Pity the seat he was sitting on was not attached to the door.

It's only a pity he didn't follow the door.
    He is as much use.

He probably bored the door off it's hinges. I'd say the door go so sick of listening to him it took one look down onto the field below and decided to take it's chances...

Fact: It costs almost as much to keep a chopper on the ground as it does in the air.Only main difference is the fuel and some other incidentals such as positioning to base etc. These flts can also be used for training purposes, and would probably have to be flown anyway.

If you REALLY want to save costs, scrap the Air Corps altogether.

Not for a second backing up the politicians, but those costs are way out of line.

Meh, he needed to get somewhere in a hurry.

Cleary the ministerial Ferrari Enzo was in use elsewhere.

The funny thing is, the angry Joe Duffy/After Hours mob will have forgotten about this within days. Ministerial air travel is one of these cyclical things that people like to get angry about once in a while and forget about for the rest of the time (usually concerns the government jet but this case is similar). Kinda like a menstrual cycle. The government surely know that this "outrage" will blow over, as always, so why would they give a crap what we have to say now? They must have an awfully good laugh at us.

Why did the minister have to be there in person, why can they not use telecommunications? I rather see them spend 8K on a good screen and camera. Was the minister needed in person?

And if they did that, people whould whine that they just sit in their offices and never go to meet the people.

basically, it doesn't matter what the government does, there will be a baying crowd of cretins ready to shout loudly about it.

It would make more sence to purchase something that can be used over and over... The car and the driver are still being payed for while he takes his flight... I never understood why they couldn't drive themselves.

Now I have no problem having flights being payed for, but reasonable flight prices. 8 thousand euro to get from dublin to kerry... think about it.

The trip cost 8130? But that's 8130 more than what Cullen is worth!

Helicopters are specialised modes of transport, and expensive in comparison to the train, or a car.
But they are also more flexible, secure and quicker than anything else i can think of.

The helicopter is there for exactly these kinds of things, why shouldn't it be used? As someone else pointed out it costs nearly the same to keep the thing on the ground so what exactly is the issue here? That a government minister used a government resource? Really?

So can i just take it that this thread in a sentance would be- "people display shock that things cost money" because that's all i'm seeing.

What was so important that he needed a huge expence like this? He couldn't have drove down? Got the train? He could have even taken a flight.

This is not an issue of security and keeping our ministers safe. If it one rule for the people and another for it's rulers, who are not doing a whole lot at the moment.

There are alternative transport methods available that would not cost as much, there are also other methods of holding meetings that would cost a lot less in the long run.

The money is being squandered. It is a complete joke. The government are telling us that we need to take pay cuts, that taxes will be raised, yet they are doing nothing to reduce their own personal expences within the government? Hypocricy? I think so.

There is no two ways about it. The expence was needless.

Who ever said that a grounded chopper costs the same as a chopper in flight is talking through their ass. Yes the crew get paid regardless, but they would be on other duties, training exercises or the likes. Using an expensive resource like this, as a mode of transport for a minister, is a complete and utter waste of money.

What was so urgent that he had to go to Kerry anyway? Could he not have left the night before? Could he not have left earlier? I am sure he wasn't on the brink of anything major that he had to use such expenses...

The fact of the matter is, we cannot afford this now, why is it still continuing?

I don't see a huge problem here, if the helichopter is costing money either way and the minister needs to be somewhere then that's what it's there for. As long as it was necessary I'd have no problem with it. It could have wasted a whole day using a car.

No, this is a big problem it's a Military chopper belonging to The Irish Air Corps AW139 fleet which main roles are Army Support/General Utility/Military Transport and Air Ambulance, these should not be used as a "Taxi" service for a Minister.

This was not necessary, he could have flown Ryanair, if Gordon Brown can fly British Airways.....Also whats worse is the fact a second AW139 was on Training in Cork and was DIVERTED from Training to pick up this fool. What a waste of Taxpayers money and valuable Military Training time.

    WHHHIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEE

    There, much better.

    but on one point
I am sure he wasn't on the brink of anything major that he had to use such expenses...

    really, how sure are you?
because i'm pretty sure you've no clue at all. Then again neither do i, but it's lazy and pathetic to simply assume that every politician does nothing but find new ways to piss off the mob of window lickers in AH. I mean, i know if you do it means you fit in better, but still.

Not all politicians are liars and crooks, not all actions are dishonest and not all expenses are lacking in justification, contrary to popular belief.
Anyone who says otherwise is being stupidly cynical.

Sir, dont be so stupid, a helicopter shooting down an ICBM, what do you mean a dangerous situation it's vital training with Helicopters especially if you are in the Military. I didnt mention a dangerous situation or that they were with the Army when the second helicopter was diverted, the fact of the matter is that it's a Military Helicopter that should be used for Military purposes be it training with the Army or whatever it needs to do at a certain time it should not perform as a Taxi service to a Minister.
