Awesome, anyone want to lend me a fox calibre too and I'll prove once and for all that I really can't shoot? :p

Any one know why the 22.250 is not included in this competition.

I expect the given list was token, and non-exhaustive. I'm sure you wouldn't be turned away with one. What about .243 though?

I have a beautiful Parker Hale in 22.250 Calibre it is about 45 years old, I had it rebarreled some years ago, it has a Lothar Walther barrel on it and it is extremely accurate.

I would like to see it shot in that competition if it is allowed.

Nice, I saw a great photo of a Parker-Hale 1200TX yesterday scoped on a bipod for F/TR. Struck me as a great cheap rifle to start into the game, which will still be very accurate.

anything between .22 hornet and .220 Swift namely, .22 hornet, .222 rem, .17 rem, 204 ruger, 220 swift, 223 ............... these are generally taken in hunting circles as "fox" calibres, we know that 22-250 and 243 are used but we want to restrict it to the upper limit of .223/220 swift.

There are a lot of "fox" shooters out there who dabble in target shooting this comp is mainly for them ;) 22/250 is still considered the "smallest" deer calibre allowed therefore we have decided to stick to the "old" divide between vermin/deer calibres

22 magnum/17 hmr would not really be deemed suitable on foxes to 200 yards

There are a few comps for 22lr during the year too

could shoot comp but only for score ? will have to check it out for you ;)

How about limit it to .22 and smaller centrefires? That way you don't get the likes of the .243 involved, but can allow the .22-250, which to be fair is about the same as the Swift. It'd be a fun competition in any case? What will it be? Prone, sitting/kneeling and standing at 100, 200 and 300? Might as well challenge folks. ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭bunny shooter

IWM I like your logic and I reckon it is a good idea might make it easier to "limit" calibre choice too, much the same way as we were going to use the "old" Garda division between vermin/deer calibres ;)

Leave it with me for a few days lads.

Any feedback from others appreciated !

Not to worry, my Parker Hale old as it is, is too beautiful to shoot. Does any one know if my Lothar Walther Barrel replacement would need a second lisence?

Please see thread in "Hunting" and post re 22/250 ;)

Can we keep all references to "fox" shoot there and classic shoot here ?

    pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease :D

Just back in, had a cracking day and took third with a half decent possible score. :D The trophies are gorgeous, and thanks to Mick for the shoot and the prizes.

More importantly, I pipped Sparks by two points. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Ye git. Only two points after all your practise, and you using the 6.5 while I was on the .303 and I didn't get to practise, I just went straight into the match without ever shooting a fullbore without a scope before :D

An enormous amount of fun, I have to say. I might not be able to take anything off a shelf above my head tomorrow, but it was worth it :D

Pictures look great as well btw. Will post soon.

I think bunny's gotten over the shock of having three mods (well, two mods and an ex-mod) show up to say hi unannounced :D

*cough* The amount of whinging while shooting jaycee's .308 later, it's a wonder you didn't bore the targets off their staples! :p No scope-eye this time too, well done. ;)

Agreed, many thanks to Mick and all who helped run it. Another excellent day.

I totally agree, A great day. Congrats, It Was'nt me, you shot well today. I scored a 37 and 2 V's. Sparks beat me by one point. Good shooting Sparks, hate to see what you and It was'nt me could do with a bit of prior practice on the the vintage rifles.

It was also great to see and fire other classics, such as the Martini Enfield .303, the Schmidt Rubin 7.5 and the Moisin Nagant. Judging by today, the classic scene is really gathering steam. The winner and the second place and the third place were all won by Swedish Mauser sporterised models. A great testimony to these fine rifles. still waiting on my licence for my No4 .303. Then I will train and train for the next shoot. The trophies today were really nice, Fair play to the lads for going to all the trouble of getting them made.

Seriously though, I was reluctant to leave the range in case I missed something. Sparks brought along his kit. Wow that anschutz .22 is some piece of work. Did'nt get to se the "Glock" IZH 46M. :) Would like to get a few rounds out of this before I decide which air pistol to buy!

Thanks again to Jim and the staff at Midlands for making everyone feel welcome, and thanks to Mick and all the VCRAI Committee for an excellent event.

:D That wasn't whinging, it was moaning and crying like a little girl at the pain in my shoulder :D

Aye - I won't be giving up the air rifle, but it was a barrel of monkeys.

And the 9mm pistol was fun as well :D
And those photos turned out exceptionally well, btw IWM.

*those* photos? (needs memory refreshed, had early start and has been on autopilot all day)

Everyone needs to see Sparks shooting an evil 9mm to show he's one of the gang. ;)

Thanks to the VCRAI, its members, and the generosity of the shooters of the Midlands with all their beautiful kit, here's a cross-section of what I managed to try today, possibly excepting some stuff I don't recall. (See above comment about autopilot)

    Left to right: 9mm parabellum, .223 remington, .308 winchester, 7.62x54R, 6.5x55SE, .303 British, .270 winchester

 Knew Sparks from his photos, Connor was unknown but the t-shirt gave it away in the end, know JC from Midlands and must admit I did get a shock ;) fair dues to ye :D Ye got me ;)

Fired the no 4 303 myself first time ever and loved it. have bought one and am waiting on licence. 7th round stung a bit :( fair thump of it alright. trigger is not a timmney or a jewel though .................. can't wait to get mine.

Had a CG63 Swedish Mauser, the one with the "flash" sights :pac: previously, it was there today actually ;) and must admit it is sweet to shoot compared to the 303

Thanks to Mick and all who organised shoot will be joining VCRAI as soon as I get licence sorted for 303, love the new posters too Mick.

32 shot classic comp ! more power to ye lads.

Here's Sparks shooting it on the pistol range at 25 yards. Amazing that the pellets were hitting the target reasonably reliably, even if they were going in sideways!

Pretty sure at least one of them went in backwards :D
Mind you, while they were tumbling, they were hitting where we were aiming, plus or minus a few inches. For a low-powered tractor-based airgun, that's pretty neat.

IWM shooting. That .308 has the single best trigger I've ever used of any non-match rifle. Ever. Hands down. Unfortunately, you only get to enjoy it for .25 milliseconds, and then it kicks you in the shoulder to distract you :D

Convinced to try not to shoot it like an ISSF pistol...

Actually the grouping wasn't bad at 10ish metres like that:

    IRLConor caught ejecting:

And then we tried moving back to the ISSF 25m distance:

Efforts weren't hugely successful though - group sizes were up to 8 inches across.

Nice photos Sparks, some good ones there for the ol' PR campaign.

I absolutely have to agree about jaycee's Savage. The trigger was stunning. I've seen a lot of match rifles with worse triggers. You'd go a long way and spend a lot of money to get anything half as nice. Having shot that rifle, it's gotten very tempting again all of a sudden. Put manners on me to drag it up and down a mountain all day too. :p That .223 is a gem too, and ridiculously accurate, and the 9mm was indecently good fun.

It's a nice little bit of kit allright, I was hoping to get a few more people to try it out but with all that was going on I kept getting distracted :(
