Sunday will fell bitterly cold due to the strong westerly winds. Hopefully we'll see snow fall on Sunday night.
It looks like it's going to get slightly milder on monday resulting in the showers being of rain on low ground.

    Weather Advisory
It will turn cold and windy on Saturday night and Sunday .There will be showers of hail, sleet and snow giving a covering of snow in places. This could happen anywhere but Munster, Connacht and west Ulster are most at risk.
    Valid from 18:00 Saturday 07/03/2009
    to 12:00 Monday 09/03/2009

looks like meteireann are getting their warning out early this time. always worry when they do this as usually nothing happens of any consequence when they do!

lol thanks for letting us know about the weather warnings , looks like we could get another bout of snow this weekend :D

My reading of the situation is that Saturday night will be scattered rain, sleet and snow showers but probrably very late...the early hours before the transition to Snow showers. Everywhere at risk but obviously the West and Midlands most at risk of accumulations of snow.

Then through Sunday temperatures hovering around 3 or 4C but should fall dramatically in widespread, heavy and prolonged showers so coverings of snow are likely through Sunday interspersed with quick thaws.

yeah ,maybe they are covering their bases. although, the 850 temps look favourable. another good thing is the wind should carry the showers further inland. so places that escaped last time might get something this time.

Thanks ,but tell me why does the snow thaw so quick?
Last day we had 4 inches of snow ,and i could already see some of the snow falling off the trees , is it global warming or is it just warm ground tempertures ? I miss the days where snow would last for 4 or 5 days without thaw!

the strength of the sun heats up the ground at a greater rate at this time of year.

the eagle didn't mention munster in his forecast re snow tomorrow night but just ulster and connacht...not sure if that is a good or bad thing though the weather warning does have munster as well. would it be safe to say all down the west would be at risk or is it too early to say for definite yet?

I agree with darkman2 also.looks similar to what happened tues eve and night.main front pushing through then the colder 528 air follows suit bringing those falls of sleet and snow mainly to west however stronger winds will see them move more widespread toward east.like what dm2 says it'll be very late sat night nearly sun morning before the more wintry stuff kicks in.interesting times ahead again whoo hoo:D

As this is a westerly im hoping to get more snow as there is big mountains just to the west of me :) Does that sound about right?

pink=wintry blue=rain rain and more rain

    Looking good ;)
    Today

Rain and drizzle becoming widespread and persistent across the northern half of the country this morning. Outbreaks of rain or drizzle developing elsewhere also but parts of the south and southeast staying dry until the afternoon. Widespread hill and coastal fog. Fresh to strong, southwesterly winds developing countrywide but generally mild; highest temperatures 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.

    Tonight

Rain and drizzle will clear to showers soon after dark. The showers will quickly turn wintry, with snow in western and northern counties overnight. Isolated thunderstorms will develop in the west and north also. Winds veering southwest to west will become very strong overnight, with gusts to between 70 and 100 km/hr. Becoming much colder; lowest temperatures 0 to +3 degrees Celsius but too windy for frost.

    Tomorrow

Sunday will remain very windy and cold, with sunny intervals and widespread wintry showers, giving further snow in places. The threat of isolated thunderstorms will persist also. Highest temperatures just 4 to 7 degrees Celsius.

    3 Day Outlook

It will be cold on Sunday night with some wintry showers, these more frequent in the west and north, but it will be too breezy for any frost. Breezy and milder on Monday with bright or sunny spells and scattered blustery showers, some wintry in the early morning but mainly rain showers thereafter. Fresh and gusty westerly winds will ease later in the day and afternoon temperatures reach 7 to 10 Celsius. However cloud and rain will spread from the west late in the day and on Monday night, the rain turning to sleet or snow in parts of Ulster before clearing in all areas by early Tuesday morning. Then for the rest of the week, up to and including Friday, the days will be milder with winds mainly between south and west in direction and both Wednesday and Friday will be breezy or windy days. Tuesday will be dry and bright apart from some scattered showers but cloud and outbreaks of mostly light rain will develop later in the day and overnight with mist and hill fog. Wednesday will be a humid day. Much of the morning will be dull and damp but it will become mostly dry and bright by afternoon away from western coasts and hills with some sunny spells developing in the south and east. However, northwestern areas are likely to stay misty throughout the day with more persistent and significant falls of rain and drizzle there.

The weather looks like turning very wintry from late tonight right through tomorrow.
It will feel bitter in the wind with most areas seeing lying snow esp hillier regions. By Sunday night it could well make headlines.

All gone by Monday though and the foreseeable looks mild after that so get out and enjoy what could be the Winter's last proper blast:)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

It looks very marginal tonight. Either the showers will turn to snow just after midnight or they won't - conflicting forcasts in the models. It's definately more marginal then a couple of days ago. Having said that if your lucky and it does snow there could be a good covering in places. Temperatures are not expected to reach freezing tonight so thawing of any lying snow seems likely away from higher ground. IF, and it's a big if, any snow makes it to the East it would settle quicker here then in the West.

Tomorrow looks like a selection box of weather - windy, rain, hail, sleet, snow, sun, thunder....temperatures around 3 - 4C.

not sure if munster will be affected that much by snow..seems to be more a connacht/ulster affair from meteireann. anyway maybe later will give a more detailed reading as to where will be worst affected.

with that wind there could be blizzard conditions in places:D

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

A clearance to much colder weather following this evening and for tonight with very strong Westerly winds bringing in showers of hail, sleet and snow. The showers most frequent in the North and West but could occur anywhere with a covering of snow in places by morning. Some thunderstorms likely also. Lowest temperatures 0 to +3 degrees Celsius with winds gusting 70 to 110 km/hr.

That wind is gonna get those showers well inland. It will be a nowcast. Not ruling out snow in the East tonight.

Water clouds with small droplets have large reflectance at all three channels and hence appear whitish, while snow and ice clouds appears cyan.just look at alps for example for dark cyan colour and greenland.its those speckled ice cloud showers that'll eventually bring in wintry mix. is nt the ground too wet for any snow to accumulate tonight?

higher ground is the safe assumption here but if you get good heavy passing showers, some snow will lay anywhere.its really too hard at the mo to call this one.basically a hit and miss affair again.

Oh ok ,Im not high up ,Im 35 metres above sea level.

BTW It doesnt look like any forecasts are prediciting much snow tonight?
It seems to be just a "covering" thats forecasted.

depends where the showers hit i suppose...no widespread covering i'd say but like earlier in the week some areas will be hit more than others. not that i am any expert but will just have to see what the radar is picking up later. think further up the west and north you are the better judging by the forecasts so far.

Interestingly enough temperature has risen in Galway from 9.2C to 10C over the same period. Getting quite blustery with heavy rain now. Hopefully this will turn to snow later though:D

Your name gave me the impression you where in Kerry till now. You mentioned the blue stacks and it got me thinking, they dont stretch to Dun ná gall, I used to know all the mountain ranges but obiviously forgotten most of them. Still would like the freedom of the mountains in my backyard, instead Ive got the dreaded Dublin mountains. :pac: Bring on the weather, let us feel its might. :D
