Who is the best frontman in rock?
I just watched Richard Ashcroft sing Bittersweet Symphony and Love is Noise at Glastonbury on Youtube and in my book he is TGFITHOR or The Greatest Frontman In The History Of Rock. Are you with me?

    Nope

Richard Ashcroft? not even close. Go to Youtube and type in Queen at LiveAid, and you'll see Rock's greatest ever frontman at his peak.

+1 Freddie Legend, best frontman by a mile most people in rock today agree...

The same Richard Ashcroft who put Live 8 attendees to sleep during his version of Bittersweet Symphony with Coldplay?

Uh yeah, i think you need to watch more concert footage of bands that came out before 1991.

Now that i've got the sarcasm out of my system for the day.

Yeah, Freddie Mercury has to get the #1 spot here for all time. And there are several other worthy contenders for second place too.

    Robert Plant
    Jim Morrison
    David Lee Roth

... to name a few more.

Jesus H...what the rest of the folk are saying +1. The tunes might not be to the taste of everybody, but if you want dynamic frontmen, you'll be searching a long time before you find somebody who gets within an asses roar of Mrs Mercury's young lad...

This is gonna be a landslide of Freddie, just kill the thread already before it turns into a trainwreck :D

Also bear in mind, his physical health was beginning to decline at around this stage too, their live Magic tour the year after this would be their final as a result of it. And he still blew his contenders for best frontmen out of the water. :D

Sorry, but i assumed the title "who IS the best frontman in rock" meant the discussion was talking about current bands/frontmen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭Rigsby

There is another guy ( called "Jauguer" or "Jagger" or something :p ) that springs to mind. While he is now well past his sell by date, he was up there with the best of them in his hey day.

Assumption is the mother of all f*ckups, it says "Best frontman", to me that says, is or was. :)

He also mentioned "the history of rock", now if i recall correctly, history means times past, no?

Although i've heard the only thing that can go into 13 more than once has something to do with a rolling stone ;)

Freddie is a definite, seen 'em at Slane in 1986, was only 12 but still remember some of it. Amazing.

Also, James Hetfield knows how to rock and interact with the crowd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,064 ✭✭✭poundhound

After Freddie.....Id say Angus Young. He's not the lead singer but definitley AC/DC's frontman.

Yes. And that only increased his iconic frontman image. :)

    Ever...probably Freddie Mercury.

Best living frontman has to be Springsteen.

    liam gallagher

Sorry but no, we're talking about a guy who stands in front of a mic with his hands behind his back for 2/3rds of an entire set. Disqualified! NEXT!

Springsteen would be up there alright, another one left out which I also think needs to be mentioned would be Steven Tyler.

Not a big Queen fan at all, but Freddie Mercury was one hell of a frontman.

Not sure who the best living one is but, whether you love him or hate him, Bono would certainly be up there. He's a great charismatic live performer.

    Wrong ! :o

    Historically, I'd suggest Freddie Mercury.

Best I've seen is Matt Bellamy. Muse may not be the world's best band, but damn they put on a show.

And he has one of the best guitar poses ever. :pac:

Yeah, Wyman married Mandy Smith when she was 18, but he'd apparently started going out with her since she was 13, while Wyman would have been 47 when they started going out.

Many a joke did the rounds about that.
Anyway, sorry for taking this off topic. :)

Mercury, Axl Rose(before he lost the plot and fired the band), Hetfield in that order.

Get listening to more music before you come out with irrational ill-thought statements like that. God I knew this thread would anger me!

Springsteen. In his prime his performances outshone even Freddie in his prime.

Nah, He never really interacts with the crowd that much, one of the best performers maybe but thats kinda different then being a frontman.

My one goes to Dave Grohl as I'm sure anyone who has seen Foo Fighters live can testify.

    Bowie.

But I guess it wasn't really a band with him. He's just got great stage presence. He really stands out on stage.

Mike Patton??? That legendary concert in Lisbon with GnR & Soundgarden (which they asumed was Saville for some odd reason.

Ah I've seen 'em both but preferred Bellamy. But different strokes and all that. ^^

Can't really argue with Freddie Mercury tbh...

I'd give a mention to Eddie Vedder though, he's fairly nuts on stage (and writes good songs!)

    James Hetfield
    Axl Rose
    Eddie Vedder
    Mick Jagger
    David Bowie
    Freddie Mercury
    Steven Tyler
    Phil Lynott
    Rory Gallagher
Noel Gallagher(!!!!!) I'll tell me ma if anyone hits me over this one:D:D
Meatloaf for the pure unadulterated showmanship back in his heyday..

Just coz he did that car insurance add, no need to hold that against him.

*whack* and tell yer ma to buy you a brain as Noel isn't the frontman.

He still has it. I saw him about five years ago and can still put on a show, and that was when he was out of hospital a couple of weeks earlier due to heart complications.

I threw in enough suggestions, but I will back you up. Saw him supporting Madonna at Slane (was roped into that one folks, don't hang me) with The Stooges, and eventhough their set was cut short, the guy can still f*cking go for his age. :)

Best Front man would be Bruce Springsteen or Meat Loaf for the present. Wow.

Best there was - Freddie Mercury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,379 ✭✭✭thebigcheese22

Meat Loaf - HA!!! You're funny guys ;)

Mine would have to Dave Grohl coz i saw Foo Fighters live and hes just amazing!

But I'd say he'd even be topped by the legend that is Eddie Vedder, have yet to see Pearl Jam live but I'm positive I'l be blown away when I do! :D

Also a shout out to Paul Noonan of Bell X1, tremendous stage presence.

Haven't been to many gigs then, have you?
Remember, you judge a frontman by the crowd reaction, not of what you think of the music. I've seen both Meatloaf, and Foo Fighters live, but them both on the same personal level, good listening but not essential listening. But Grohl doesn't even hold a candle to Meatloaf, probably down to experience.

Unfair comparison as well, as Meatloaf's live shows are almost Rock Opera really, as opposed to a guy with a guitar belting out songs for 2 hours.
But I'd say he'd even be topped by the legend that is Eddie Vedder, have yet to see Pearl Jam live but I'm positive I'l be blown away when I do! :D

And the fact that you're a total Pearl Jam fanboy doesn't alter your judgment in this debate whatsoever ;)
Also a shout out to Paul Noonan of Bell X1, tremendous stage presence.

You've got to be kidding me! Great voice, but i've seen BellX1 live footage, he's about as much stage charisma as a brick.

Also regarding Bowie, his live Tin Machine stuff was actually pretty awesome, especially in support for the second album, so he can be counted in this category.
