There is nothing wrong with the PS3 it is a perfect console in every way.

If I could change one thing it would be that Sony force all developers to use a set standard for multiplayer games. That way a developer like Konami would not be able to use their stupid Konmai ID system. They should have just copied the Microsoft model with Xbox Live.

it doesnt support all video formats. dont know how many times i have gone to watch something to find i have to convert it. pain.

I hate being forced to install all games and demos instead of having a choice like the 360. On the PS3 you dl a demo and then have to install it, on the 360 just dl and play.

PS3 is missing features it should have that MS have in Live silver that is also free.

The PS3 does not have custom play lists for games and its up to the game devs.

The general design of the PS3 controller. I find it too small for my hands and the position of the sticks is very uncomfortable. I have had a PS since day one so its not a matter of time. After using that pad for 12 years and moving to the 360 pad is a revelation for me, no more cramped and stiff thumbs and fingers.

The finish of the console, while it looks great and expensive compared to the cheap 360 feel, its a magnet for dust and fingerprints

Other than that the PS3 is a fine console.

In regards to the headsets, I'm glad they don't just give them away with the system. if every n00b, griefer and lamer out there had one we'd have a situation on the PS3 (like on the Xbox 360) where everybody is constantly trying to get you to listen to their favourite Jay Z track or questioning your sexuality and your mothers weight and possible hygiene problems  Making people buy the headset seems to filter out the losers who just want to grief people.

My main gripe with the PS3 though is the menu system... my GOD is it crap. I mean I have all my demos and PSN games in one large list with no way of sorting them. Why can't they just give us support for custom folders or labels even  Also, I don't even touch the music, picture and video sections due the horrible layout and sorting abilities of it.

Hate the PS controller design. I'm not going to bore you anymore on that.

I hate how slow the PSN network seems to be. It can take 20-30 minutes to download an update. Then to make matters worse you have to install the update which can take another 15 mins. I used to not play my PS3 much so it was very annoying that everytime I turned it on there was a massive update to download.

I hate the X bar menu system. I hate it even more because MS copied it with the new XBLA 'experience' which made it just as clunky and confusing as the PS3 menu system and replaced the excellent blade system.

The european PSN store is a joke. Massive delays and rubbish classic games. The japanese store makes a mockery of it.

    Where's the valkyria chronicles DLC?

When you download a game from the store you have to spend ages again to install it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭smooch71

The triggers on the controller suck.

I know you can get little stick on ones and they do make a big difference.

    But you shouldn't have to!

Particularly when you consider the sixaxis "triggers" are supposed to be an improvement over the Dualshock 2, they're not, they're rubbish.

About the only thing I prefer on the sweaty, crampy Xbox controller is the triggers.

    - The lack of support for the .mkv container, even though most video formats within (e.g. H264) are in fact supported...

    - No 3D acceleration for the GFX chip in Linux (which would solve the .mkv problem but nope, not possible...).

    - The awful PSN store.

    - The stupid process of downloading, then having to manually install demos, etc. Why the hell can't this not work like the Xbox? Download it and once done, it's ready to play...

    - Not sure about this one, I might be missing something: the lack of demos for PSN-only games, like Lumines, etc - every XBLA game can be played as a demo before purchase...

    Too many installs

    Downloads take forever

    No in-game group chat

Can't stream music while playing a game

    Awkard controller layout.

    PSN Store

    Boring UI.

    Home

I hate the console alot to be honest. I LOVE its exclusive lineup of games tho and the fact that you feel like you have more freedom using the PS3 rather than been restricted to alot of things on the 360.

There is actually a way of organising games and demos into folders.

No PS2 backwards compatability. Aside from that, nothing else is really bothering me about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,422 ✭✭✭RAIN

Live is far supperior to psn i knew that going in. i bought the console for the games and on that note it hasent disapointed (im talking about mgs4 and lbp....not haze etc)

the biggest gripe is the way the friend list is handled its just not as friendly as xbox lives friend lists, everything can be done in the blink of an eye on xbox live, check list, invite friend ,play game. done.

also the install times dont seem to do squat because the lenght of time it takes to start a game is a pain. you turn on halo and within litteraly 10 seconds your in matchmaking waiting for players.

resistance takes a good 40 seconds to get to that stage.lbp takes ages aswel.

mix the two systems together and you realy do have the perfect gaming experience, thats why i bought both :P

the store is basicly like one of those fake websites in GTA4 only with less content !!and home is .....well we all know what home is.

PAL PSN games and PS1 games not displaying on my NTSC PS3 unless I'm hooked up through HDMI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,994 ✭✭✭Polar101

The menu system is pretty bad. If I want to view a video I'm streaming on my media server, I have to go through quite a few different menus, and if I want to listen to streamed audio instead, the clickfest begins again.

Also, when you receive a chat request, why can't there be a simple "do you want to respond: yes/no" option, instead of having to go to mailbox, received, view request.. etc.

Fairly new to the ps3 and obviously can access the euro store but is it possible for me to access the japanese or US ones?

I don't like the fact I will have to move my avis and reformat my portable hd to view them.
Also, the controller doesn't charge on standby (I think)

The internet browser is utter sh!te, extremely slow and doesn't work well with keyboard. Can't cope with a lot of websites.

Linux is only allowed a tiny fraction of processing power, rendering it useless!

It picks up the keyboard as the no. 1 controller.

The firmware updates often leave you worse off then before.

Media streaming from PC is class but since last update doesn't work for me anymore.

I disagree with there headset comment. You can use any old bluetooth headset and tbh who wants to talk to 12 yr old fat yanks newyas...

Anywho back to the point, I don't like the triggers or the fact that you HAVE to buy those little extension things to put on.
Other than that i don't mind anything else

    only problems
Online PLay isnt the best at all times
No Mic as standard (i mean theres a recession going on here)
and saving the games to hardrive like the things that take up a gig each there a right pain in the a.r.s.echeek
oh and the 40gb oweners are treated like minoritys :|
other than those little things its great

The only small thing that annoys me is having to connect the control pad up every time you turn it on.

    Things i hate:

The CONTROLLER!. why cant someone just make an exact copy of the 360 controller. It'd definitely sell!

Music During Games. This should have been done from launch like the 360

Ipod compatibility. Apart from the fact, you cant properly listen to music during games, even not during games, the ps3 does'nt recognize the ipod properly. Its impossible to just choose one song!

The internet browser!, How can it be so slow and unworkable!

I'm sure theres more, i just cant think of them

The worst of all though is, as an owner of both 360 and ps3, is how, given the choice to buy a game on either format, i always go for it on 360. I know i pay for live and all but its just such a nicer experience playing on Live than PSN. The controller plays a large part as well, mind. I'm not sure the ps3 can ever make up for this tbh, and i'm genuinely sad to say that:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I hate the look of it. I just don't like the shape or the unneveness of it. I also don't like the slot disk drive. I'm always terrified that the disk is going to come flying out at high speed and kill me. Granted, that's more to do with me being mental than a design flaw, but I still don't like it.

I'm not too happy about the lack of backwards compatability on most models, and the menu makes baby Jesus cry.

Oh, and having to upgrade firmware every time I turn it on is getting a bit annoying.

Yes you can. You just have to create a new account and set it up in a US or japanese region. I think some credit cards have trouble with the US store but the japanese store won't accept a credit card unless it has a japanese address. You can get around this by buying prepaid japanese psn cards from ebay. If you are serious about doing this, send me a PM and I'll link you to a seller that sells them. He'll get the code to you in 24hrs and only makes a 10% mark up which is the most reasonable I've seen.

I've never had this problem. I have both ps3 & 360 & prefer ps3 online, it downloads stuff much faster than xbox & I rarely get cut off. The only problem I have with ps3 is that it doesn't play .mkv files. The menu system is easy to navigate so I have no idea why ppl are complaining about this. The control pads don't need batteries or battery-packs & its so quiet compared to my 360, which sounds like a jet engine when i turn it on. Also its free to play online & doesn't have to be sent back to factory to be fixed every 9 months.

One thing that annoys me about the ps3 is that it doesnt come with a controller that has vibration, and to buy one now costs 60 euro! mad expensive for a controller. For a next gen console, that was pretty ****.
But all round the playstation is great. Could of been a little cheaper though. :p

You can get them for half that if you shop around. I got a pair of DualShock 3s for €70 including delivery about a year ago.

Lack of .mkv support. Sort it out Sony.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

    Hates
    • Only 256MB RAM
    • No video playlists
    • Slow game loading times
    • Even LWP is very slow to load and that is not big at all
    • No PS2 BC
    • The way when the last video in a folder finishes, PS3 pauses at the end rather than quitting to XMB. I like to fold. This is my main folding stumbler as I watch movies on PS3 in bed, fall asleep and lose 7 to 8 hours or folding nearly every night.
    • No hardware GFX support on Linux.
    • SCEE PSN is badly designed and lacking software compared to the SCEA. I don't buy the excuse of localisation being a huge delay. That's all it is, an excuse.
    • I can't surf the internet while I have a game or LWP running. Probably the memory issue[see point 1] or maybe PS3 OS can't multitask that well.
I've never used XBox online but the PS3 friends interaction MUST get a huge overhaul
    • I really don't mind the big firmware downloads. I love getting new features from my PS3. However, I detest having to download it when all it does is brings in ONE security update or improves compatibility in ONE PS1 game. I'm sure there are a lot of cool things under the hood [new api's for developers etc] But that should be held off until there are a few new VISIBLE features for the user.
    • Big, or small, name games getting released. And on day 1, loads of DLC for micro payments. This is just pure profiteering and aimed at gullible younger players who just must have that new weapon or outfit.
    • I can't sign into PSN or buy anything if I don't have the latest firmware, even if the latest firmware only fixes ONE thing totally not relater to PSN.
    • Can't save WIFI profiles. Can do it on PSP, why not PS3?

I know my list is big [and there are more] but I really love my PS3 and would not be without it.

    And for balance
    Loves
    • Rechargeable controller
    • WIFI built in
    • BluRay [awesome]
    • Folding at home [I'm in the boards.ie team]
    • It's wide support for video and audio files [but by no means complete]
    • The XMB
    • Buzz Quiz TV, LBP, Savage Moon :)
    • Remote Play
    • Playstation Eye [especially with Buzz and Burnout P]
    • PSN [Don't like the layout but it's cool that I can d/l games without going to shop]
    • I can surf the internet without waiting for my PC to boot up.
    • That I can catagorise my games list rather than one big list [I have in the region or 30 PSN titles]
    • Ditto for videos.
    • I can put in a huge Hard disk without forking out loads of money to Sony and without voiding warranty
    • Free on line gaming. I will NEVER pay to play online other than once off purchase for the game.
    • Stream from Media server
    • Attach any USB storage device [once it's FAT32, no biggy]
    • Power save settings. Before this, I had to charge my controllers once a day. Now I get about three or four days out of one charge.
    • The new Photo Gallery download.
    • In game music from XMB. Even while surfing.

My biggest gripes are slow downloads and lack of MKV support.

I was going to install YDL on it, but since Linux can't make use of the gfx hardware, hardly much point.

Much more DLC on PS Store would be an added bonus!

There abit faulty...I know alot of peoples freeze alot of the time during online play and browsing the internet. Hate the L2 and R2 buttons so I got those clip ons. Cant play PS2 games..Theres no football manager game out for it:mad: It should display your country on your profile not just language..No vibration on joypad..Bit expensive

    • Lack of avatar choice.
    • How different the various PSN stores are. The Euopean one is rubbish compared to the American.
    • The Web browser. I swear they couldn't have made a more half arsed attempt at a web browser if they tried.
    • The menu system of course. It's a nice idea in theory, but it's just far far far too simple. No way to organise files properly, friends are just listed alphabetically, so on and so forth. A revamp would be nice.
    • The amount of time it takes to install some games and updates. Granted, it's probably unavoidable, but it's a pain.
    • The Sixaxis controller when it was the only controller. It was like holding nothing in your hand. Dualshock 3 is an improvement, but give me an Xbox 360 controller without that battery pack any day. Furthermore, the triggers at the back. Your fingers slip off very very easily. Another pro of the 360 controller.
    • Home. That was meant to be the best thing to happen to gaming ever.
    • Inability to play music while playing most games. The only game I can seem to do it with is Street Fighter.
    • Lack of backwards compatibility. I don't miss it alot, but it'd still be nice.
    • How the PLAYSTATION 3 logo looks far too like the Spiderman logo.

Saying that, I love the PS3 and I really am just looking for bad points. I had a loan of an Xbox for last week, and I honestly think it has nothing on the PS3.

Can't think of anything huge that pives me with PS3, not a big online gamer.

MKV support is coming for sure. PS3 is DivX certified device and newest DivX, version 7 supports MP4 container & MKV.
The leaked info from 2.70FW hints at a big reworking of friends list and cross-game chat and invites.

PS3 controllers not turning themselves off automatically. Lots of times someone has sat on the controller and hit the PS button. The controller then turns on and keeps searching for tthe PS3 until the batteries die. Then the next time you play you have to do it sitting on the floor with the tiny short usb cable it comes bundled with. Also the batteries on the controller don't charge unless the PS3 is turned on and don't charge even if it's in standby mode.

Ehh, go to Power Save Settings in PS3 Settings and enable power saving for controllers. They will turn off after 10 minutes of no activity.

Are you sure thats true? I plugged my controller into a USB plug socket thing (you know one of those MP3 chargers) and no lights are anything came on. Maybe it WAS charging but it gave me no indication that it was doing so.

I agree with alot of the gripes here, I want the stupid Web browser freezes sorted.

I have to say that my downloads are kind of fast and I have onlt had 2 firmware updates in the 3 months I have owned the machine. Are comments about constant updates from older users who had to put up with loads of updates in its earlier life?

I would love to know the feasiblity of a download that allows you to play PS2 games even if you are not BC.

If they don't get some classics like FF, MGS or Resi on PSN soon I will freak.
