Be it a goal or a point, what is your favourite score in intercounty action?

Personally I can't pick there's been so many from Ciaran Careys point in 96 against Clare to Oisin McConvilles goal against Kerry in 02.

    Two spring to mind:

    1) Paul Flynns goal against Cork in the 2004 Munster Final for obvious reasons.

    2) A point by Dan Shanahan in the 2007 Munster Final against Limerick. Everyone will point to his 3 goals that day, but that point epitomised everything great about him at his peak. He picked up the sliothar around the 45", ran along the sideline and despite the challenge from the Limerick back, scored from the most ridiculous angle I've ever seen in my life, on his left hand side. No hurler in the country would've been able to make that shot.

From a neutral perspective, Eoin Mulligans wonder goal against Dublin a few years ago was amazing.

Eoin Quigley, Wexford v Kilkenny, 2005. Absolutely insane!!

Kevin Broderick, Galway v Kilkenny, 2001. One of the best individual scores you'll ever see.

For me, has to be all 18 points scored against the Dubs in AI final 1992:)

The Meath goal at the death to win against the Dubs in that long running saga of 1991(think thats the year). some move in lead up to it

My least favourite score would have to Maurice Fitz's sideline ball in Thurles in 2001, absolutely heartbreaking but at the same time it was a big gamble which paid off.

My most favourite score .............................. don't know about that one to be honest!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

my favourite score, in terms of sheer skill -

    fitzy v the dubs sideline.
fitzy v mayo 97, sideline, left leg off the ground.
fitzy v armagh (goal) in 2000 semi.

in terms of sheer enjoyment -

declan sullivans goal v the dubs in semi 2007.
goochs point off the right, when he dummied canty on the left, shimmied, then turned back on the right again and put over from 50 yards out in 2007 all ireland.

from before i was born -

jack o sheas goal in 81, the best football score of all time IMO.
mikey sheehys goal in 78, a defining moment in kerry gaa if there ever was one.

non kerry - careys point in 96 is perhaps the greatest score off all time in hurling.

I'd actually almost say Star's goal against Armagh - it was the tonic Kerry really needed from the player we wanted to believe was a "savior" so badly...

I'd have to think about it for a loooong time before I could come up with a definitive answer though...

    Just remembered my favourite score:

Seamus Darby's goal in the 1982 final, I was only 4 at the time but I already knew that I had to stand behind my provincial counterparts

and it meant no 5-in-a-row as well!!!!!!!!!

    Goal
Seamus Darbys goal that broke Kerry hearts in 1982!!

    Point
Graham Gerathy's point against dublin off his left foot on the endline out near the corner flag with two defenders around him. I'll never forget that point.

Was Geraghty's point in the 2005 game? He kicked some super scores that day. As a Dub, I might not be the guy's biggest fan but he has scored some beauts over the years.

Yep pretty sure it was 2005. Was in Croker, I remember having it as a clip on my phone a few years back, would watch it over and over.

Ye he had a the potential to be great but his attitude let him down somewhat.

2004 - Johnny Dooley going for goal to begin Offaly's come back against Limerick, then Pat O'Connor following up with another goal less than 60 seconds later - Amazing

Football - has to be Mulligans goal V Dublin a few years back

Yeah Geraghtys point that day was unreal.Remember it vividly watching from the Hogan stand that day.

    Goal

    1.Whelans goal against Armagh.It was a cracker.

2.Bernard Brogans goal against Laois in 2007.The kick from Jayo and the handpass lay off and the finish were top notch.

3.Canavans goal against Tyrone in 2005.Mulligan laying it off and the precision shot was amazing.

4.Geraghtys goal against Tyrone in 2007.Absolutely loved this goal.Cleverly palmed it over Devines head.Perfect timing.Well taken.

    Point

Mattie Forde against Dublin in 2005 scoring from a very tight angle from the Cusack to swing it over off the crossbar.

Stephen McDonnells point against Wexford in last years quarter final.Very tight angle and got it over off the post.

Mossy Quinns winning 45 against Laois in 2005.

Canavans winning point at the end in 2005 against Armagh.

Thought Cian Wards equalising point against us in June 2007 was well taken.Nice point but Vaughan replicated it two weeks later and made it look better.

Point: Tony Brownes sideline against Clare in 2002 All Ireland semi final
    Ciaran Carey 1996

Goal: Joe Canning against Cork last year..complete strength to hold off the rock, then buried it!

Maurice Fitz's sideline free is without doubt the finest piece of footballing skill caught on camera. And that from a Dub!!!!!

Otherwise anytime I see a score from the Dubs.

Jaysus we need an AI title lads!!!!!!!!

I think the hurlers have a better chance of delovering one :D

Anyone remember a point for Cavan in Breffni in the Ulster Championship a few years back which was given Score of the Championship by the BBC (or UTV cant remember)? Cant even remember who scored it but it was a dropping ball coming over the players' shoulder which he volleyed over the bar from about 20 yards out. I was there on the day and it was a thing of beauty. I cant find anything about it on Google and my oul brain cells are too addled to remember the details.

That seems like Cavan's equalising point against Donegal in 1992(was scored on town end of the pitch), virtually last kick of the game. It was some angle too as he was nearly on the end line too when he struck it. Was behind them goals myself that day. 3rd week of September that year was last thing on my mind that day:D

While nobody can disagree that it was a very clever goal, it's going to be forever tainted for me for the fact that it should never have been a free in the first place (Seamus Aldridge, I will forever hate you!).

Was chatting about this last night and somebody mentioned a backheeled point scored by a Clare player - Martin Daly i think

I remember seeing it, but cant remember the year

The Eoin Quigley one above beats all.

    Also, from a Waterford pov:

Ken McGrath from 100 yards against Cork in 2004.
Mullanes point early on against Tipp last year.
Eoin Kelly against Offaly last year.

Have to agree on both games, though Declan Bonners last point and the fist in celebration said it all.

    His 11 points in 95 weren't bad.

Unfortunately the point he made to draw that match was disallowed.

Can never remember if the wee man equalised that day or put us ahead.

Mulligans goal against Dublin in 05.

Withnail for Down against Kerry in 91.

Downs goal against Derry in 94, think it was Barry Breen.

    E. McEnaeneys point to draw with Kerry in 85.

    F. McGuigans 11 points for Tyrone in the Ulster Final in 84.

Brollys goal against us in the Ulster Final in 98.

McConvilles goal against Kerry in 02.

All Tyrones goals against Dublin this year.

Corks goal against Derry in the 93 final. Think Kavanagh scored but John O'Driscolls pass was sublime.

McDonalds winning point against Dublin in 06.

DJ got a goal in a leinster final against Offally; ball sent in from midfield, DJ started way across about the 21 and about ten yards in from the Hogan stand, ran into three or 4 Defenders and flicked the sliotar into the back of the net.
I remember seeing him start running and thinking goal comin up here.

Seamus Darby's goal to stop the 5inaRow

and Tommy Gill hitting the net against Antrim with the last kick of the game when I was sitting 2 rows in front of Gerry Adams

Leigh O Brien kicking a 45 to get us into an all Ireland colleges final after being told by the ref this was the last kick of the game. Good Counsel vs Flannans '95 AI semi - only about 10 yarfds from the sideline too. I always wondered why every Intercounty team didn't nail 45's on a fine day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 127 ✭✭corcaioch

Eoin Quigleys point mentioned above was something else.

For drama- Eamon McGee's for Donegal with the last kick of the game, to win by 1, four minutes into stoppage time, was special:

Brolly goal was a killer but it was the great cross field pass from that skinny McGonagle:p I always remember

Jack Sheedy's monster point to beat Meath in 1994 would be a memorable one for me (right smack bang in the middle of World Cup fever). The Hill went nuts that day as it kind of made up for 1991!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Some great scores brought up so far, but I'm still amazed that nobody has brought up Joe Kavanagh's goal v's Meath in the 1999 AIF. He got the ball at midfield ffs !!! Beautiful solo-dummy, then another sidestep/shimmy, two 1-2's and top corner.

It never ceases to amaze me that nobody ever remembers this goal. It could have something to do with the fact that Cork were down at the time and really didn't look like winning it (and they didn't) or that the goalie got an outstretched hand to it but couldn't stop it, thus slightly messing up the aesthetics of the score.

    Pure class.

As a Clareman, my two favourite goals would have to be Eamonn Taffee in the '95 All-Ireland hurling final and Martin Daly in the 1997 Munster football semi-final. Both scores, very late in the game, were the difference between Clare winning and losing those two games.

Best score outside of a Clareman without doubt was John Fenton's goal for Cork off a ground stroke from all of 50 yards into the roof of the net v Limerick in '86.

In football, it'd be hard to look past Fionán Murray's bicycle kick v Waterford about 5 or 6 years ago!

Sorry lads, but the contest is now over.

All-Ireland club semi final. It's in injury time and Cushendall are beating De La Salle by a single point. With 90 seconds remaining, DLS win a sideline cut a whole 60 metres from goal. Then, Brian "Bull" Phelan goes and achieves one of the most rediculous scores you'll ever witness.

    6:00 onwards in this video:

For both skill and importance, that'll be hard to beat.

Jimmy Keavney 1977 V Armagh. Goal after two minutes top corner. Jayo also scored a super goal v Cork in 95 semi, turned Mark O'Connor and bang. But where would ya leave Maurice Fitz. Peter Canavan got some wonderful scores also.
