I'm going to be a bit kinder..I think it depends who's on the panel. But it's true they've pretty much been flogging the same stories for at least a year now.Though it was a massive improvement,IMO, when they got rid of Cantwell. What a nasty,antagonising,narrow-minded man he often was on the show.

Agree about Cantwell. Sent in a totally reasonable and rational text to the show last year which went against the PC opinion all the panelists were agreeing on that multiculturalism and mass immigration was a wonderful thing. I suggested it might be enriching for the middle class panelists but it mightn't be so enriching for working class people who are competing for low paid jobs or whose kids are in classes where most of the children speak little English.
He read the text out in a sneering voice with a sneering look on his face, followed by "hmph, well thanks very much, what's his problem?", then flung the sheet he was reading from halfway across the desk.
Haven't watched since but glad to hear the intolerant buffoon has been confined to autocue reading duties.

Midday's great when Beibhinn Byrne is on, i also like Fiona Looney, Triona McCarthy and Sinead Ryan. Amanda Brunker can be funny but too ignorant to be truly interesting and is full of promoting herself so is a bit of turn off that way. Colette is also a much better presenter than Elaine. So the quality really seems to vary depending on the panel every week. But it's always good with Ms's Byrne! they should have her, the looney, the mccarthy and the ryan on every week!

Anyone else you've forgotten, Beibhinn? Don't want any bitch-fights now.

well yeah there are some other panellists i enjoy but i think these ones are the best and i think TV3 should just bite the bullet and let the show have a stronger identity like the view or loose women as that's what it's really a mixture of. they should also bring on the 'celeb' guests for them to interview. although in Ireland that would probably mean oirish z-list tits that appear on the late late/brendan o'connor show. so maybe not, and beibhinn is really my favourite what's so wrong with that?

They would need to invest some money into the series, and they have no real intention of doing that. It gives them an hour of the requirements so that they can have a 24 service.

You mean the Panelist from Midday?????

There is nothing wrong with giving air time to different people in the Irish Entertainment/Arts industry. There are plenty of singers, writers, actors etc living in Ireland that they could have appear on the show and give some exposure to.

no i mean other people from outside the show. the panellists are not celebs but as i said when i think what passes for a 'celeb' or person of interest in this country perhaps not.
although, you have shone a light on that negativity and i do agree with you that there are genuinely talented interesting people out there that could do with the exposure.
the producers should think a bit more outside the box
    outside the box-geddit?:D

    What's this facsination with 'celebs'?

Can we not watch a TV show nowadays without someone instantly recognisable?

It's all getting very sad folks..

I'd give Beibhinn her own show. She could do the big celeb interviews with the likes of that horsefaced one from Xpose who always looks like she just sat on a drawing pin or that Sammy Sausages chap who does the weather of a morning (he's gas and always has a cheeky twinkle in his eye) or even Derek Mooney (but they probably couldn't afford him)

which part of this did none of you read?
A Disgrace i wasn't endorsing 'celeb' culture i have even put the word between inverted commas to point out the fact i feel it is a dubious category
i was really referring to it in terms of the format of the show.
is Jesse Ventura a 'celeb'? No, but he is a notable person in America with interesting things to say and The View had him on. so re: midday i thought maybe they should follow this format? because they are copying the show it might be interesting. however knowing Ireland-see above quote.
but Elmo had a great point about interesting people who could have exposure and i agree with him/her. Just weighing it all up.
But tintin67 LOL great to see somebody else with great sense of humour-she'd rip em to shreds i say! only the wastefulness (NOT of the interviewees) would be intolerable.

You are trying too hard now and it's embarrassing. Fwiw I saw Byrne on a couple of midday shows and to say she was out of her depth would be putting it mildly. When you consider her fellow panelists included Biddy from glenroe and Mary O Rourke then I'm afraid it doesn't say much for her.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 almalfi

what????? appreciating others' comments is trying too hard????? isn't this a discussion forum??
as for out of her depth -you think biddy from glenroe and mary o rourke are 'deep', interesting? intelligent? entertaining beings? besides there are very good panellists on midday they don't get to choose who they appear on the show with. the discerning viewer will decide for themselves. but judging by you're last comment -there's no accounting for taste!

back to the show did anyone see the debate between marion mckeone and the other barrister about the teen sex ruling? it was really interesting. that's what i enjoy about this show, the discussion and different perspectives

postscript: how can any of them be out of their depth? it's a woman's show not tonight with VB. so unless some of them are secretly men....

The biggest pain in the hole is Fiona Looney, talk about an empty vessel making most noise well she's a prime example. She really shows herself up to be a right gob****e and recently looked a right ejeet when she thought she was making a smart comment but all she ended up doing was showing her own stupidity, she didn't even know what a free range chicken was and the rest of the panel had to pull her up on it.

I don't know how she hasn't been sued for some of the comments she's made, recently on the Gerry Ryan show she claimed Breville sandwich toasters caused obesity, not just any sandwich toaster but specifically named Breville.

She's definitely the sort that likes the sound of her own voice and will often make some stupid comment and then in the next breathe say the complete opposite. She's like someone who's constantly seeking attention. As for the negative comments she made vilifying Jade Goody having her children on tv yet she had no problem parading her own children on No Frontiers when they got to go on a holiday to France. Pot Kettle Black.

I was stuck watching this in my nanas house the other day.

I will credit TV3 with one thing.

They advertised a new mens show, similar to midday.

The women on midday slagged it off saying it will never work, men wont ring in to share their feelings blah blah.

Then the presenter said "ok you caught us, thats the ireland am kitchen they were in" ( she said it in a way that came across as "ha ye we couldnt be arsed making a new set")

But if that was RTE, they would prob be sacked for slagging off another rte show.

I was surprised TV3 had a scene of Humour. TV3 are generally unwilling to allow themselves look bad for example they dealt badly with the departure of Grainne Seoige and Claire Byrne, and it is unlikely that they would have allowed Midday slag off or talk about Play TV.

But then Aprés Match doesn't exist at RTÉ.

deisemum -i think fiona looney's brilliant on it and is one of my favourites she's herself and quite funny and if she agrees or disagrees with another panellist she will say it. i think she makes the show interesting when she's on. People don't have to be right all the time, I think it's informative when they end up thrashing things out, it can also be quite entertaining.

Oh yes quite entertaining, I remeber when she was talking about her husband or her pregnancy or maybe it was her kids and then excrement began pouring out of her mouth....oh wait no that was jus a dream...or was it a dream.

The woman has a face like a bulldog licking piss off a nettle and uses her family to go one free holdays on no frontiers. If RTE had any sense it should be a one way trip to the moon.

Im sure she's lovely in person though...:D

Then why quote it in full?

If you have a vested interest please declare it now. Are you a TV3 employee?

I've a Breville sandwich toaster and I'm a fat bastard, so she shouldn't lose marks on that account, love.

Will someone tell Geraldine o Callaghan that her five minutes of fame are up! TV3 must be desperate to have someone like her on.

If TV3 got money from the tv licence, i'd ask for my money back!
