Lots of people didn't understand the appeal of the Beatles first time around to but they were the ones, the yardstick many other bands were compared to .U2 are Different to any other band around to .

Im a huge fan of all types of music and attend numerous gigs.

To be honest nor did I until the gig in Dublin, I have never experienced anything like U2 live, I liked some of their stuff before hand but I would now call myself a fan after that one live show.

What has Spanish speakers go to do with anything? A lot of countries speak Spanish!

Anyone who the U2 of today that much doesn't know much about music or is simply a die hard who just accepts what's presented to them.

Because people like sh*t - as long as it's well marketed that is.

Ah here, I don't think U2 have done anything worthwhile since 93 but I think it's just starting to be the cool thing to not like them at this stage. I know Bono is an absolute twat but you cant say that some of their early stuff is fantastic. ALOT of begrudgery going on here at this stage, then again we are Irish.

Yeah, they did some superb stuff in the 80s, particularly the first half of the decade.

I'm of the same view as you (nothing of much interest since '93, the constant U2 slating is getting old - possibly in some cases it's to be "cool") but I don't know whether it's begrudgery.

I agree there is a lot of begrudgery with them, I don't think they are that bad, but I don't think they are that great either. They are huge globally.

Bono's restless spirit and expansive humanity is a harbinger of better; a selfless instance of altruism and a rich, green sprig of hope extended aloft to the parched Atacama of our collective conscience.

He is truly the question that requires no answer.

I find a couple of songs from their hayday alright. And although I went and bitched about them (and their overpriced concert tickets) in another thread a bit, I'd still much rather hear a U2 song on the radio than Aslan or the ****ing Frames  god I hate The Frames.

they released some great albums in the 1980s and put on a fine live show, there are other bands in the same boat e.g metallica

I dunno, I'd say the music, but that seems a little too obvious. Must be something else. Probably some kind of pheromone.

True, true, people's taste change & most bands eventually run their course. I still haven't listened to the new Metallica album though, heard good things when it came out first but that could have been hype

I'd hate them a lot less if their fans didn't look at you like you were on the sex offenders list when you utter the words "I don't like U2". Oirish people make them out to be the best thing since studded condoms just because they're Irish. It's more tiresome than the anti-U2 brigade.

    In summary, U2 are sh1te.

oh... and Bono needs a massive cock to hold his ears apart.

Now now, no need to get personally insulted because some people don't like a band that you do like. World would be boring without diversity don't ya think!?

Just an observation. I could have just as well have said Spain but I didn't because they could also be from South or Central America. Or possibly the Phillipines although they don't look filipino.

I dont know about that "putting Ireland on the map"

I think there popular because they have some cracking tunes and put on probably one of the best live shows out there

With that said there last two abums are absolute pants.

The manager of the place where I worked in the States couldn't get over the fact that I, an Irish person, had never been to a U2 concert. He'd seen them something like 30 times - though I expect that's probably doubled at this stage as that was two years ago.

He was the biggest U2 fan I've ever met though. He actually had their faces and autographs tattooed onto his back.

He also claimed that Bono loves him.

This is what I mean, it's this sort of fanatic madness that exists. I met a guy from South Africa who had their birthdays pencilled in his diary.

U2 are very similar to an Ipod.

Both are good but not the best at what they do.

Both remain popular due to clever marketing.

I am a U2 fan and there new album is pretty good for the most part.

    Bill Bailey U2 sketch FTW.

I don't like U2 it's due to what I call 'Led Zeppelin syndrome'. There's some cracking tunes but I just "don't get it". The edge just seems to layer guitar pedals on and little else...

But my god are they popular so what do I know!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,639 ✭✭✭PeakOutput

hating u2 is definitely the 'cool' thing to do at the moment but then begrudgery has always been 'cool' in this country

i think bono is a bit of a twat i think there are kids who can play guitar better then the edge and i think larry mullen seems to be a pretty cool guy so i suppose im basically indifferent to them

however if asked to choose between u2s entire back catalogue or the back catalogue of 90% of the artists in the top 40 at the moment to bring to a desert island for the rest of my life id pick u2s in a heartbeat

    Well I don't think it's the lyrics.

    U2
    Get On Your Boots lyrics

    Future needs a big kiss
    Winds blow with a twist
Never seen a move like this
    Can you see it too
    Night is falling everywhere
    Rockets hit the funfair
    Satan loves a bomb scare
    But it won't scare you

    Hey...Sexy Boots
    Get on your Boots
    Yeah...

Free me from the dark dream
    Candy bars, ice cream
All the kids are screaming but the ghosts arent real
    Heres what you gotta be
    Love & community
Laughter is eternity if the joy is real

    You dont know how beautiful
    You dont know how beautiful
    You are...
    You dont know
    You get it do you
    You dont know
    How beautiful you are...

    If someones into blowing up
    Were into growing up
    Women are the future
    All the big revelations
    Ive gotta submarine
    Youve got gasoline
I dont wanna talk about wars between nations
    Not right now

    Sexy Boots
    Get on your Boots
    Yeah...
    Foxy boots

    You dont know how beautiful
    You dont know how beautiful
    You are...

    Sexy Boots
I dont wanna talk about wars

    Let me in the sound
    Let me in the sound
    Let me in the sound
    My God Im going down
    I dont wanna drown now
    Let me in the sound

    Let me in the sound
    Let me in the sound
    Let me in the sound

    Get on your Boots
    Get on your Boots
    Yeah...

A few posts hit the nail on the head, they were good in the 80's and they're trading on that success. If any new band came out with All that you can't leave behing, how to dismantle, or this latest rubbish they wouldn't get a music deal, never mind sell millions of albums.
