I'll pick Three: Deco, Anto, and Ste.

Does my head in any time I hear them.

I suppose it does...if your dyslexic!!

And jaytee is actually an abbrevation of a male given and a surname so it's exempt from discussion in this thread.

I've been on here defending my name (Shortened name) before and i'm not getting sucked into it again. I will say this, i've been all over Ireland and i've always been called Anto. I've actually found that it's not just a Dublin thing. Personally i perfer Anthony but only my mother calls me that and i don't think Anto is that bad.

I for one salute certain posters on their abilities to thinly disguise a Dub bashing thread, with such important questions.

The best example I've heard was a bloke I met in Tallaght one night after a few ales. Anto? common enough. Steo? similar. But this guy had his name entirely reduced to vowels. A-o(dunno how you would spell it tbh). His given name was Aidan, but AeeO was what he was called. Kudos:D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Because Johno is two short syllables, John is one long one.

Git for Chris...good one. We had a 'Git' or should I say 'Gitser' in our class but I didn't know for years and years that that was a North Dublin thing..anyone know the origin of that one?
Actually there are lots of other good ones .. Pato, Damo, Tayto...

    My man

As a Corkman you can't really start a thread slagging off Dub nicknames. lol

Shtella. Shtella wella way from me, girl.

However, the pikiest names I ever did hear would be 'Tonto', 'Hanno' and 'Manno'. Sorry, local phenomena.

Can anyone explain why Anthony or 'Anto' is often changed to 'Bisto'?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 45 Jamfan

Maybe that deadly Bernard Manning joke:

    Hast thou any Bista?

    Fook off, yow Spanish cuwnt

    ROFL. Ya fookin ledge!
