Soldiers in County Antrim have come under fire during a gun attack at an Army base.

Unconfirmed reports said one person was feared dead and five others wounded, but it is not clear if they were civilians or military personnel.

Shots were fired at the Massereene Army base in Antrim, 16 miles north of Belfast, at 2140 GMT.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence described the shooting as a "drive-by" attack.

Urgh. Was listening to an interview with Hugh Orde yesterday where he said they were expecting a surge in activity from dissident republicans. I hope we're just seeing the actions of a lone nutter and not a return to the bad ole days :(

In the last few days there has been words mentioned in the media elsewhere that dissident republicans were still out there and still a danger.

Far as I'm concerned they, the dissident's can sod off!
99.9% of this country - the whole country has moved on and ONLY wants peace.
Sod off you utter murdering scum.

I apologise to the forum for the strong sentiment - it's something I feel strongly about.

It's amazing how relatively quickly I'd grown accustomed to not seeing breaking news stories represented by your thread title OP. Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come, I don't ever want to become desensitized by stories such as this again.

Does anyone here remember how the news stories a few years back had devolved into formula.

[A man or X amount of Men] were [killed wounded or a combination] in [location in the North] [Loyalist/Republican group or nobody] has claimed responsibility.

Might make a tabloid headline but somehow I cant see the peoples of both islands wanting to go back down that road ,not if they can help it.

There can be no place for British Forces in accountable, civic policing; there is no place for them in Ireland - Adams

perhaps they should be removed to avoid giving people targets

Constant coverage on sky news now for those with satellite.

If this is starting up again, you will find me - and I mean this - standing in O'Connell street holding up a sign telling the utter scumbags to drop dead and die!

My deepest sympathy to the families of those that have lost a loved one tonight and get well wishes to those injured.

    Easier that way :)

By putting special forces or the ground in N.I. ?.

While I utterly condemn the murder of anyone, and as a soldier myself I mourne the loss of a fellow soldier (even in a foreign army) but putting a special recce regt back on the ground in N.I. was always going to be a stupid, dangerous and ultimately costly move.

Like almost every one else on this forum I dread a return to 'the troubles', but I wonder have the British Establishment mis-read the Irish question again!.

You can bet your backside that cross-border co-operation between legal law forces will be at it's highest now till these murdering scumbags are found, caught and tried.

Tenner says they drove straight for the border.

Bastards - that said, it could be said that Hugh Orde kind of pre-empted something by saying "the threat is at its highest", perhaps?

They will be caught easily Id imagine.

The problem is, are there many more willing to commit similar acts?

We really are back in the Eighties in so many respects, aren't we?

I can't, thankfully, see trouble breaking out in any meaningful way up there again. As an aside, thanks to some enterprising republican bigot on Youtube, I watched one G. Adams masterfully fend off an attempted attack by Uncle Gaybo and a group of movers and shakers of the time that are now all dead or as good as. I remember watching it at the time from an anti Sinn Fein perspective-I'm pretty much the same on that score these days, and thought it, then and now, was an attempted ambush, and did more to aid the Sinn Fein party than hinder it.

At the time, 15 years ago, the media censorship on republicans had just been removed, and the ceasefire was two months old. People were just discovering what Gerry Adams sounded like.

A few things stick in my mind. Catholics/republicans/whatever, had no faith whatsoever in the RUC. There was something like a million guns up there, both legally and illegally held. Punishment beatings were rife, as factions felt they had to act as defacto police, or were just thick enough to go along with others. The tactics of what we now deem extremists, while not populist, had a great deal of support among the populace who suffered most. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world (half) blind.

Anyway, go back further again. The whole thing kicked off in the first place over inequality. Catholics had no vote in local elections.

We are not starting from such an unequal perspective today.

Well, there goes any need for Hugh Orde to come up with excuses for
re-deploying Special Forces in the North.

And it happened in a majority Unionist town. I would of thought something like this would have had happened in a republican area like most attacks by them in the past.

Just hope so called Loyalists don't respond to this and it all start a tit-for-tat war, no-one up there supports any so called 'paramilitaries' anymore, they want peace.

But at the heart of the matter there's still an occupation of the six counties, like it or lump it - brush over it all you like, but scratch the surface and thats what you'll find.

And although the people of the south voted away our constitutional claim on the six counties, it was a luxury not afforded to the nationalist population up there.

I'd truely hate to see violence returned to the streets and country side of N.I. but you can bet your life there are people on both sides choming on the bit to get going again, because the cause is still there.
