The Germans are coming....

Been alot of speculation in recent weeks that the Germans are going to bail out the Irish economy to stop the Eurozone breaking up. In todays Independent it is thought that Ireland could be on the verge of completely losing it's independence. The Germans would impose the shocking cuts that the IMF would and demand changes to our whole system of governance - including removing that thorn of Corporate Tax from their side. It may not even stop at that. If things keep deteriorating further as they are doing and the state goes bankrupt next year Germany could demand some form of political integration for it's help - we will hardly have a choice if/when it comes to that.

One positive is at least it's not the Brits.....France will be bailing them out:D

Jokes aside this is a sorry, sorry posistion to find ourselves in. :(

At least we will get some proper roads.

"The political architecture in which Ireland would find itself would be transformed. Former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald has already said the country risks losing its independence, which seems a fair description of any likely rescue package."

It's not just Ireland - they seem to be looking at all troubled states in the EU.

They give us money and impose the cutbacks the current govt havn't the balls to impose. thats a win if you ask me. The idea that they'd want some sort of enhanced political integration for this is a bit far fetched. He doesn't even qualify that statement in the artical. The indo is a pile of ****e anyway.

It's come up quite a bit in recent articles - the Independent seems to be pushing the idea strangely - but I can see if the country is on it's knees - either become Zimbabwe or take a German bailout - there will be massive conditions to any bailout. We are going to need a bailout - it's just a matter of who from. (I also have my doubts about political intergration but then again I had my doubts this economy would collapse 5 years ago).

Well if the Germans do take Ireland over they'll transform Irish Rail.

They've great experience in herding people into trains and transporting them to various locations.

I think this would be a great thing. Let the Germans come in and fix the country then in a few years we'll can get the Brits to send them packing again. Win, win as far as I can see.

Yeah Ireland is bollixed but despite what people think we're not half as bollixed as we were in the 80's and nobody took us over then even though they actually had money to bail us out then as opposed to now.

Trust me in about 2 yrs time we'll be well on the way to recovery (assuming the government do what they have said they would)

    Ah come on now Ted;)

We are much more bollixed because we have such a huge deficit. 24 billion now to be found (next month it will be 26 billion no doubt) - at least 20 billion in cuts now needed. Ireland is not getting out of this like we entered it. We are unbelievably screwed. It 's gonna take a revolution of the people to get out of this. And I just hate the people, soclialists like Jack O'Connor - "deeeee wurkers" - people are stupid. And why are all those trade unionists Karl Marx lookalikes?

Does not mean we can't have a laugh though.

Here's a good article from irishtimes.com. There is an election coming up in Germany, and a big bail out could be very unpopular with the voters.

Surely any increase in corporate tax would make our situation worse? This aside, I'd wholeheartedly support the Germans taking over.

I reported back to Berlin a while ago that Ireland is clearly vulnerable and that with regards to taking over Europe by economical and fiscal warfare - instead of the other approach that didn't work out so well - Ireland would be the perfect trial run.

So it seems our time has finally come. Guten Tag noch everyone...:D

You been silly then - the Polish (they started it!) shops sold Matjesheringe - and you can make Roggenbrot yourself. Ts! ;-) Try getting salty (proper salty!) liquorice though, or Remoulade, or Gruenkohl. Now that's a problem!

Don't care who bails this country out - just hope the Germans leave their anal buerocracy at home should they come. I didn't leave that country just to be back to square one, plus the ****ty weather.

Trains would probably run on time though. And maybe they could teach the rest of the country how to drive properly.

Does not mean we can't have a laugh though.

Just because the numbers are bigger doesn't mean we're worse off. For example a guy who makes 100 euro a week and owes 150 is worse off than a guy who makes 500 and owes 700.

In the 80's we had unemployment around 20%, top rate of tax at 60%, mass emigration, interest rates around 15% and inflation. We are nowhere near that yet. Maybe in a year or so time the unemployment might get close and some emigration will happen. But the perfect storm of constant recession is not yet here. Add in to the fact that we have made massive strides in infrastructure over the past 10 to 15 yrs and no one can say we are 80's bad yet.

We went into recession quicker but we will also prob rebound quicker as well. It part of the being a whole small open economy thing.

Btw Not a fan of the Irish brand of trade unionists myself so at least we agree on one thing.
