Finance checks etc when buying a boat

    Hiya
My girlfriend's dad is about to buy a cabin cruiser (second hand). He mentioned last night having some worries that he might end up saddled with a load of someone else's finance on it (this happened when his friend bought a second hand car, which wasn't fully paid off before the original owner sold it to a garage, leading to loads of hassle).
I know there are checks you can make on a second hand car - is there any equivalent when you buy a second hand boat?
    Thanks

Get advice from a solicitor. Or look at the RYA website for bill of sale paperwork (but probably not legal in Ireland?)
