It used to belong to Breifne O'Brien, who built one of the irish pyramids.

Anyone know who owns owned this???

Someone who does not have 250k cash but a bank was willing to give a personal loan for not far off that. If less than 150k left on the loan the person could have auctioned & pocketed the difference?

I doubt they'll get 150k for it in the current economic climate.

I can't get my head around how anyone can spend this kind of money on a car.

I know it's not cheap, but it's hardly "one of the most expensive cars in the world" is it?

Are you sure this used to be his or are you just suggesting that??? There can't be that many of these in the country... Was this same car not for sale at a private auction at the K Club recently???

They didn't, they spent the bank's money on it.

Seriously though, in 21st century Ireland there were lots of people who spent and lived outside of their means. They lived a life they couldn't afford, lending institutions encouraged it and ignored the repucutions down the line.

The sad thing is that whatever final price they manage to get for that DB9 you can bet the tax payer will probably end up footing the bill for the bank's loss on it in the form of another Government bail out.

I have a cunning plan Gentlemen.

A plan so cunning that it is more cunning than a cunning fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at the Faculity of Cunning at Oxford University.

I propose that we rounds us up a posse of Boards homeboys, each stumping up the princely sum of €410.96, together this fellowship of fine fellows bid, and yes indeed, purchase thia Aston Martin that we speak off.

We then each, but once a year, have this fine punani magnet for but for a single day each.

Imagine the riding of white heeled hussies we shall all do on such a momentous day!

What say ye fine men, are you with me ?

(I bagsies going first and I promise to wipe the seats afterwards, car can be collected after I'm finished outside Krystal nightclub).

I was going to put in a bid, but once I read about the rear lamp lenses falling off I felt I would stick with my Focus

A friend of a friend in London sold his software company to Seagate in the mid 90's and the first thing he did was go out and buy a *new* DB9.

In the first week one of the wing-mirrors and both wipers fell off, the car constantly stalled and cut-out.

In short, it was what they used to call in British Automotive circles, a 'Friday-afternoon' car.

He got a full refund from Aston after about 4 weeks of motoring misery and then proceeded to buy a fully-loaded 7-series BMW.

    Its a great scam.

Buy a €300k Aston through a reg company, pay 1 installment, then default on the loan, keep the car abroad. After 1 year let it be seized then buy it back at auction for less than half price,

I can't see this car selling for more than 100k.

    Bargain

hasn't gone through the auction yet, I reckon it wont be sold. bet it could be bought for 75k.

saw it 2 days after been brought in, condensation inside both headlamp covers was unbelievable for a car of this class!!

yep, all I know is that it didn't meet the reserve, last Saturday week I'd say it was; theres a thread here somewhere re merlins on-line auction where it gets a mention; I was watching on-line and the AM was on the list, but couldn't stay watching till it came through because of all that having a life going on.
I reckon it only appeared in the Herald when they couldn't shift it to try get the bidding going.

Friend of mine (not a friend of a friend - I've actually been driven in his car) bought his second Aston (he sold the other one) in 2005. Brand new Vanquish. In 4 months it was back in the dealers 7 times for various warranty & other problems. After actually getting to drive the car a grand total of 9(!) days in the first 4 months, he lobbed the keys on the dealers desk and said write me cheque I've had enough.

Mind you he did buy a Porsche after that (shame it was a Cayenne) and yes, he is gay :D

Aparantly (going on what I was told today) this car belonged to a Galway Property Developer who passed away last week. He owed money so obviously his assets are to be sold off

Not naming the person out of respect to the family

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

I'd say the reserve on something like this is at least €150,000, no way would they let it go for €75,000.

Unlikely, it would be very quick to have the car already in the auction house (and been there for a week or so) if the man died last week. Usually these things take a month at least.

His cars (including a Bentley, I believe) were lifted a few weeks ago, before he passed.

because merlin have a bracket for when the NCT expires, rather than leave it empty, they fill in when it is due, essentially giving you the first month of registration.

    2007 DB9 Due NCT in 2011
    2008 R32 Due NCT in 2012

    both cars from merlin auctions.

I'm pretty sure that that isn't his one.

If you have ever been to Merlins, when a car is knocked down a phone call is made to the bank to see if they will accept the bid. If not the car goes back into the auction. Just because your winning bid is €75k there is a good chance the bank will refuse your winning bid.

I think you'll find that the repossesion of the DB7 is not unrelated to the attached news item.
