The Thing got almost ruined for me, I turned it off on time.

I was watching it in HD the other day and I don't know why but I just didn't like it, you could see the special effects and that it was plastic... I much preferred watching the old SD version.

    +1

It does seem to make the CGI in some films very noticeable and poorly done.

In Terminator 2 you can make out the stunt doubles in the motorbike chase scene fairly easily now. Wouldn't say it ruins the movie though.

I was doing homework while the TV was on a couple days ago. I looked up and Sky Movies HD was on. Didn't know what the film was at first but the CGI looked so terribly done that I thought it was one of those films from the 90s...turns out it was War of the Worlds

I've a 42" HDTV that completely takes the shine off nearly all SD movies. You just see things that your not meant to see in crystal clear quality. It can be quite distracting really.

If anything that only sweetens the deal. One of the most fun games to play is spotting stunt doubles and dummies in movies...

For example. What would that be like in HD I wonder...?

    Hmmm, slightly OT...

I was in Harvey Normans the other day and they had Transformers on Blu-Ray and one of the new Phillips tvs. While the picture was amazing, as some one else said, it made the cgi really stand out and look very fake. Even the scenes with Sam running through the old building to get to the roof the camera shots were really fake looking.
    Still looked amazing though.
I have i in HD myself and think it looks great.

not quite, anytime I've looked in stores it's all Cartoons / demo videos or just normal TV signals, so I've not seen any real broadcast HD or Blue Ray

Exactly, I think some movies are just better left alone.

No way! I like to "dive" into the movies and get immersed by them and spotting mistakes is a serious immersion killer.

I've recently aquired Star Wars IV in full HD and I was shocked when I watched it. You can see every little brush stroke on R2-D2 and the Storm Troopers look super fake.

I don't think I'll watch the rest in HD, might just stick to the DVD versions of old movies from now on.

WORSE??!??!? Bloody hell, that's an achievement. I quite enjoyed the film (Smith's performance was very good I thought) but those TERRIBLE creatures? Why? What was the point of using dated CGI when you could have used people with much more effect. Didn't they see ANY zombie films?

I've always hated CGI. It looks terrible to me even in SD format. HD does make it look worse but not that much worse than DVD.

Lord of the rings....hd........try watching it if you dare. The large armies look TERRIBLE.

I don't see the "point" of HD to be honest, maybe someone can explain to me the gain. Sure, with VHS to DVD everyone could see the net benefit as it was a wholesale jump up in basic watchability. Remember those days when you would rent out a VHS only to find it unwatchable with scanlines & white noise everywhere? Or the sheer frustration of your Princess Bride tape unravelling in the player? DVD brought a nice sharp image that didn't inherenantly detract from the production itself

The only significant benefit HD brings is that you can now not only see the pores of the actors' skin, but effects work is now even more obvious, as mentioned above. Plus I don't think making m ovies more "clean" looking is to the medium's overall advantage. Rough edges always enhances the atmosphere I feel.

Besides, that's all once you get over the financial hurdle of replacing your damned TV & hardware. Sorry, but it all feels like a gigantic exercise in snake-oil selling to me. Sky1 boasting Ross Kemp in "glorious" HD does not seem like the wonderous future to me.

I can't see how anyone could say they prefer the DVD image over the HD one. If effects work is a problem in HD then companies will have to continues to improve it.

Someone could say the same about scan lines and white noise :pac:

I think there is some truth in what you say.

I think HD is the future. The picture is better than sd and effects will continue to get better and adapt but the whole "hd revolution" is nothing but a clever marketing ploy imo.

Its not revolutionary....its better picture quality. The thing is I can sit down with my 42 inch tv, good dvd player and a copy of casino royale and it looks great! sure HD might look a lot better but Im perfectly happy with my current set up and I see no reason to spend a fortune to upgrade.

Like I said someday it will be the standard and thats great. The pictures undeniably better and its progress......but all the hype is unjustified imo.

Have'n they always been in HI-DEF (at least for a long time anyway).

Put a sd resolution film on a 50 foot screen and your not going to see much:D Basquille is right though its not the same thing as seeing HD tv or a blue ray disc at home.

Its projecting through film so HD/SD doesn't apply, that is only for digital.

Yeah but isnt the reslution well up there (even higher than hd)?

Didn't realise both Lord of The Rings and the Star Wars movies were out on Blu Ray.....Do you mean upscaled SD versions on Sky HD?

To be honest I really enjoy watching movies in 1080P......It makes everything look a whole lot better imho and I for one am glad HD is here.

And fake looking plastic effects in old movies adds to the charm of it anyway....

yup, it's Quad-HD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quad_HD and when you put it beside standard 1080p HD the difference is stunning. Unfortunately you need something like 3TB per minute of footage for storage

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,241 ✭✭✭Vic Vinegar

Kung Fu Hustle on Blu-Ray kinda looks fake in the cg parts of fight scenes, I haven't seen the Matrix movies in HD yet but i figure they would be the same (fight with the hundred Agent Smiths, etc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

recently watched Jurassic Park in HD on my home cinema setup... still a great movie, but the CG T-Rex scenes look absolutely horrendous now compared to my VHS copy of this movie.

for the likes of comedies and dramas, HD is largely not needed. But for action movies, and movies with panoramas and scenes with a lot of detail it's a must.

I know Beowulf is not really liked by many, but for a technical achievement it is simply amazing when watched in 1080p. The final scene with Beowulf being absolutely stunning.

Isn't is just CGI and effects progressing? I mean looking at any effects driven film from the 80s or early 90s now and it looks terribly dated. Films being made now will have to look good on HD if they're to be taken seriously

I suppose the bottom line is, just watch films that don't need huge effects and you probably won't notice the difference

It's not just the picture though. For me half of it is the surround sound. I'm very particular about my setup & when I got BD, I was blown away by the surround sound. CGI animation is a particular favorite of mine also.

One film that really shows off great effects & sound is "Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow"

I think the sound is closer to three-quarters it to be honest.

As amazing as picture quality is, a good 5.1 setup with the opening thuds of 'Cloverfield' is just stunning.

I love me my HD. I have mine set up on a 120" screen from a HD projector and surround sound set up. I thought The Thing looked fantastic in HD. Still think the special effects hold up today, in fact I'd even go so far to say they're better than most CGI effects. I also have Escape from New York on Blu-Ray and the model work is pretty bad but it doesn't bother me, it was made in 81 after all so they suit the movie just fine.

QFT... what is it with people and not spending money on a decent sound setup. The amount of times I've been over to peoples houses, who have gone all out on a 60" Plasma screen, wallmounted it... and then either have NO surround sound set up and are using the TV's built in speakers *shudder*, or have bought some crappy €200 combo speaker set and amp/dvd player.

When budgeting for a home cinema setup, 50%+ should go towards the sound.

I also find it odd the amount of people, who have invested in a decent audio set up who don't bother to calibrate it to the room it is in. Or the amount of people who think the subwoofer should be heard like a speaker.

Rule of thumb, if you can't locate where the subwoofer is in the room by listening to it, but it is still adding depth to the sound from your speakers then it is calibrated correctly. If there is a noticeable "boom" from it that separates its sound from the other speakers, then it is configured incorrectly.

Id imagine so, it was in harvey normans. So id imagine it was upscaling. Still the difference was so bad with upscaling alone id hate to see it in true hd.

Edit, actually i think it might have been hd dvd? If it came out on hd dvd?

All I've ever seen in Blu Ray is Surf's Up and Transformers. Surfs Up was incredible, nearly to the point of me trying to reach into the bleedin TV! but Transformers...distractingly good quality. Notice I said good quality because yes, I could see that it was better quality but with years of SD viewing under my belt, rather than thinking "Wow this looks better", all I could think was that something looked wrong, out of place. I know I will of course come around to HD especially once I have a set up of my own at home but in the meantime I'm happy with DVD.

And also, the force feeding of HD upon us doesn't help. If it had been a natural progression from DVD it wouldn't be a problem but all these Blu Ray ads showing comparisons of DVD alongside HD and pretty much telling me "All that hard earned cash you spent on DVD? Pointless" just annoys the hell out of me. Had I been a bit older I probably would have felt the same about VHS to DVD but anyway. I had no problem re buying my VHS on DVD though so eventually I will more than likely be doing the same for certain DVDs.

Funny that you disliked the Terminator HD whereas a friend of mine was singing its praises to me a few weeks back. I have about 40 blu ray and the same number of HDDVDs and the difference in quality both visually and audio is impressive. Sunshine on Blu Ray is absolutlyt stunning and really shows just how good the format can be.

tbh, I don't have that many hd movies.

    2001
    Black Hawk Down
    The Departed
    Casino Royale

All top notch in HD. Full 1080p.

Have Iron Man in 720p but watched it so many times before I just haven't got round to finishing it in HD.

Have a few tv show eps in hd but for the most part cba with hd unless it's something I really really want...the matrix trilogy in hd i'd be interested in.
