Hello there, moving to Sligo the end of March. Have an office in the IT Sligo incubation centre.

Not so sure I want to live in Sligo itself. Where is a nice place to live around. Thinking of renting my own place. Is Strandhill too full of tourists during the summer? What about Rosses Point?

    Appreciate any suggestions.

If your travelling to the IT coming from Strandhill will mean you'll have to deal with lots of traffic, Rosses Point is a better bet if being close to the sea is your main criteria.

What sort of area would you like? We live in a small but lively village 15 minutes away from Sligo town in *whisper* Co.Leitim on the border of Co.Sligo. There are lots of people who live here from the city and there are a lot who study in I.T. Or would you prefer beside the water?

Rosses Point might be a bit dead in winter. Lovely spot though if you can afford it.

    Strandill is nice or Dromahair.

Thanks for all the replies lads. Is the Dromahair road the one going by St. Angelas college?

That's the one. Straight to the I.T. There are loads of empty houses and a pub especially for the blow-ins!

    Sligo Village People.

Strandhill – A mixture of a self regarding international traveler/surfer set and insular and bitter natives.

Rosses Point – Well heeled and self regarding snobs bore each other to death in Golf/Yacht club.

Dromahair – An influx of young creative’s fleeing high Sligo prices has ensured that this village has succeeded Coolera in the local Adultery league.

Ballisodare/Colooney – Those who can’t afford to live in Sligo.

Coolaney - Those who can’t afford to live in Ballisodare/Colooney

Carney – Small but surprisingly lively Village has a mixture of eccentric locals, Boho Professionals and Sligo's Creative and intellectual elite who live on the Maugherarow peninsular because they choose to and we reserve the right to insult visitors when we are full of whisky..

Well i sort of agree and disagree, the people you speak of above are not the locals of rosses point they are the people who have moved there just because they have enough money to do so they give the village the snobbish name. The thing is they have there big houses and 2 mercs outside their door but there the type of people you don't see in the pubs etc. The real locals are the people you see about the place not the ones up to their balls in dept with the big cars and big houses.

Also Austies restaurant is to open in the next few weeks, its been out of action for the last year, also the waterfront is under going refurbishment and should be open by Easter.

And add to the mix: lot of city people from germany, holland, Dublin. Even some lecturers at the IT!!!

ps we insult on beer aswell.

Traffic from Strandhill to the IT is okay if you go the back road by Gibraltar. The only busy spot is the bridge and that isn't so bad as you are taking the right hand lane and so pass a lot of traffic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,539 ✭✭✭jimmmy

Still is bad enough traffic wise at peak times. Rosses Point is nicer but obviosusly demand is higher to live there, and prices highest in Sligo. There are some lovely places around North Co. Sligo by the sea though...and on the same side of Sligo as the IT.

I agree with Jimmmy, If country living is your thing, The Maugherarow peninsula is a cheaper and liviler alternative to Rosses Point. It has 4 good beaches, a good surfing spot, is pretty much unspoiled and is very very beautiful, the light out there is really something, and thr costal ares have a very Atlantic and elemental feel. Carney is a fun little place and there are three other pubs, and a supermarket in Grange. Oh and travel time is about the same as The Point.

Never thought I would see the day maugherarow was suggested as a good place to live?

Be warned its like a set of the hills have eyes down there and they don't like "outsiders"

You are listening to old Wifes Tales.

Maugherarow was perhaps the first rural area in the County to have an influx of outsiders, from the seventies on creative types(Think Dermot Healy, Leland Bardwell, Sean McSweeney) and the exotic vegatable patch brigade moved into the area. Locals in Ellens and Jordans and the Pubs in Carney do not bat an eyelid when outsiders even of the most eccentric kind come in, they are well used to it. Nowadays it has similar population mix to The Strandhill and Rosses point peninsulas, a mixture of Blow ins and Stay Behinds.

The outsiders thing could be said about many places in Sligo.

Most places in Sligo don't have homes that stock shotguns that shoot pitchforks!!

Still looking. Havent found anything round Strandhill/Rosses Point yet. Been just looking in Daft.ie
    Any other suggestions?

Have you tried the Sligo Champion, or Weekender?

Hi folks, this is a great thread, as I'm moving to Sligo at the end of June. Although Strandhill/Rosses Point would be cool, I don't see the sense in paying through the nose to live there. To me, there are lots of places around Sligo that are just as nice, and dare I say, unspoilt? We're looking for somewhere near the coast, and thought Skreen was nice, and are travelling up to check out Maugherow over the weekend.

Well suggested earlier, I'll pick up the weekender, and see what's on there, as I've trawled Daft.ie way too much.. Same stuff all the time.

At the risk of sliding way off topic, does anyone know what the broadband services are like around Maugherow? If they're bad, then we can't live there, as I'll be working from home, and we are internet junkies

Why do people have an aversion to living in Sligo town itself? It is the only large town in Ireland that is shrinking, population wise, not growing. It would better to live close to decent public transport, better for less reliance on the car, close to the amenities Sligo has to offer and would also build up the critical mass the town is crying out for.

Sligo has the potential to become the next Galway, but it's being held back. People all wanting to live around, but not in, the town isn't helping this.

I totaly agree, start with putting the market (both, market yard and the organic together) allong the river like the french market. There is a real buzz in town when thats there! A lot of improvement with places where you can sit outside already though.

We live in Dromahair though and have to say it's great to live here!

Hey, firstly Sligo is fine but the countryside is much better in several ways....mainely as you said , Strandhill is full of tourists but its not a bad place. But Rosses Point is nice too. I just recommend Rosses Point:cool:

After spending the past few days driving around Skreen, North Sligo, Dromahair, I'd also be interesting in checking out the suburbs of the town itself before coming to a decision.

We are looking for a 5-6 bedroom house, in a quiet location; any suggestions?

    and a pub oppside it:eek:

i know their's a few houses for sale if your interested i will get info for you

If you prefer rolling hills, rivers and lakes then try Riverstown ...
    Nice village, great community
Fixed line Broadband and decent o2 mobile broadband
10 minutes drive to at least 3 fishing lakes
    15-20 minutes from Sligo
but also only 20 mins to Carrick on Shannon
Forest Park in boyle 15 minutes away
Also Union Wood nice for walks, jogs
    I could go on

Your only option for Broadband in Maugherow is from Fastcom afaik. It's wireless (2Mb up and down) and though it suffered from oversubscription for a while they seem to have sorted it out. No download limits either. There is a coverage map on their site too.

If your in the town or most of the surrounding villages you can get most of the usual providers over the telephone line.

Digiweb also offer wireless and wired broadband in other parts of Sligo and are worth checking out if you don't move to Maugherow.

I've got fastcom here in Coolaney - it's fine during the day, slowish at peak times & at almost €40 a month, a complete rip-off. A bit of competition would be nice.

Still, it's a nice place to live!

hey.so i hav read a few comments and well im just going to give my 2 cents.Rosses point is cool a bit of a trek though if your heading to th i.t.

You should try strandhill its pretty cool not that expensive and not that far to the i.t. if you go down by the sea road.
its a nice place to be like our very own summer bay.

Aright laters folks good luck with your decision who ever started this thread

To be honest its actually probably easier to get to the I.T from Rosses Point than it is from Strandhill.

I'd recommend looking at places around North Sligo or out the Dromahair road or Old Manorhamilton Road.
