    Hi, has anyone got any great cure for somebody suffering from shin splints apart from long periods of rest. Just back in the GYM after a period of time and suffering now. Especially after 20 mins or so on the treadmill. Is there any specific runners that would help to alleviate this for me. Thanks alot.

    Are you sure you have Shin Splints?

    Just a thought but,
    I thought I had Shin Splints recently, same as yourself after about 20 min on the threadmill I would get a lot of pain around my shins and have to stop running.

    long story short went to great Physio and found out that one of the archs in my foot had collapsed, had to get special insoles for my runners and do some simple excercises, hopefully im on the mend now.

    Yes I have. I went to four physios over three years for this.
    I ended up doing my own research and getting orthodics done. Cost me 300 euro but the shin splints went away.

    Physios were all trying to heal them by doing different types of stretches.

    Basically, what happens is you get tiny little fractures in your bones from impact. When you are younger, the bone growth rate is so fast you don't notice these little fractures.

    When you're older you do.

    The amount of fractures is proportional to the amount of force and stress your shins are under. This relates to how your fit hits the ground.

    1. Cheap runners bad idea
    2. If you pronate a lot, the fractures also increase.

    My orthodics stopped me pronating and worked.

    The best years of my sporting life were ruined by Physios unfortunately.

    Theres nothing more annoying, Ive never 'cured' myself as such but Ive learned to deal with them, and theyre not nearly as bad as they used be.

    I thought rest would help, but eventually they came back to haunt me after a long rest. So heres my advice,

    I try and run on as much grass as possible, even if Im doing a run along a road or in an estate etc, ill always find the opportunity to stay on the grass when its there, even if its just for a minute or 2 it relieves the pain a bit.

    I keep my runners updated, as soon as they start getting worn I get a new pair because its the impact of your foot hitting the ground that causing the pain.

    I thoroughly warm up and stretch, i.e. 2 400m laps, I run backwards, I skip side to side in both directions, and then thoroughly stretch my calfs.

    I still need to get rid of the problem altogether though so Im going to get gait analysis when I can because cause even walking can be sore nowadays.
    The other day a few of us were throwing a ball around the carpark and within 2 mins I was limping my legs were so sore. It just goes to show the difference you can achieve from good runners, warm up, stretch and running on grass.

    No actually? What does it consist of? Seeing a physio and getting prescribed a certain size or something?

    :( I can get them just walking to work..I have/used to have a swift walk but **** me if my shins arent killing me some mornings.

    On a tredmill I will find my knee tightning up and going down my leg.

    Rest doesn't seem to help much, specially when I walk most of the way to work.

    I have had shin splints for 5 years, confirmed by a scan. Even though long periods of rest alleviate it, as soon as I start working out again, even just walking a bit fast, it comes back. I am kind of resigned to living with it permanently now. I've heard there are magnets that can help but I haven't tried them yet. Asics are good trainers, especially the gel-soled ones.

    Lads get Orthodics. All of you.
    I had shin splints for three years. Went to four different Physios.

    Ended up getting orthodics made specially for my feet. Cost 300 Euro.
    Best thing I ever did, and I wish I did it earlier.

    I have heard of people needing an operation on the shin. Basically your foot cal be grand but inside the leg\shin the thin laver of membrain that is just under the muscle doesn't expand thus putting pressue on the shin.

    Now that is probably the worst explination ever but a biddy of mine was perfect after getting the procedure. He had to get little slits in the skin membrain.

    Just something to think about.
