    hola,
not sure if Shpongle still even count as being the type of thing you'd post about in the dance/electronic forum but what the hell, I'm buzzed about it anyway.

For anyone interested I thought it worth posting this as tix will be snapped up pretty quickly even though it's not till October. They're cheap and I have mine anyway.

    http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/whats-on/productions/shpongle-3022

    Party on,

    M

Would have thought they'd be exactly the type of thing. It's can't be all old skool and minimal techno...

    groovy, that's what I thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭EvolutionNights

Highly recommended. I went to it last year (same date and venue). Its an excellent venue in the heart of Camden. Twisted records also threw a top after party in Scala, Kings Cross. I reckon they’ll be doing the same this year. 2 tickets were on ebay for €500 for last year. People were giving them away for free outside the venue on the night. Happy days.

    Anyone go to this?
    Or get the new album?

I love it. Took a few listens to get into it, but there's some great work in it. He's a great producer, Simon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

    loving the new album.

was at the launch gig and had a not too great time. Sniffer dogs on the way in made it all a bit scary as they were barking like crazy due to nearly everyone carrying (it's a Shpongle gig after all).

Sound was not great, too much mid range and not enough <100 bass
I'd slipped a disc in my back a few days beforehand so could not dance and spent most of the evening leaning against the sound desk surround.

Still, glad I went, got a chance to hear the new music and meet up with a few friends from around the world who'd travelled.

the new album is a real trip :D

My brother said its ****. He told me not to bother listening to it - nowhere near Are You Sphongled or Tales of the Inexpressible.

So taking his word, thats two class albums, and two not so class albums from Posford using that alias....

Also, did Raja Ram feature on this album?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

yea Raja Ram is on the album. It's prob uncool to say this but I thought he featured far too much at the launch gig. There's only so much flute I can take :p.
I'd rate the album 2nd behind Tales. It's a grower and took me a few listens to get into it but loving it now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭fuse

Yea I agree with OldGregg, Tales is best album, but new one ain't far behind. Defo takes a few listens, some of the tracks are beautiful tho, not so out there, more younger brothery downtempo which suits me.. Nothing Is Something.. and Invisible Man. Shpongalese spoken here and Walking Backwards are keeping it shpongled, great tracks.

Raja doesn't really seem to appear too much on the album, a few really nice flute pieces, not sure what else, probably a few vocal samples & the likes but I'd say Simon was responsible for 90% of the album somehow.

Would have loved to have gone to the gig, still worth the trip tho I'd say oldGregg, I suppose things like that will always be best the first time they happen. Hoping Younger Brother start gigging once the new album is out next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

    yep, fuse has nailed it.

as an aside, if there's a 2010 Roundhouse gig I'll still go but will make sure of a few things in advance ... 1) do not have slipped disc 2) smoke all the weed before going in

I`m loving the new album. The live dvd of the 2008 gig is fantastic too. I was there and its as good as I remember.
"Nothing is something worth doing" and "I am you " are probably my faves.

Those sniffer dogs were there last year too freaking everyone out.

I'd just like to say that thanks to this thread I checked out Shpongle, and I think I've found my new favourite ambient electronic artist. Cheers for that lads. :D

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I really have to get this... had it in my hand recently but opted for something else instead (well, three other CDs, couldn't justify a fourth :) )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

yea, I've fallen in love with this album. Every listen is just a little bit better than the last. Crack open a bag of weed and away you go to Shpongleland.

It will get a spin at my birthday party later tonight/tomorrow morning

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

    Big birthday celebrations planned?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

yea, a bunch of folks getting together in Downes pub in Waterford, and then back to my house for some late night techno, psytrance and maybe even even a bit of early morning ambient. PA system is set up, lappy is ready, a mate is bringing decks, sausage rolls are waiting to hit the oven, beer is on way from cash and carry and recreationals are taken care of.

If ya feel like an all-nighter in Waterford then come on down.

    All welcome.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Sounds like a cracking night planned... the ambient bit in the morning an especially nice way to wrap up, nothing like a party where folk appreciate the chilled come down the next day. Shpongle at 7am, frost outside and spliffs with hot chocolate being passed around :pac:

Would love to drop down but the Mrs would say otherwise! :(

Happy Birthday, have a great one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

    thanks man.
nice picture you paint there, maybe around 10am snuggling up with a warm reindeer ... or have I just gone overboard and broken the law.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,325 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Yeah the reindeer bit might kinda take it a bit extreme, unless of course you plan sleeping with it which makes it ok. :pac: with Shpongle playing in the background of course, or Fairytale of New York, given the time of year.

The Fairy Tale of Shpongle is blowing me away ... really loving the Hang Drums in the youtube video linked for "Nothing is Something Worth Doing"

Should be a good one. Can`t wait.

Younger brother are also playing March 30th. They have a new album coming out too.
    :D

Sounds like a good night but I'll be home in Dublin by then unfortunately. Hope the matter gig is good, hopefully good vibes and cool people with all that trippy **** hanging from the ceiling. Really looking forward to seeing what the crowd is like (i.e. will a gig that goes on later than poxy dublin times be full of trippers or what?).

Boom festival in august I think, it's closer than ozora and pretty much guaranteed good weather. Got back into psytrance in a big way these last few weeks after I got 'Corridor of Mirrors' by Prometheus and the new Life venue got announced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

in case it's anything like the Shpongle gig, it will be late night & lots of folks tripping and nicely laid back and cool .... except for the sniffer dogs on the way in  .. after that, it's all 'far out man' :D

Yeah 12 is great value for all night.

I still haven't got the new Shpongle album!

crikey mate, if it was the new Westlife album you'd be all over it like a cheep suit :D:D:D:D:D

Looks a great lineup and one that I'd love to fly over for .... but in this case I'll do a Felix :p and do what the wife tells me and stay home.

Then again, an afternoon in Camden before scooting down to the gig does sound like my kind of day in London.

What, p*ss off - Westlife have a new album out? :pac:

Well I've put my foot down, no more under the thumb for me... oh no. I'm even going to Autechre :p Are you coming up to the 'big smoke' for that?

Here's the thing about Autechre ... I sort of want to go but have not enjoyed any of their music in a few years. I took a listen to a sampler thing on youtube of the new album and it did not do anything for me. I even got as far as the checkout purchasing tix yesterday and had cold feet. Maybe though.

My next trip to the 'big smoke' will be for a 'guilty pleasure' gig on Friday night ... 30 Seconds To Mars at the point.

Anyone remember the Shpongle DJ set at the Life Fest a few years ago? Missed that cos I was playing the chill tent at the same time :(. The Hallucinogen set that day was a brilliant buzz. The whole Neutronyx lineup that year was pretty good, if memory serves.

Yeah I agree, haven't been into any of the more recent output but would be a major fan of early Autechre. From what I have heard though they do put on a great show that wouldn't be anything typical of recent album material.

Never heard of 30 Seconds to Mars - sound kinda psychedelic rock by the name?

Angsty emo rock but becoming more electronic on the new album. Lets' just say that I'll likely be the oldest person there and the only guy not wearing black eye liner :D

Yep. I was there. The sun came out as soon as he played Dorset Perception.:D It was a top day at the Neutronyx stage.
Also heading over for the Matter party. My bro is playing in the other room.
It will be an excellent party. No word of an afterparty yet but surely there will be a Daytrippers type party on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,245 ✭✭✭old gregg

yea I'd imagine you'll have little problem locating an after party. If in doubt, drop into themost excellent Hexagon shop in Camden lock on the afternoon and they'll know of anything and everything going on.

Cool, what are the tunes in room two gonna be like?

To be honest I was pretty disappointed in posford at life that year he playing, it was on in the middle of the afternoon (which let's face it is prime kipping time at those events). Wasn't really many there too, didn't really blow me away tho.

On a related note, Simon's playing an album launch gig with Younger Brother 30th March. He's recruited a few new musicians for the new album. So should be an interesting gig, probably more band like than any of his other stuff.

It's in Cargo which is only 400 capacity, tickets work out around 10 pounds.
Would love to go but don't think I'll be able to make it.

yea I'd seen the Cargo launch on facebook and have been toying with going over.
As an aside, and on the broad topic of psytrance and stuff, anyone here ever gone over for a Tribe of Frog event? I've not done it but OOOD play them on a regular basis.

Yeah I've been to quite a few Frog nights from 2002-06. Well worth going to.
I've seen some top class acts at their parties. The next one will be a right stormer. http://www.tribeoffrog.co.uk/

The people that go really make an effort to contribute to the night and the Frogs decor is astounding. Their NYE and Halloween parties are legendary.

Never thought I'd see 30 Seconds to Mars mentioned in this forum :D

Gave Shpoogle a listen and liked what I heard. Was asked to go to the gig in Matter, but did not like the sound of Hallucinogen so decided to pass. Settled on going to see Vitalic, Plump DJs and Feadz the week after
