SO. Am pondering this whole internet dating thing...
Just getting fed up with the pub thing and havent met anyone ive liked in ages.. Im in my early thirties, consider my self pretty good looking, so im not desperate but im reluctant cos maybe the guys on there are? I know im generalising but just dont know to be honest! SO- Would be really interested in hearing from:

    1. Anyone who has tried it...

    2. If you havent, whats your perception of the whole thing? Do you think people who try it are sad or desperate?

    3. Any guys on here, what do YOU think of someone who does it?

Ive heard its quite commen these days and not as "dodgy" as it may have been in the past but im still a bit reluctant....

i havnt used a dating site but i went out with someone i met on the internet for a year and a half just be very careful and be very clear about what your looking for before meeting anyone. exchange pics before meeting and then you should be fine

it is way way more common than people think

I met my OH on boards. Not dodgy at all i think the same rules apply as meeting someone in RL!

    Go for it.

I don't do it myself but as you can already see, people have had good experiences as a result of internet dating. Some people aren't confident when approaching people in a club etc. so internet dating opens up a new avenue for them. That's not to say you personally aren't confident or anything like that. :)

I wouldn't worry about how other people percieve it anyway. As the old saying goes, those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind.

Best of luck if you decide to do it.

I've tried dating via the personal ads, which is equivalent I suppose. I met a few women, maybe a half dozen, and they were as normal and as sound as women you'd meet anywhere else: no nutjobs and not desperate.

Keep the first meeting very public, coffee rather than drinks, and keep it fairly short. I would say pass on a minimal amount of personal info until you gauge the other person.

    Good luck!

Dont use Parship.ie. its pretty crap and expensive.

I've made many friends on boards. Occasionally it doesn't work out, but the same could be said for any other place you meet.

I say go for it , just make sure you talk to the person for a bit and suss them out before you meet them. And again keep it in a public place, go for lunch or something 1st and not drinks on the 1st meeting..

boards is a pretty nice way for meeting people also :P !

It's a lot of fun :D I think there are more guys on it than girls though, so be prepared for an influx of emails (especially if you put a photo up)!

seems to be loads of sound "normal" folk on here so i guess the internet weirdo stereotype doesnt always ring true!

    best of luck with it!

My friend met her husband on an internet dating site. She was in a long term relationship that ended badly so her friend set her up on one. She got in contact with her now husband and they talked online for about 3/4 yrs before meeting. became friends first and then the rest is history. All I know is they are very happily married.

    Good luck :)

I know a couple who are very happily married with two kids who originally met via internet dating, so it does work for some alright :)

I agree with the others, just use your common sense about it and it should be fine. My friend recently started going out with a guy she met online and it seems to be going well for her anyway! She met him through a social networking website, not a dating website.

Just be careful about meeting the person in a public place, make sure you've told people where you're going etc all the usual advice.
Good luck, hope it goes well for you :)

Ive met way more nice, interesting, sexy women through dating websites than I ever seem to meet in real life (in Ireland).

The Irish Bar and club scene is not like the scene in more advanced countries: Everybody gets hammered to death, ignores each other, is outright rude to each other, takes the piss out of each other, and then somehow we're all supposed to end up in bed together, accidentally. And then if the sight of the anonymous blob in the bed the next morning doesnt make you physically sick, the two of you make plans to meet again (for a few drinks).

Trying to forge the fragile beginnings of a new relationship in that mess is like trying to start a car dealership in Baghdad.

At least in the t'internet, you know everybody's single, finds you somewhat attractive and vice versa, and so you go for a coffee and see what happens. In fact you're probably less likely to meet a wierdo there than in a club in Dublin.

A lot of people have recommended smooch.com
    Must give it a go.

edit: hmmm, filling in the form now. I'll report back with findings.
    - all in the name of science of course :o

My OH isn't a huge fan of the idea of internet dating, but I tried it a few times before I met him, and didn't have any bad experiences.

To be honest, I think it's fantastic! It might not be how you thought you'd meet someone special, but so what? You can find almost anything you ever wanted on the internet . . . why not a date?

I dated a woman once. She couldn't decide whether her name was Antoinette or Annette as her birth cert was smudged.

So she called herself Internet. Looks like a fair few dated her here.

Connecting people is a great site, my friends are both dating guys they met on it, it's free and has an IM service which is great seemingly! Best of luck!

Bah it seems online women are even crueler than IRL women. Bases on the smooch.com rating system apparently Im 1.25 out of 10 in the looks department. Awfully naive of me to expect a six...
