Extremely tough pool (well for us anyway). The team isn't great either. We could still win some silverware in the bowl though. I hope we're drawn against Georgia.:D Might be a chance for some revenge for them.

edit: It'd be great to beat Portugal or Australia too. Can't see it happening though.

Nah, portugal have a very decent sevens side, cant be written off at all. All week the team manager has been talking about the "element of surprise" our boys have over the opposition, im expecting at the very least a good performance on thursday and ill be watching Felix Jones very closely. Surprised there isnt more interest in this tournament from an irish point of view. :(

It's because the IRFU want nothing to do with it tbh.

They cared enough to put together a very competent team in the qualification for the tournament, perhaps the tournament came at a time when the provinces were unwilling to release the likes of Cave, Keatley, Earls etc. due to the six nations already putting a drain on their squads. To say the IRFU want nothing to do with it is a little much.

Its beyond me why the dont make this just academy players. There are some cracking players coming through from the under 20's,and lower ranks and they are the new breed of rugby players. Amazed at the sheer size of some of these guys, and the speed they possess is phenomenal

That's not the approach to take with sevens, every squad has a mix of experience and youth.

    Looking forward to it.

Its as "proper" a team as any other country currently fielding professional sides in professional comps and national sides in international comps.

Im sure if they had a choice they would take playing for their country in a WC over a ML game

I doubt the lads had a choice. I'd say they had few players to pick from at the moment.

I think thats the point being made. The IRFU don't appear to be prioritising the Sevens national team at all. Otherwise, players like Cave and Earls would be going.

Its unfortunate cos with those players, I think we could have made an even better go of it.

They are playing Magners League, fella
They are fringe members of an intl squad that is now past the halfway stage of a 6N that it currently leads.

Sevens teams from the likes of a Top Tier country will, as I pointed out before, consist of some senior players who are out of international contention, some fringe players trying to break into pro-rugby and pro-players coming back from an injury.
Feel free to compare with the other 6N, Tri Nations or Argentinian squads.
You'll notice the same with referees officiating in it. They are fringe panellists.

Thats why I rolled the eyes.
If you still don't get it then I'm sorry.

I know but it's hard for them to what with it being played in the middle of the 6 nations. It's just stupid having it on at the same time.

But Cave, Earls and Sexton are not going to be playing in this 6N. As for ML, not nice to say, but it is only the ML. I think these theams can go on without a few players.

Personally, I would have liked to see our best team head out there, without impacting the 6N.

They are on standby and when not with province, they are with the rest of the intl squad in camp.
Irish team doing nothing different to any of the other pro teams.

Does that mean we can't? The only real opportunity these players will have to play in this 6N is in the Scotland game, but I don't think they will anyway.

Why not be different and actually make a better go of the Sevens tournament? Of course, I will still support our guys that have gone, but will always think we could have done better.

They are 'on-call' so no, they cannot be called up.

They are making a go of this Sevens. It is no coincidence that other unions select their respective Sevens sides like this and use it for the same as each other.

Good start for the Canucks so far. Hockeying the Scots by 5 tries to none in the first half. 5 mins to go.

I'm not saying they can be called up either. I am saying they should have been. Its not like the Sevens tournament snuck up on the IRFU, they just decided not to prioritise it, which is a shame.

Again, just because other teams decide to pick their teams in one way, does not nail down the IRFU in their decisions.

    Latest form RWC sevens website:

Pool A, Samoa 14-5 Ireland: Two converted tries to Samoa in an entertaining first half sees them up by nine.

damn, its not being shown on setanta ireland, if you are using eircom, you can watch it here http://setanta-video.eircom.net/eircom/channels/Live.aspx live, but no ireland game :<

Pool D, Samoa 35-Ireland 5: Samoa stamped their class on this match with three tries to Rupena Levasa proving to strong for Jon Skurr's men.

worrying after half time when the aussys got 2 handy tries!
need to keep up the momentum for 14 minutes!
    fingers crossed!

Sets up for a good game against Portugal. Could be just as close as Aus with a score in the difference.

With temps nearing 30C, the Irish team did brilliantly as they were obviously tiring.

Game vs Portugal in under two hours at 12.52.

They sure are. They hammered France, for example, in Dubai in round one of the Series before christmas.
    Very powerful Sevens players.

    Finals day.
First three in each group go into the Bowl, Plate and Cup respectively.
Ireland must finish third at least to progress.

Just realised last night that Setanta is free for the month of March on Rogers Cable here in Ontario!:D

Fiji are absolutely pummelling France now (I think it's live) Fiji 26 France 0 with three and a half minutes to go.

    Ireland 24 Australia 21 ( a cracker of a game!)
Ireland 05 portugal 17 (legs went ,portugal had the experience)
still hopefully we might get a run out tomorrow!
I see that samoa beat australia 19 zip so it must go down to points scored!

I think Ireland will finish third above Australia on the basis of the head-to-head match. Despite the Aussies having a superior points difference, it appears from the rules that the first point of reference is the match result between the two teams should they be level on points in the pool.

On that basis, it looks like Ireland will get the last qualifying place, reducing the Aussies to fouth.:)

Scratch that, by virtue of the three teams finishing on 5 points, and each beating one of the other two, it appears that we've finished fouth.:(
