Pulled muscle :(

    Hey everyone

    I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to all things fitness-related, I only started exercising properly about 6 weeks ago to train for the Four Peaks (which I signed up for in a moment of insanity! :p). I go to Curves 3 times a week, use a home exercise bike/cross trainer, and do some regular walking as well.

    I'm normally very good about stretching after exercises, I know how important it is, however I got Wii Fit as a Valentine's pressie last week and only set it up yesterday. I messed around with it for a little while trying all the different games and stuff, and then stupidly went on about my business without stretching out - I guess I thought I hadn't done that much work to warm up my muscles that much.

    Later in the evening then I noticed a pain in the back of my left leg, behind and slightly above the knee (hamstring??), and this morning it's worse. I'm not really limping or anything but it is painful. Specifically, when I'm walking it hurts me as I'm extending my leg to put my foot down. I walked into work this morning to warm up the muscle and tried to stretch it out when I got here, but that's made no difference.

    I don't think it's anything serious, but I was just wondering what's the best way to fix the problem now? I was planning to go for a walk and head up to Curves for a workout after work, but I don't know if it's beneficial to exercise through it or if that would do more damage and I should just be resting it??

    Long-winded post for what I'm sure is a simple question, sorry! :o Any feedback would be appreciated though - thanks!

    Well done on your new found fitness. Can't give advice on injury but something similar happened to me a few weeks ago. I also thought it was a pulled muscle but when it was still sore in a few days so I went to a physio and it turned out to be a sprained tendon. Was so much better after two sessions and would probably have took ages to heal by itself.

    Yours will probably be completely differnet injury but if it doesn't improve in a day or two it could be more that a pulled muscle so I would definitely recommend a trip to physio.

    Thanks for the reply lubie, yeah I did some good old reliable Google searching on pulled muscles, and the general consensus seems to be to rest it for a couple of days anyway, so looks like I'll be giving Curves a miss for today! Fingers crossed it'll sort itself out with some TLC and isn't something worse than a pulled muscle, cos I can't really afford a physio trip til payday!

    It could be your lower back with the sciatica nerve causing the problem to appear in the hamstring - pretty common.

    As is said above rest it for a few days and apply ice. If it's not ok get to a physio.
