will vary between people who say right on, fight da power etc., and those who point out that you may have gotten the poor girl fired.

So? If she cant count, what is she doing working a till? And if she has done it before she deserves to get fired.

Well if it's not the first time she's made that mistake she probably shouldn't be working in a cash-handling job!!!

Personally I'd keep it. No question!

Yes. But if she struggles to do basic maths, a job handling, and counting, money isn't the best place for her.

UC - She wasn't that hot. Not 'trying to impress with my honesty' hot anyway.

I don't think the shop had CCTV, and as far as I know everyone uses the same till (so hopefully they won't find out it's her). Which makes me more of a bastard for robbing a small family business. Hmm.

For anyone interested, they were crispy duck and hoisin walkers. Nothing to write home about tbh.

I think you should go back and tell her there was a mistake, that you gave her a 50 and she only gave you change for 20.
Go on, it would be a story to tell the grandkids.

Give it back, it's never too late to repent!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 467 ✭✭aoibhebree

So you've never made a mistake in your role?

Well any jobs I've had so far are bar-work/shop type jobs, and yes if I made a mistake like that and gave someone too much change I'd accept responsibility for it and pay for it out of my own pocket if necessary. I wouldn't depend on the customer to point out my mistake. Fortunately it's never happened because I can use a till and I can count!

Don't listen to these do-gooders, that money is yours now

So if you made a mistake and the customer knew you did, your advice would be for him to keep the cash? I seriously doubt that.

If I made a mistake like that, and the customer noticed and gave me back the cash, I'd obviously be delighted, it would save my ass. However I would not depend on them to do that, which is why I make a point of not making mistakes. It's really not too difficult! Mistakes like that generally happen when cashiers don't bother keying in the amount given by the customer, and instead just work out the change in their head, it's a bad habit to get into.

However I'm good with figures anyways and as I said, have never made a mistake with a customer's change. If I did, and it was a once-off, I'm pretty sure my employer would let it go. If I did it on a regular basis, I presume I'd be fired, and rightly so!

I would have giving it back. She probably would have had to pay that back out of her wages and since she works as a cashier/checkout girl she's mostly likely only earning minimum wage which isn't much. She could have been a single parent and need every penny of her wage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,130 ✭✭✭✭Kiera
