Euro Indoors 2009 Championship - Bronze for O' Rourke / Gillick Tripped

There is already a general indoors thread but this is specifically in relation to the Euro Indoors which begin in Turin on Friday. Here is the team and their ranking in their event.

We could have a great champs and get 3 medals. Gillick is going for an historic 3 in a row. The Frenchman Djhone isn't there but there are 2 or 3 other threats. Derval O' Rourke is in with a shout too and is only 0.04 off the fastest in the field which in hurdles is sweet FA. Mary Cullen is our other big hope having recently beaten Sonia's 3k record.

My bold (and eternally optimistic) predictions are:

    Gillick 1st
    DOR 1st
    Mary C 2nd

I think Roisin could be there or there abouts and maybe top 6 and 1 or 2 others might sneak a final spot.

    Any predictions?

    Mary Cullen 2nd
    David Gillick 2nd
    Derval O' Rourke 3rd
    Deirdre Ryan 10th
    Roisin McGettigan 12th
    Deirdre Byrne 14th
    Marian Andrews 14th
    Kelly Proper 15th
    David McCarthy 18th
    Brona Furlong 18th
    Zoe Brown 18th
    Ailis McSweeney 22nd
    Paul Hession 23rd
    Niamh Whelan 25th
    4 x 400

Gillick - 1st. It wil be tough (his hardest field to beat so far) but i think he'l do it.
DO'R - 3rd. Don't think she wil beat Onyia, field looks weak generally though.
Cullen - 2nd. If the two weaker Russians are as average as they look on paper (hard to tell with them) then she is the 2nd best athlete in the race.
Hession - won't final i don;t think. 60 is consistantly looking too short for him.

I'll be very interested to see how the younger athletes get on, Proper especially. This is a great competition to blood former talented juniors at senior level and a good environment to set PB's.

On another note, as a fan of distance running, it's very disappointing to see no Irish male in either the 1500 or 3k. We should be aiming to have guys fighting for medals in the both events at this level.

I don't about the hurdles, yes no Susanna Kallur but last year there were only 7 sub 8 and this year 4 sub so far. Granted, no standouts but still not soft. We could say the same for all events bar maybe womens High and 3k, in the mens 400 no big guns bar Wissman and Gillick. Rooney, Djhone, Borlee twins, Steele all giving it a skip. Of our other medal hopes Mary Cullen has the best quality time I feel, only 2 women last season went faster indoor or out. If she was a man the Kiernan type anoraks would be going bananas saying she is the next big time. I think she may go into the 8:30's. Anyway, lets focus on the positivity and not demeaning the medals before they even got out of the heats:D

we just had dave campbell run a very impressive 1:48.87 down in australia...he should've been preselected and allowed to run in turin, he'd have challenged for a medal in either the 800 or 1500

Thats promising, where was the race and where did he come in the race? Do you know did he want to run indoors? May not have been part of the plan.

I'm not demeaning any medal, I'm just calling the fields as i see them. I'll be giving more credit than anybody to medals won.

Derval has a real world class athlete to beat in Onyia to get Gold but after that, the field is very condensed with nobody standing out for me. I reckon it's between the Belgium and Derval to fight for silver.

If Gillick wins, this will be the most impressive of his 3 golds. For Gold 1, he had a 46.5ish main rival (Canale) and for Gold 2 he had the German (not trying to spell his name) who is a good athlete but on both occasions there was one main danger. This year, he has to beat the Italian (who has just ran a 46.02 PB) and Richard Buck who really, really impressed me in Birmingham, again running a PB. On top of that, Wissman, while not on form, still has the potential to run damn fast. When you have 3/4 athletes fighting out over 400 indoors, the race dynamic is very different to having just 1 person to focus on.

Mary Cullen has the hardest opposion to take Gold with Alimova. After that, i think she's the best athlete there (augusto is up there too though). When i refer to the Russians as being poterntially 'average', I'm talking relatively. That is, they are not capable of running of running 8.30 or quicker and therefore dominating the race between them.

I fancy Gillick to win by maybe 2 or 3 tenths. I heard he was doing some pretty impressive 300's in training and was in good nick and that was a month ago. He has gone to ground too and seems very focused, playing it all down. He also has his lucky indoor charm in The Hesh who he has roomed with on each of his last two golds!!

Aside from Wissman I don't know if any of them can go into the 45's so if he gets a clear run and stays away from a young Italian who will be running like a lunatic on his home turf I think he can go well into the 45's and win comfortably. I'd be worried if he is behind Wissman at the bell, I know he is strong as f*ck and thats how he does it indoors but he needs to have it set up at the bell. There'll be a big difference between trying to outkick the German from 2 years ago and a Wissman in shape and leading at 350m. Will be a cracker of a race.

I could be going blind or it might be a mistake, but I can't see Onyia listed on the start-lists that are posted on the special Turin website. Could someone double check?

    Derval's heat:

She beat me in a race recently. I was a bit embarrassed to lose to a girl (I didn't know anything about her at the time). Hopefully she'll break a world record or something in that heat and that will make it more acceptable :)

No Onyia listed n any heat or the full Round 1 start list. Also no gaps in the lanes (Every heat uses lane 2-8). Chances of a Derval gold just greatly increased. Probably has to be favourite now.

Ridiculous odds on Alminova in the 3000. Mary Cullen is well worth a bet at 12/1. She may have to run a new Irish record though.

I reckon 4 medals 2 Gold, 1 Silver & a Bronze. Athletes will be David Gillick, Derval O Rourke, Mary Cullen & Roisin Mc Gettigan:)

Not a bad shout to be honest. Roisin is very difficult to call. She's raced very well when she has competed this winter but we have no real 1500 form for her and abslutely no form in racing anybody else in the event.

I think McGettigan will make great strides in the 'chase this summer, and is primarily using the indoor season for a bit of speedwork over the shorter distances. She's ranked outside the top ten, so I think she'd be happy primarily to make the final and then see from there.

I'm going to be conservative and say two medals from Gillick and O' Rourke. I really can't predict the 3000m, and that's what makes it so exciting. You have Alminova, Fernandez (whose 3000m stats aren't impressive, having not broken 9 minutes, but having run 4.01 for 1500m is worth at least 8.3x in a fast race so she's lethal). Then Sidorchenkova and Augusto are 8.4x ladies at their best too, so it's going to be a bloodbath me thinks!

Would really like to see Whelan go low 7.4x. That'll set her up nicely for the summer, where she's still eligible for the Euro Juniors. Hope Kelly Proper can pull off a consistent series, and possibly go 6.5x. That's a big ask, but you never know. Zoe Brown to go 4.25 (should the increments go that way), Deirdre Byrne to go sub 9 minutes.

Great work by the women in the 400m. Two in the semi and 2 PB's.

To think that what we perceive as our 4th and 5th ranked athletes in an event can make the semis in a European Championships shows true depth coming into an event. If they keep this up and transition these times to outdoors they won't be 4th or 5th for much longer come outdoors. Great morning so far.

21.60 split so he went through fast relative to his finish time. Could be a good thing in that he is struggling for the distance or a bad thing that he is coasting in the 2nd 200m. Hopefully he is struggling for the distance.
